Today is the first day of Bone Cancer Awareness Week. People affected by this disease - sufferers, their families, and oncologists - seek to inform about this very rare but poorly understood form of cancer. It has a poor survival rate; mainly affects children and teenagers but can emerge in older people. Its scarcity ensures difficulty in diagnosis and finding more effective treatments, compared with the more common cancers. Diagnosis is often delayed due to confusion with 'growing pains', sports injuries etc. Treatment is among the harshest cancer therapies.
A number of charities raise money into aspects of this cruel illness. I support the Mark Cross Bone Cancer Fund, part of University College London Hospitals Charities. All money raised goes straight into the UCH oncology research programme, as admin is provided by the existing UCLH Charities office. For more details see our website:
All support is greatly appreciated. Not everyone is in a position to contribute, but spreading awareness is just as important. Thanks for reading. Mark Cross was my late great brother-in-law.

A friend of mine has it. She complained for ages of back pain and was only diagnosed after she realised she was shrinking and insisted on being referred for further tests.

That's a familiar story. All the best to your friend and here's hoping the treatment works.

A friend of mine had it when she was 18. She lost the leg but the cancer never came back (this is thirty years ago).

There was a young lad on Channel 4's '3 minute wonder' after the news tonight, in UCH, getting used to walking again after the removal of a tumour, having chemo at same time. All the best to him.
