Happy to say that there were two loudly singing nightingales at Abberton Reservoir this morning.

However, one of them has got me puzzled.

I have heard many nightingales over the years, and some are better singers than others, but one today made a very curious call that I had never heard before.

It sounded like a corn crake. It "craked" several times, and when it flew off to another bush, further away, it "craked" from there too.

In between times, it sang very loudly and melodically - but I would be very interested to know if Syd or another birdperson has heard anything like it.

Have to say that I don't have anywhere near the knowledge of a proper 'bird person' but the song you've heard from your nightingale sounds very like the one I have singing away now actually, about 30 metres from me! I thought it was quite amusing as it sounded as though it had got something stuck and was trying to clear it's throat. Last year we had what sounded like quite a few at about this time, but this year so far I have only heard one.

    Coo. I don't think I've ever heard a nightingale.

I could be wrong, and just never realised it was. I shall now go to the RSPB site to hear what it sounds like.

It's possible I've heard, one, but if so, certainly wasn't aware of it. As for seeing one, well it's a little brown job, and I'm never good at recognising them. So I doubt I have. (My sister used to go out with a professional ornithologist, and he was always seeing rare things out on walks, where we were seeing a sparrow or thrush or something, and misidentifying it. So I've less faith in my bird ID skills than I once had.)

This extract has a crakey bit at the end.

That's a nice site, Bearhug - I know what you mean about not realising you'd heard them - my sister came to stay last year and said 'Wow, you've got nightingales, how lovely' and I said 'Have I?'

My sister told me they nest near the ground and as I say, last year there seemed to be a lot of them. But unfortunately my new little cat must have been listening to what my sister said about nesting near the ground as I opened the porch door one morning last spring and found one on the mat. At times like that, I really dislike cats. I think nightingales return every year to the same locality - in which case, they must have come here for years in safety - then we move in....
