Porter has the key to success

A pulsating match was clinched for Bedworth United by a fantastic goal from Ben Porter as the Greenbacks secured their passage into the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Bedworth United 1 South Normanton Athletic 0

Tuesday, 4 September 2007

United should have taken the lead in the first half of this FA Cup premlinary round replay as a number of chances were squandered by the home side. With five minutes gone Bedworth had a header cleared off the line, while South Normanton goalkeeper Ross Whalin was called into action to pull off saves from two good efforts by striker Adam Kinder.

Possibly the most notable incident of the first half came when impressive midfielder Luke Baker was on the receiving end of a crunching tackle from Martin Bowles resulting in a scuffle between the two players and a booking for each as the game鈥檚 fiery tempo threatened to boil over.

After half-time, however, it was the away team who had the best part of the play as South Normanton flew out of the traps and caught United cold with a few close efforts; Simon Johnson was especially guilty of not making the most of two opportunities when he had a clear run on goal.

It may have been against the run of play, but it was the Greenbacks who took the lead on the 65th minute. Porter latched on to a through ball, muscling past full-back Adam Newton and lobbing the advancing Whalin with a beautifully controlled half-volley that sailed past the hapless goalkeeper and into the net.

South Normanton seemed deflated after conceding and were unable to get a hold of the game. Their frustration spilled over as a flurry of bad challenges were committed by the visitors and a late sending off for midfielder Paul Gamble completed a bitter night for the away side. Bedworth, on the other hand, were relieved to get through and progress into the first qualifying round with a tie against Eastwood Town to look forward to.
