Are any of the scenes in TA improvised? I felt in some of the recent encounters with Emma that spontaneity of dialogue was being aimed at, which made me wonder if the actors were working off-script.

This is interesting. Some of the actors must be very knowledgable about their characters and how they would respond and what they'd say in a given situation, particularly if they've been playing them for decades.
I'd like to think that the scenes in the cowsheds are improvised.
Can just imagine it:
"Yes, Ermintrude dear, your motivation is that you are a cow with a huge calf inside - imagine the pain, darling, imagine the pain."

No, it's all very tightly scripted. But when you have a combination of good naturalistic dialogue, talented actors who can deliver the lines as if they had just come fresh to their minds, and a director who can set the right atmosphere in which these things can happen, then it can sound remarkably spontaneous. Our younger actors in particular are very good at this.
Oh Mr K, modest to the end. You forgot to mention the fabulous scriptwriting in the first place!!
