Welcome to the Mustardland Healthy Eating Club for October 13th 2009. The village hall doors are open, and you are welcome to enter and join in. Please don’t feel shy about joining us, as all the posters here are friendly, and some of them are extremely knowledgeable as well, so lots of good advice will be forthcoming.

There are followers of many different types of healthy eating here, from clubs such as Slimming World and Weight Watchers, to GL, low carb, and most things in between. We have few rules here, except that we ask that you don’t mention your real life weight, BMI, or dress size. This is because a starting point for one person could be a long held goal for another. Instead, feel free to mention pounds or kilograms gained or lost, or inches or centimetres for that matter.

The support here is phenomenal, and you will not be alone for long if you post. Please don’t be put off by the speed at which the thread moves at the moment. There are a few abbreviation that you will find here, the main one being KOKO (Keep on keeping on).

There are some sister threads that are also useful to MFC members. Katy’s cookbook has been around helping us to find healthy and tasty recipes. The old thread is here:

and the latest thread is here:

GEm’s cybergym, for all things exercise related:

Finally there is the rota thread , where we look for volunteers to open up the weekly thread, which is very easy, as I have just proved!

Above all, have a good week, and enjoy your healthy eating, as you will then feel the benefit!

    KOKO all.

I'm just bumping this above last week's thread so you can all find it easily.

It is a birthday week for a couple of us, but I've had my birthday blow out(s) at the weekend, so I'll try to be sensible (moi?) for the rest of this week. Wanda, I hope you have a great day on Wednesday, and don't feel guilty about any treats.

    Onwards and inwards folks.

Ta muchly for opening pug! As ever words of wisdom in the opening. Just bookmarking the new thread before going to bed.

Wanda, I hope you have a good birthday - btw I am still glad you persuaded me to buy a Bravissimo bra! Thanks!

Thanks for opening up Pug :0) It's good that you've mentioned the speed of the thread and I just wanted to say to Sadie, (and anyone else feeling they can't keep up with the chatter) please don't worry ... the main thing is to use this thread in the way which is most useful to you. I find it helpful to pop in a lot but I have chunks of time to spare which makes this possible.

I've had a good week and if I was weighing I am sure it would be at least a maintain and possibly a little loss. We don't have many social commitments at the moment which of course makes it a lot easier.

I hope you all have a good week.

My "D" day (departure) approaches within a week now and I have resigned myself to being stuck on the cusp of a stone-zone. I did hover below it but a vicious attack of the killer biscuit barrel has probably done me in for the week. Never mind, I am putting all my hopes in staying in a very healthy household as far as snacking is concerned for five weeks, combined with tropical heat, may melt a few pounds off.

I add my best wishes to Geepers for a speedy recovery. I dedicate my first portion of carrot cake and watermelon juice to her. Family will probably think I'm bonkers when I say, this one's for you, Geepers.

A good week to one and all ...

Ooh, probably won't be around till later, so just sending warm thoughts about 3 miles thataway to geepers. Hope she's back soon, she always posts a treat.

Dad's birthday last week and there was cake involved. But better today!

He has a couple of minor symptoms which are nagging at me but I think he feels ok. What to do? Only four weeks or so to his next scan (lymphoma). Bit off thread, sorry. Trying not to think about it last thing - so night night.

    Thanks for opening, countrypug!!

Arching - I wish I could go with you! Water melon juice is amongst my favourites but strangely enough I was never that struck with carrot cake - so you and Geepers can share that! Enjoy your time there.

VSM I know just what you mean about worrying in the dark of the night. I hope your Dad gets his symptoms sorted.

I had a good conversation with my Sis last night, she has far more personal experience of what EP is going through, though each one is different, and has told me in no uncertain terms to get back to doing something and not sit and fret! It is her birthday next week and we each make cards, me as a hobby, she now part owns a company. She is expecting a card from me - one of my special hand stitched ones - so if you don't see me in the evenings I may be actually doing something for a change!

Now to pack my healthy lunch, and off to work we go!

Half a pound on for me, which I feel is not anywhere near what I deserved as I have been... incautious? unrestrained? or just plain greedy... but we were on holiday, and we're home now, so all will be well again.

    KOKO everyone.

Thank you for opening up pug. I'm sure our openings make it easier for new members to cross the threshold.

I didn't manage to post on last week's thread, but I can report that at my weigh in it was a 'maintain' week. I expect this week will be similar, as we had a big family birthday at the weekend.

We are off to Spain on Saturday for a week. I'm so happy to be over a stone lighter than I was at the beginning of June. I will feel so much morecomfortable when the camera is ponying at me!

Hope you all have good weeks.

    Thanks for opening up Pug.

All good thoughts to geepers - we'll all be thinking of you.

Two pounds on today, so am not a happy bunny! My first gain since I started (plenty of maintains, mind). Obviously been taking my eye off the ball in recent weeks and with my back mishap last week, exercise has had to dramatically decrease. Am going to start keeping a food diary again for a couple of weeks. I think that it's easy for complacency to set in when you're several months into your plan.

Anyway, the good news is that my back is definitely improving, so hopefully it was just a blip and not another disc making a bid for freedom! Am going to have a swim today and maybe a turn on the cross trainer.

    KOKO one and all

Also reporting a gain - a whole 1.7kg. Mostly due to the amount of biscuit and cake and pudding and wine and other food consumed at the weekend. It's my first blowout since finishing feeding Owen, and it's had a much larger effect than it used to!

Ho hum, there's a pot of soup on the stove and tofu stirfry for tea tonight, so that's a good start.

Ooooh you are a luvverly lot for remembering -thank you so much!! The day is actually today - I am sitting here with a prosaic cup of tea just now but I have bubbly and lumpfish waiting in the fridge for a decadent breakfast. Meeting Ma later for Gazing at Things in Nice Shops and lunch, and then Mr Wandaful is planning something fabulous for supper*. And there are pressies and cards waiting to be opened.... I do love birthdays!!

'Onwards and inwards...' I love it.

*not that my birthday revolves around food, of course. Never think it.
*but seriously - it's all going to be light-but-fabulous stuff, f'rinstance I happen to know there are figs and Roquefort lurking...

Many Happy Returns to Wanda, and another set of good thoughts for Geepster on her last day in her current job and horspital admission this evening.

Quite despondant at the moment. My job situation is really getting me down and I am comfort eating and it is showing on the scales and how tight my clothes are.

Westie said the other week that even if I couldn't control the other things in my life I could control what I put in my mouth - well, apparently not. No matter how much I focus on the benefits of healthier eating, no matter how acutely I recognise that the chocolate isn't helping, I'm still doing it smiley - sadface

arg, Primrose, I'm so cross for you about the job thing. You've been so upbeat and helpful on this thread in the past, it's awful to hear that you're feeling so demoralised.

Could you get some darker chocolate, as strong as you dare? I find even I can't scoff too much of that in one go. I guess this might not work, because you are probably 'wanting' the fat and sugar, but it could be worth a try.

And buy some extra spesh healthy food, whatever is a real treat for you - some king prawns, avocado, gawd, mind's gone blank, but you get the drift I hope.

Or keep banging away at approximately healthy meals, and just don't worry about the extras you're having at the moment, knowing that you're giving your body good stuff too, so it will be in reasonable nick to start losing again.

Or do a bit more exercise, to try and create some more of those elusive endorphins, as well as working off the extras.

PP, huge sympathies. We've all been there. No point beating yourself up about it - that only increases the soddit factor. How about trying to ALSO do something that you KNOW is good for you - making sure you drink lots and lots of water each day, count off the 5-fruit-and-veg, going for a brisk ten-minute walk? It might be really good to be able to say to yourself 'yes, I scoffed, *but* I *also* did this, and this...'

    Just a thought.

    Happy Birthday Wanda : )

Glad to be back here again after 36 hours of no phone lines!

Yesterday was not good for me - and, apart from no phone, no internet, it all started with the best of intentions.

I decided to go for a nice healthy walk, part of which was along a narrow overgrown path. I managed to trip over a plant (!) and fell headlong into a ploughed field. I lay there for a few minutes then managed to get up and found all was OK. Stupidly, I had gone out without my mobile (which would have been of no use anyway, as no phones at home and OH gardening and never has his phone switched on anyway). Got home and eventually confessed to OH who has been very nice about it.

I was very hungry yesterday evening, so decided to go with it and had 2 or 3 extra snacks. Some cheese and some chamomile tea in bed last thing ensured a very good night's sleep.

Put Dettol on the grazes, and cushioned with some gauze. Today I have a very colourful knee - and feel achy everywhere! We just don't bounce back like we once did.

    Will forego exercise today.

    I feel very silly.

Mega sympathy Auntie Prue, too true we don't bounce back like we used to do (at least I don't! My recent bout of physio has been to get rid of a haematoma (is that just a bruise with attitude?) as a result of falling on November 30th last year, I can still see it, but it is so much smaller at last))

Primmers - I am also having trouble controlling what goes in the mouth. I did very well at first but last night I found some chocolate biscuits in the house .... need I say more? I think I only ate two but ... can't be sure.

Today is another day and I will try harder, will spend the evening making my sister's birthday card so won't be able to get my hands dirty!

uncontrolled food-in-mouthness here too. Had buns at coffee time to say goodbye (again) and I had half a caramel square (but it was a very big one) and a very small slice of coffee cake. And I don't even like coffee cake. And then I went to the canteen and got a whopper cajun chicken sandwich (brown bread though) even though I knew it wouldn't be good.

I think I need a cup of cinnamon tea.

Happy birthday Wanda (was there another birthday too?). And thank you all for your good wishes. And suitable gurny noises for Primmers and F-P with their ongoing stresses.

geepers - don't stress yourself. Just look at what you are eating and ask yourself why you would want to eat something that won't taste delicious. all that chewing and for what???

Can you go for a short walk to clear your head and calm your nerves? Remember this is for the hospital a routine op they probably do several times a day (I know not for you) which means they are likely to be very slick and very good at this. You are fit and healthy which means your recovery should be swift and you can gently work your way back to your old levels of fitness enjoying how your body responds.

If you are going to eat something think of what the most delicious thing you can think of is then go and get that. Sit down at a table in the sunshine if you can and eat it slowly savouring every mouthful.

I'm glad to have made it in here before you go geepers - so good luck, and as GEm says, the hospital will regard it as routine, although that wouldn't stop me worrying either. You certainly shouldn't worry about what you eat today - as you won't get anything till at least Thursday I'm guessing!

Wanda, many happy returns. We're not quite cyber twins then, as mine is tomorrow. Enjoy the champers and lovely food tonight.

Primrose, I'm so sorry that you are feeling carp, and about the job. It is such a bummer at the moment - I know a few people in similar situations, and it difficult to be upbeat. Cut yourself some slack, and as F-P says, try to just keep to small manageable steps for now.

JJ, hard luck on the gain, but at least it is explainable. It'll soon come off once you are back fully to your exercise.

AnneMarie - have lovely holiday, and congratulations on the stone off, great news.

VSM and F-P, I hope the worries are under control today - it is somehow worse when the worries are about a third party isn't it? Archi - you are heading nicely for that holiday. I always seem to be at a stone zone before one, and always come back over it, but you might manage to lose some with your healthy family trip.

Prue, so sorry to hear about your fall and bruises, and I hope you aren't stiffening up too much today.

Puzzler, commiserations on the gain, although not bad if a holiday was involved!

I've put 2lbs on thanks to my celebratory weekend, but I am determined to kick it in to touch whilst they are still weak pounds.

Sorry if I've missed anyone - wave if I have!

This might be of interest to some of you - but I will warn you that it is nearly an hour and a half long.

It is a lecture given by a professor of paediatrics in USA, who specialises in child obesity.

If you do decide to give it a go, I would just point out - because he doesn't deal with the question until far into the lecture, that he encourages eating fruit, for reasons he gives. However, he shows that fructose isn't all that good for us.

It gives much of the science behind the advice we are given.

I hope westie will enjoy it - as it backs up a lot of what she has to say.

Evening all, and thank you for all your kind words and suggestions. After I posted I had to go to Theatre to collect samples at an elective delivery. The staff had put a Burt Bacharach song compilation cd on, and the music lifted my mood no end. I think I'm going to buy myself a small cd player for the kitchen so when I go in there for a break or treat I have the option of a bit of music instead. And in case you're wondering, the song playing as the baby was born was Dusty Springfield 'The Look of Love' - what a wonderful welcome to the world.

I think the next few weeks are going to be really hard, I feel like a dead man walking at work. I'm making appointments for after I leave and being asked my opinion on how to manage things once I've left - apparently it's going to be difficult for them to cope. I feel like have a badge made - 'Do I look bothered'.

I know that I will end up with a job I like somewhere else. I'm educated and experienced and not afraid of either hard work or a challenge. And I've got an interesting cv. It's just the getting from here to there.

Anyway, enough of this self pity. No one died.

Thumbs up to the losers and wry shrugs to the gainers. Bon voyages to the travellers in our midst and get well soon to the Geepster.

I'll try and get in with a food diary tomorrow.

Morning all. I had stalled in weight at booking in weight plus 1kg, but made a pact at the weekend not to drink alcohol again until I've lost another x kilos, and have lost 1 of them already so confident I should be able to have a glass of wine with my Christmas Dinner.

Gob a wretched cowd today, not allowed to take much for it, have had some parrots-ate-em-all and wishing someone would bring me lemons and honey so I can make warm lemon and honey. May try to stagger to the co-op and fruit shop in a bit when the parrots kick in. O/h gave up trying to sleep next to my snuffling and went to work at 5am! Katie seems to weigh a stone more than she did yesterday, or possibly this stupid cold has left my arms pathetically weak.

Did try to read the whole thread before posting but can't concentrate at all. Will give it another go now.

Well, I know I said I wasn't going to weigh myself til the end of the month, but several people have commented that I look slimmer so I decided to pop onto the scales this morning.

When I started this healthy eating I weighed X stone and 2 pounds. This morning I weigh the next X stone down and 3 pounds. Almost a stone off in 6 weeks. Amazing

    Wahey, Sadie!

    Hello Helen!

Have had a really stupid *breakfast* but will try to do better as the day goes on.

Two weeks ago, I weighed in at Xstones 2lbs and looked like (and felt like) Mrs Michelin Man.
Last week, I was X-1 stones 10lbs, but I think most of that was due to *natural causes*. This week, have put 1 of those 6lbs back on, but not too worried as I think it's what should have happened. Still get this girly-stuff when it feels like it, so glad to be able to see with hindsight why I resembled a beached whale even more than usual.

Okay, so I'm still 5lbs lighter than I was 2 weeks ago and I'm gonna build on that. I usually find that at the beginning I can usually have a few *extras* without too much damage done, but I have to be more vigilant now.
And it's not just about losing weight: I want to gain feeling better in myself!

Targets? I could do with losing 2/3 stones really. If I can lose another 10lb between now and Christmas, I'll be pleased. Maybe I won't feel so tired if there's less of me to haul around.

    Catch you later!

    Nifty-fifty

Nifty ... somewhere recently someone said they weighed their shopping when they got home and found it weighed roughly the amount of weight they had lost ... it had felt like a really heavy bag!

Well done you will get there :0) I find it helps to
get variety into your diet ... don't get stuck with the same old same old.

nifty - just keep eating healthily - and the weight will come off.

The only thing I would say is perhaps not to set too rigid a goal. Somehow, LIFE knows when you are intend on being a certain weight by a certain time, and intervenes to thwart you.

Of course, a month later on you will have reached your goal plus some!! It is known as the Law of S*dd*t - and applies to weight loss regularly!

I found that reduced GL and a little regular exercise made all the difference - as did this messageboard.

Went to dentist today and chatted to nurse who lost a lot of weight a few years ago - commented that she had successfully kept it off. She said that she had got to her target weight with the help of Slimmers World, kept to it for a while, then decided to lost some more. She said that if you keep to your target weight - give or take 3 lb, the meetings are free.

I mention this because I have been known to belittle slimming clubs - so only fair to report that SW has been very succesful for this lady. I don't think SW is as intent on selling their own products as some!

What I have learned this week is that any processed food is a total No No. Watch the lecture I posted upthread to understand why.
I also now know why beer bellies happen - giving up alcohol (sadly) is a very good strategy in the fight against unwanted fat. BUT - the occasional snifter won't do any harm - and "may perchance do good".

A few traumas here wrt to eldest daughter - but will post worries about her in another thread if the need arises. I am very proud of her for dealing with some unpleasantness in her life in a strong manner.

Brilliant news Sadie, what a boost! I think 2lb a week is a healthy weight loss, so I don't think you're losing too fast. Hurray for you, and isn't it great to be getting positive comments, and know it's all down to YOU, making good choices.

Helen, wow you're doing well, if I've read correctly you are already down to booking-in weight. Grr to the grotty cold, there's some corkers around this year.

Nifty - you've made an amazing start, really inspiring to someone like me who's coming out of a month-long slide and getting back down to it now.

crunching away on carrots and peppers as I type. Been walking it off as much as I can again this week, so feeling quite hopeful for weekly Friday visit to the Boots scales!

oh well done, all those who have lost weight/feel better. Sympathy to those who have gained...slinking in to report a half pound gain from last week but only to be expected after the Great Cheesecake Marathon* + general overindulgence at the weekend. Still under the magic stone barrier though, even with dressing gown on, so quite relieved.

Hope all goes well for you geepers and catch up soon. Primrose, no advice other than sympathy for a carp time at the mo'. I know you know it'll get better (if that makes sense) but that doesn't stop it feeling rubbish now.

Auntie Prue, yes that regime is pretty much mine too and it's enabling a maintain (apart from when I blow out!). Hope all works out ok for your daughter.

Still No Crisps and it's 8 days without now. don't half miss 'em but oatcakes are filling the gap.

*Psst, Mermaid - it's in the Ö÷²¥´óÐã Good Food pull-out 80 best booklet this month, courtesy of Bill Granger

Waves to everyone else & apols to anyone whose news I've forgotten

Hi folks .... am worried about Mermaid eating fish ... is cannibalism healthy?
Back from 4 days away which should have been 2. Stress, motorways, aging relatives and other crisis-ridden family members mean that I have lost about 5 lb in these days .....
    Hmmm.
Looking forward to getting back on my own particular wagon. With your support of course!

If thinking someone's pain away will help, I'm thinking.
