I thought I might start a diary to keep note of when the regular threads in ML first appear, so that we can look in future years and see if global warming really is happening.
2008:
5th October - Poppy thread.
Have we had the sprout thread yet?

Almost certainly yes, but we need accurate reporting if this is to be scientific. So I'd be grateful if someone posts the first sighting of the Christmas 2009 sprout thread when it occurs.
A fiver says it is Boxing Day 2008.
I started boiling my sprouts in May 1997 to be cooked in time for this Christmas '08. However, I fear they may be 'al-dente'.

Erms - I think you may have missed the annual 'When is Bonfire Night?' thread and 'I hate Halloween' thread.
I shan't be around to endure either event this year, hopefully. (Tell me they don't do Halloween in Oz, please!)

There's been the odd mention of Hallowe'en Lili but not the Thread Proper (you know, comercialisation, Americanisation, ghastliness of trick or treating, how much better it was in our day, it's only the same as guising etc). This is why we need accurate records, to aid future research.
BTW - don't hold out much hope for absence of said event in Oz.

Don't we usually have a non-sprout-related C-word thread too? (Commercialisation, Americanisation, cf. Hallowe'en.)

We have had a version of this, $quigs, started by Aminam, but perhaps it wasn't the Christmas thread proper.
We have also had, if not quite the HB2009 thread, some discussion as to the date.
The Tate2009 thread is here:

Thanks, Drystane.
While I'm at it, surely we must have a 'First Cuckoo in Spring' to look forward to in the New Year?

Oh good, just what I needed.
May I. since we've only just started, be permitted a portmanteau post:
October 5 2009. Last Thursday I saw what is probably the last swallow of the year unless I see another one in which case it wasn't the last one just a bit late AND Last Thursday week I saw the first barm bracks in Tesco, it was still September for flip's sake, have these people no sense of decorum or dignity what are things coming to?
Thank you, I feel so much better for venting that
Wish I had the diary eralier. I forgot to put the sprouts on until a week last Tuesday. Does this mean they won't be ready until Easter. Woe, woe, and thrice woe.
Smug preen alert!!
Moi has just ordered her Christmas Cards, moi has.
Dunno if that rates as being really important for your diary, erms, Ma'am. But, like Dean V
I just needed to , well, smugly preen while getting things off busty substances.
jx
I've killed threds ded in my time, but never so dramatically!
Is Mustardland collectively freaked out at the thought of my ordering (sssshhhhh)Christmas cards?
jx
I've always liked the appearance of the evil or not Lindt bunny thread round about Easter.

And noting how soon Stollen and Pannetone and Marzipan and Chocolate Santas cont'd p94 are in Lidl, Aldi or supermarket of choice.
Has there been a 'when do the clocks go back' thread?

Stollen were available in Lidl on Saturday. I resisted.
As i shall be away for christmas I am going to annoy/amaze all my friends by sending out my cards on Oct 20th. (It's to stop them wasting money sending me any when I wont be here)

Large boxes of trick-or-treat 'candy' in Aldi yesterday, but then it's October so l think that's allowed.
Thought l saw a snowdrop in the garden but it was just an errant sweet wrapper. Panic over.

There's a fine old one, rehashed once more, at present in The Bull about not giving away too much personal infomation.

me three on the first point (and huggs to Squiggs for being a wonderful human being)
but - my 'last swallow' has been superceded by a last-er swallow seen yesterday st the Supervalu roundabout. Glad to see it outside a decent Irish-owned franchise store, the earlier (though still late) one was outside Tesco.
I have bought my first Lidl Christmas pudding and two bags of mini-stollen and am shocked that most of the latter have already been eaten by English visitors.
Although the barm-bracks have been seen prematurely, the other true halloween specialities, curly kale and 'wine apples' (aka pomegranites) haven't appeared yet.

STG, the current fireworks thread seems to be limited to the effects on dogs & other animals, but if it strays into other territory I'll make a note.
Leaps - the previous poppy thread was the annual red or white or none at all debate, but the one you mention is a 'first sighting' thread so i'll add that.

Thank you all for the updates!
I'm not sure about the carols - I don't think it's a seasonal regular, but I'll put it down.
On the other hand the charity present thread is definitely the annual one, despite the word 'birthday' in the title! Always comes up some time before Christmas.
31st August - Tate 2009 thread
20th September - requesting no Christmas threads
5th October - Poppy debate thread
5th October - Sprouts 2009 thread
9th October - Christmas catalogues/presents
16th October - ML pantomime auditions
17th October - anti-fireworks thread
17th October - first sighting of poppy thread
17st October - Christmas carols
21st October - charity presents
This is an excellent thread ROTFL The list of approx-annual thread sightings could usefully be calibrated by the number of Isn't Ruth Awful or Aren't the Archers Scripts Awful These Days, Not Like When I Started Listening Before Any Of You Lot Were Born threads that have occurred since its previous sighting.
