We received complaints from people unhappy with references to ā€œprotestsā€, in our coverage of the unrest which has taken place across the country.


Our response

Our coverage of the violent disorder taking place in towns and cities across the country has made clear the violence and nature of unrest in different areas, detailing the facts with regards to specific incidents, and the impact on local communities affected.Ā  We have reported on actions taken by those participating in the riots, the response of police forces around the UK in handling this volatile situation, and the number of arrests made.Ā  We have included statements made by the prime minister, home secretary and others across the political spectrum

As we have reported, there have been various individuals, groups, and ideologies involved in inciting this disorder.Ā  We have examined the complex range of factors which have contributed to the unrest, reflecting the claims made by some of those taking part as to their motivations, and also hearing the views of counter-demonstrators and groups who feel targeted by the riots.

We have given careful consideration to all aspects of our coverage, including the language we have used, to ensure that we have accurately reflected to our audience the context of this situation as it has developed.
