Today I visited curlew's breeding grounds near Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales. About 12 years ago (the last time I was there at this time of year) it was teeming with them, today there were hardly any. I'm devastated!! What's happening? Have they gone forever?

They are on the Amber alert list because their habitat is being eroded by modern agricultural methods. I saw one displaying over the motorway today.
Not really what I wanted to hear but I can well believe it now. No curlews in Spring? What a tragedy that will be.
