Uniting Britain ahead of London 2012

Standing barefoot on a soaking wet ground in the middle of the cathedral ruins, Marlon Devonish appears to be at one with his surroundings.

Whether or not a typically precipitous British summer will give any of our Olympians an advantage in 2012 is unknown, but our competitors being spurred on by adoring passionate British support is surely to give them an extra boost.

鈥淭he Beijing Olympics in 2008 is going to be absolutely amazing. You can only imagine what it鈥檒l be like in 2012, with a home crowd and all the spectators willing us on in our respective events,鈥 quotes Devonish in his Britain United profile video.

Over the past four days, a series of information boards have stood in Coventry鈥檚 University square displaying photographs of a selection of British Olympians in an environment which inspires them, alongside a video profile and facts about their backgrounds.听

For our competitors to maximise their potential in London 2012, 鈥極lympic fever鈥 needs to grip the nation over the next four years, which is what the Britain United national photographic exhibition aims to encourage.

And with Great Britain on course to produce their greatest medal haul since 1920, it鈥檚 full steam ahead in the drive for success in London.

Coventry-born sprinter Devonish is still on course to achieve his goals in Beijing. He set himself a target of an appearance in the final of the 200m, but with the frighteningly fast Usian Bolt to compete against, he has little chance of a victory.

A strong field in the 200m means Devonish is very much an outsider for a podium finish, but as a defending 4x100m relay champion following his gold in Athens four years ago, he again hopes to bring home a medal.

Leamington-born rower Steve Williams successfully defended Great Britain鈥檚 coxless fours Olympic title at the Beijing games to add yet another gold medal to Great Britain鈥檚 growing total.

Considering only three games ago in Atlanta in 1996, the previous generation of British Olympians only managed to bring home one gold medal, our current Team GB could be riding the crest of a wave.

London 2012 couldn鈥檛 have arrived at a better time. With the momentum Team GB will be taking into the games, what better time for the British public to be able to witness, in person, our most successful Olympic games we have ever had.
