Hello all. Can some one please enlighten me about the Archer Chronicles Radio Play .

I have just listened to this and it starts around 1916 with Frank staying at home with Ben and Daniel going war.
After the war and the death of their father they fall out and Ben goes of the Canada and Frank to New Zealand.

Can some one please tell me when was this broadcast? as everything I find about the Archers starts around 1950-s.

    Thanks for any help.

Not sure when - late 1990s/early 2000s? I was given a recording of it in 2001

You may be interested to know that several actors took part as their ancestors - e.g. Trevor (Eddie) Harrison played Joe Grundy's father or grandfather

Joanne, Ben, Frank and Daniel Archer were brothers. Dan was the one who stayed in Ambridge and took over Brookfield. He married Doris Forrest (what were her parents thinking of when they gave her that name?), who was a maid in the service of Lady Letty Lawson-Hope, the local Squire's wife.

Doris's brother Tom became the gamekeeper on the Lawson-Hope estate and managed to continue as gamekeeper through several subsequent changes of ownership - the Lawson-Hopes sold up in the 50s or early 60s, I think (before my time, but I've heard/read about it).

Dan and Doris had three children: the eldest was Jack, who left the farm and served in the forces during WW2. He met Peggy, a Londoner who was in the ATS, and they had three children, Jennifer, Lilian and Tony. Jack and Peggy settled in Ambridge after the war and took over The Bull, which is where the children grew up. All three children are still in Ambridge, as is Peggy, but Jack died about 30 years ago - he was an alcoholic and clinically depressed too. Many years later Peggy helpfully married another Jack, Jack Woolley.

Dan and Doris's other children were Phil and Christine, also both still in Ambridge. Phil of course eventually took over Brookfield, Christine used to run the riding stables. Lots more information on both elsewhere on this site.

As for Frank and Ben, I believe the cynical answer is that in the 50s and 60s the Ö÷²¥´óÐã was keen to sell TA to Commonwealth countries, so family connections with Canada and NZ were manufactured. Frank's widow Laura rather implausibly came to Ambridge, bought Ambridge Hall (where the Snells live now) and became a central character. I don't know if Ben or any of his descendants ever featured.

As a fully paid up Archers Anorak, I'm astonished I never heard the Ambridge Chronicles if they were broadcast on R4. I know Joanna Toye, one of the SWs, has written several novels about the Archer family, so I assume this is one of hers - available on tape? I have some Vintage Archers tapes which are great fun, so must look out for this.

Joanna Toye's Archers Chronicles are available on tape, read by Miriam Margolyes, Stella Gonet and Stephanie Cole. However, the broadcast mentioned here is a dramatisation, possibly based on one of her books, which includes what we've heard before about Ambridge history of the period (Doris torn between two Archer brothers, Grundy returns from the front to find Dan has been given the Brookfield tenancy he felt he'd been promised etc...)

Jo Toye's Chronicles only cover the on-air story since 1951. They aren't connected with the radio of a similar name (confusing, I know), which was a one-off programme for Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio 4.

You mean it's yet another recycled story line? Bet this one has a more dramatic ending.

And in those days the Archers and Grundies were on a par - ie both in line for the Brookfield tenancy? No wonder Joe has always had a chip on his shoulder.

I'll suggest it to Mary Kalemkarian, who runs the network.

I have an cassette of this play which I believe was aired in 1988. Here are a few details which people might find interesting. It would be a good idea if it could be re-aired. This is what appeared in the Radio Times:

"The Ambridge Chronicles" - 1914-22 dramatised by Peter Mackie from the novel "To The Victor The Spoils" by Jock Gallager with Michael Maloney as Dan Archer and Holly Aird as Doris.

The Ambridge summer fete: where young Dan Archer sees Doris Forrest, where the band is chivvied along by a teenage Walter Gabriel, while, a world away in Sarajevo, a shot has sounded that will change everyone's lives.

The cast included Trevor Harrison (playing George Grundy), Terry Molloy and Sunny Ormande.

A big thank you to Willowbee.1. for fully answering my question.
To those who requested a copy of this play which is nearly twenty years old, I am sorry but the Ö÷²¥´óÐã have objected to me offering to share it with you.
All I can say is that I hope that you can give them [Ö÷²¥´óÐã] a good kick up the pants and get them to re-broadcast it. It is when you think about it the most important "Archers" episode ever as it starts the whole series with Daniel and Doris meeting at the fete. From little acorns I believe is the saying.

Thank you to everyone who repied to my question
