I have lived in the same rented house for 15 years. Apart from the first year, we have never bothered with written contracts. How much notice do I need to give him? I am assuming a month would be OK.

All my recent ones have been two months. But I've always had an updated contract, or not stayed longer than the initial contract.

Poppy, do you have your initial contract because you have been what is called holding over under that and that agreement will govern notice. I assume that fifteen years ago it will have been an Assured Shorthold Tenancy in which case holding over under that both parties are liable to give two months' notice.

Does this mean a major change in your living arrangements? In which case, I hope, many gratters.

Thanks, Sharpers - but no major changed, just need to move. Current house is too big, commercial noise is unbearable, house has no insulation and heating costs are therefore ridiculous and,as the last straw, water board is insisting that a 250% increase in my metered water bill, despite no changes in consumption, is normal (and landlord isn't interested in sorting)

Does it make any difference to notice period if house is furnished?

Sorry Poppy, just got back from a day out and seen this. No, furnished makes no difference at all.

Have you found somewhere new to rent?

Almost - but houses seem to move so quickly that you need to give notice almost before you have found another one. East Sussex is where I am heading to - closer to Glyndebourne! I did look around TW but season ticket costs a great deal more than from around here.

Hope you had a good day out.
