Cornwall's surfers enjoyed huge success at the popular Gul Night Surf event in mid June 2009. They tackled some of the best UK waves this year at Newquay's Fistral Beach.

Alan Stokes has spent many years surfing the Cornish waves, and it proved worthwhile as he won the Night Surf in spectacular style. Stokes now has the most wins for an individual event on the UK Pro Surf Tour.

There was further local success for Newquay's Tom Butler. He was the runner up in the popular event. He was unlucky to lose out in the final itself, despite scoring the best wave of the heat.

Bude's Reubyn Ash came third, with the fourth place going to Newquay's Oli Adams.

In the Longboard category Cornwall's Ben Skinner took the first place for the second time in the row.

There was plenty of action in the Women's events. The biggest successes went to visiting surfers. Jo Denison from Pembrokeshire dominated the female heats, taking the Queen of the Wave award for the highest Women's scoring wave of 9.5.

The runner up was Swansea's Gwen Spurlock. Laura Crane took third place, with Hannah Harding from Totnes coming fourth.

The Paddle board title was won by Elliot Dudley.

Thousands of people turned up to Fistral Beach to support the local surfers, while enjoying stunning waves.
