Any advice or knowledge sharing gratefully received. The odd bit of sympathy wouldn't go amiss either.
As some of you may recall, I suffered a compound fracture of my right ankle just over a year ago.
The surgical wound didn't heal well and I ended up back in hospital with an infection in June.
That was cleared up but the wound still did not heal so I was back in hospital in August having the metal work removed where they found further infection.
8 months on and the wound has still not healed. I attended the fracture clinic this morning and was told there was probably some dead or unhealthy bone acting as home to some residual infection and the next step is an MRI scan (and possibly a CT scan) to determine how serious the infection is.
The MRI scan has been requested as urgent but I'm told there is a 4 to 6 week wait. I must admit to being a bit freaked by all this and I wonder if I should be doing something to get the MRI scan done more quickly.
I await your comments.

Can't do the knowledge, XNo, but will do the sympathy. You must be shouting When will it end? So sorry to read this.
I was feeling sorry for myself this morning as my leg is still bruised and sore after falling between the train and platform in Cologne on November 30th last year but reading your tale of woe, tells me that I have nothing to complain about! See, you have mad eme feel better not your intention but still an achievment, thanks!
Take care

Oh Xno .... not much to say except sincere sympathy. I get peed off when my scars still hurt, and the nerve damage in my hand still gives me annoyance, but at least I have scar, not a wound still. Buckets of sympathy -- from such an uneventful break, too. Life stinks ... You are amazing -- really truly, for staying sane, let alone cheerful.
Are MRIs expensive if you paid for it yourself? "Urgent" translating as 4-6 weeks is rubbish.
I'm really really sorry you're still suffering. It's completely carp.

Blimmin' heck, XNo, you must be sick to the back teeth with this. I don't know anything about bones - just came to offer some sympathy, and to hope that you get some speedy attention from the medics.

Hi Nomad, I don't have any expertise and can only suggest calling or making an appointment with the most approachable GP at your practice for a chat about it. Perhaps they could give you some advice. I don't know whether you could afford to go private just for the MRI, which might possibly speed things up a bit. If so might be worth asking the GP if they would do so if it were them or a member of their family. JE

Again, no knowledge (my bones have been shockingly damaged, therefore MRI scans, but heal boringly) but much sympathy. You are very stoical.

Thanks for the sympathy, etc. Yes, I am pretty fed up with it. In a strange way I am also glad that there is still something wrong that is treatable because at least there is the prospect of improvement.
I believe an MRI scan privately is around £600 which I can't afford. I have, however, got some private health insurance that would cover me this year but I'd have to change consultants and hospitals. Also, once I use the private health insurance I will lose the no-claims bonus and not be able to afford to keep it going the next year so I'm wondering whether to keep it up my sleeve in case of something really serious.
The insurance only covers certain hospitals but what I didn't realise when I had the accident was that if you are admitted through A&E then the insurance applies. Mind you, at the time I thought is was just a broken bone that would be fixed fairly quickly.

My mother is the PA to a hospital consultant, and has often said that in situations like this she would always advise the patient to call the consultant's PA and see if there are any cancellations / if anything can be done to shorten the wait. More often than not an earlier appointment can be provided.
The one bit of consolation I can offer though, is that if it really were urgent, ie if life or limb were at risk, they'd have MRI'd you toot sweet.
Best of luck; I hope whatever the news ultimately is it is what you'd wish for.
Haven't a clue about what's best, but am sending sympathetic vibes your way.
<quote>Oh, and BTW, I'm not talking to Redbookish. I'm up to level 7 and 49,000 on Gold Strike.

I introduced Red to Gold Strike in revenge for Bubbels. It is still her fault, though. I was introduced to GS by another friend in revenge for Bubbels, and they knew about Bubbels, because I'd shown it to them, and I was introduced by Red.
I made level 9 once. Only once.
I hope the MRI scan happens sooner and that it shows up something useful they can work with to sort it all out once and for all.

Just sending my sympathy and a hug, XNo! No advice to offer, but I think calling the consultant's PA on a regular basis is a good idea, make friends with her, as it were.

XNo - much sympathy that it's still going on. I haven't any experience of your particular problem, but a couple of years ago OH was on the waiting list for an MRI scan of his spine, and was told that he would have to wait 13 months (yes - THIRTEEN) on NHS. We were also told about £600 for a private scan, but after talking to Occupational Health nurse at his work, she found a clinic in Cheltenham which would do it for much much less. It was agony for him to travel in the car with me to Cheltenham, but we made it.
I cannot remember the name of the organisation which runs this clinic, but perhaps a bit of judicious googling might find something in your area. I seem to remember that they were run by a charity, but that's all.

Nomad,
I am very sorry to hear that you are still suffering in the way you are. I had something wrong with my knee a couple of years ago which made it very painful for me to walk and that was a really difficult time for me.
You mentioned that you believe the cost of having an MRI done privately will be about £600. I just wondered if it is worth following this up in more detail and getting a firm cost. I had to wait for an MRI on my knee and considered having it done privately but my appointment came through while I was still debating whether to part with the money! My chiropractor had told me she could make the referral and the cost would be about £200 and that was about 18 months ago.

Too right - over the past 11 years I have had loads of referrals, operations and procedures by various consultants, mosy NHS, some private, and have usually been on first-name terms with the consultants secretary.
If you are lucky enough to be able to respond at short notice to a gap caused by a cancellation, tell the secretary, as it is in everyone's interests, and all the ones I've been in contact with have wanted to be helpful.
Oh dear Xno, you must be so fed up of it all by now.
I have no idea about scans or bones, but just want to send you buckets of warm thoughts and sympathy
Hope it is not too long to wait for the scan.
much love

I broke my ankle (classic Potts type 111 with ruptured ligaments) 25 years ago in June. You have my deepest sympathies as - once one gets past youth - it is one of the most difficult fractures to repair. I still have all the hardware (plate, pins and wire) in place and some restricted movement. Good luck with your recovery.
I would re-iterate other posters' comments about keeping in touch with the consultant's secretary or whoever books appointments. If you can get there quickly, it might even pay to ring every morning to find out if anyone has cancelled for that day.
XNO.
How bliddy annoying. Will it never end?

I guess this could apply to bubbels as well as my ankle.
Some good suggestions, I'll see if I can get an appointment with my GP just to get a different perspective on it, I'll also ring the consultant's PA and explain that I am quite worried and available for a cancellation at 45 minutes notice.
I think I will also ring the health insurance and see what their take on it is. That's all bases covered as far as I can see. It's really helpful to me to get your ideas.
I told a neighbour this morning that, as a service to the community, we were having all the bad luck for the street so they could rest easy.

Poor ol' XNo!
I googled the clinic mentioned in my post above, and it seems they are still doing MRIs for just over £200. Couldn't find anywhere on your side of the country, though. I expect Cheltenham is way too far for you. Pity. They were really good. Especially as the Consultant who did the report turned out to be someone that we knew! He phoned us the same evening to give the results.

XNo, I will eat my hat if you haven't got a positive nature :0)) From choice I would choose my Tilley sun hat, as apparently one got eaten by an elephant and it came out the other end intact and just needed a tumble in the washing machine to restore it to its original condition.
All the same, I hope I don't have to eat it, as I'm full of porridge at the moment.
I hope you got back to sleep alright.

I did get back to sleep thank you.
I rang the insurance people and it turns out I am fully covered for the same consultant and hospital via some loophole or other even though their list of hospitals does not include the one I have been treated at.
I've no complaints atall about how I've been treated under the NHS but I am very glad to be taking some of the waiting and uncertainty out of this.

I didn't have to go right inside it, they pushed the bed in as far as my hips, I could make a joke about getting stuck if they tried any further but I will refrain.
I ended up stiff and creaky after being laid flat on my back for half an hour without moving but that was the worst of it. They give you a little alarm button for if you get panicky and play music through headphones (although the machine is too noisy to really hear the music).
I'll report back when I know more.
