Welcome all movers and shakers to this week’s MFC/Healthy Eating Thread!

Who are we? We are friendly folk, supporting each other in our quest to reach and maintain our ideal weight/body shape.
How do we do this? We all choose our own goals such as a particular weight or measurement and we use an array of methods to get there. The group does not advocate any particular method, so you’ll find mention of various groups here (eg Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Rosemary Conley), plus others like to use Glycaemic Load/Index as a way to help them achieve their goal.

When? We open up the doors once a week, and people post their successes and difficulties, advice and tips throughout the week. Some of us also post a food diary once a week – just to help focus the will and determination!

What else? As well as this main thread, there are 3 accompanying sister threads in TVH. We have the cybergym hosted by GEm who is a fount of exercise knowledge

Then there is the Cookbook monitored so beautifully by Katy Tulip – there you’ll find cooking and meal ideas and tips for making meals more healthy

Finally there is a rota thread where we volunteer for opening up the main thread each week.

Don’t forget our One Important Rule!! As in organised groups, we do not mention our actual measurements/weight – one man’s overweight might be someone else’s target. However we do talk in terms of lbs/kgs or cm/inches lost (or gained) on our journey.

So whether you’re a familiar face in these parts, or just starting out on your body image journey, please come in, make yourself at home and let us help you on your way!

    KOKO!

    AMx

PS I’m likely to be a bit busier than I expected to be this Tuesday, so I can’t promise to reply to every post, but I hope to pop in every now and again to see how things are going

    MOrning everyone!

A quite big loss here (I think about 1.5kg, but not entirely sure what I weighed last week) - down to my target (whoop whoop). That is the only nice thing to happen in the last few days, I've had a horrid flu and now chest infection and so totally lost my appetite. Went to the supermarket yesterday and bought some things to tempt me to remember to eat, so bananananas and custard is on the menu for today. I am remembering to drink (lots of hot blackcurrant) because it soothes the throat.

If I can maintain this week I am going to be very happy indeed, especially as I stopped the morning breastfeed in order to be able to take better drugs.

May I be the first to reply?

I'm in survival mode at the moment. I went away for the weekend which was fun though not good eating wise. I have come back with a vile sore throat, swollen glands and so on but can't duck out as I am travelling for work next week and have masses of stuff to work on before I go. Fortunately, I can do much of it at home and sleep when I need to. I will try to remember to watch what I eat as well (on top of the honey and lemon) but don't feel up to the gym.

I have not had time to to do more than skim the last thread but congratulations to all who lost, maintained or just ate and exercised well.

A happier Puzzler checking in with a 2.25lb loss and back in the top part of my maintain zone. I guess it's taking me a while to get used to the monthly fluctuations and the hormonal scoffing that goes along with them!

KOKO everyone, here's to a week of controlled eating all round.

Flutterby - sorry to hear you've got the lurgy - lots of TLC and fresh fruit winging its way to you. A big Well Done! on reaching your target!!! How does it make you feel? When you feel better, do plan in a reward for yourself.

Isabel - another one who is under the weather. I'll send a first aid parcel to you too. I think you are right not to worry about the gym - your body needs to feel well before you put the pressure on physically and we don't want you feeling even more yuck. I understand all too well about the trickiness of being away for the weekend, as we have recently had a week away followed by a long weekend (5 days) in Scotland visiting relatives. If we ate out, at least I was in control of what I ate (altho not hidden ingredients) so I could make as sensible choices as possible. When others select and make the menu, it's so much harder and I tried to restrict my portions.

Puzzler - what a fab loss!!! You must be so chuffed with yourself, especially as you are back in your maintain zone! (I'm still looking down on mine!) You make a good point about how hormones affect our weight and our appetites.

    KOKO everyone!

    Thanks AM....

The problem at the moment is that I have to force myself to eat, I know I need to becuase half the reason I am feeling so tired is because I have probably been eating less than 500kCal a day for the last 3 days (and about half of that came straight back up) but food just isn't tempting me at all at the moment.

I'm also gutted that this happened now in my last couple of weeks of not working - I could have been taking sick leave in 2 weeks time. Grrrr.

I'm just hoping I feel better enough to go out on friday night - black tie ball for a friends engagement. I'll not be drinking as I'll still be on antibiotics, but I was looking forward to bringing out the posh frock and having a jolly dance and a late night. I quite determined to go....... (and I can drive home saving a fortune on taxi fares!).

Yay, flutter-by! Well done on getting to your target. Sorry that
you and Isabel have the lurgy. Hot lemon, honey and much
    sympathy to you both.

Well done, Puzzler! It must be a great feeling to be back in your
    maintain zone as well.

Reece's Cups 1 - FGB 0. I talked to it . Left it where it was, then
decided, as Geepers said, I think, that life's too short. So I ate it
and thoroughly enjoyed it. It didn't send me spiralling into a frenzy
of stuffing my face as I thought it might, so all was well.
I think that you lot have the best outlook on healthy eating - if
you have a bit of a *slip*, just get back on the horse and carry on.

Yikes, is it safe to post here - lurgies all round!!

I've not bothered to weigh or measure myself this week but probably will next week. I've been lucky with a maintain or tiny gain for the last 6 weeks while everything went horribly pear-shaped but (entirely thanks to MFC) the one thing that didn't go pear-shaped was me!!

So... why am I here if I'm currently not interested if growing slimmer and lighter? Because I am now "self-medicating" the last of the reactive depression out of my system... a process that utilised lots of vodka in my younger years and now utilises really good nutrition and exercise these days!

Food is such a powerful thing... all of us know our emotions are caught up with the stuff, but it goes both ways in that the food can alter how we feel, change our mood at a chemical level. We trot off to the doctor's and pop pills - sedatives, sleeping-tablets, anti-depressants... and we don't realise there is a certain extent* to which we can do this ourselves by paying attention to our intake!

So... energy-drinks went sky-high at the weekend, and are now being reduced daily (5 yesterday, I MAY NOT have more than 4 today, 3 tomorrow, etc); I've brought back in the 99%-cocoa chocolate instead (no sugar at all, ingredients just cocoa-mass and vanilla extract).
Food: portion-awareness is back. Healthier choices wherever possible. Less snacking, and slow-burn snacks where possible.
Water: lots and lots of it. And then some more. It fills you up, it lets all your organs function as they should, wonderful stuff. And your skin glows!
Exercise: 10,000 steps yesterday, including trotting off out in the dark along busy people-filled pavements to get the last couple of thousand. A meeting today I'm walking back from so I should get the 10k again. And tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow....

Onwards!! (and get well soon, everyone!)

    laura

First of all thanks to AM for opening up - and doing far better with the title than I did last week!

Mega commiserations to Isabel and Flutterby - I know just what you mean about being sick when not working. I had a 48 hour bout of real lurgy last month when I was already on leave. Anyway I hope you are both feeling a lot better soon.

Well done Puzzler - I only had 17 months between the Piglets so I remember what you mean about things suddenly returning to your life!

FGB you are doing so well - yes you ate it but just one of them and you got back onto the Healthy Eating Waggon.

I'm off work today and tomorrow. I am planning, once I've finished in ML, of a big veggie cook up and then a mammoth tidying session. So wish me well!

You know, I read that as being:
    Reece's Cup - Nil
    fallinggillybean - One

How can you say the Reece's Cup "won" when actually what happened is that you sat and thought, reached a considered decision to eat and ENJOY a single Reece's Cup, and stop there, having had a nice treat for once in a while?

Who was the one making decisions based on rational evidence? Not the Reece's Cup!!

If you'd decided to eat one and then scoffed a few dozen, or gone out and got more or any of the other things most of us are familiar with, then yes, you could say the sweet stuff "won".

But we are ALLOWED to be human!

The 80:20 thing... I don't remember where it's from, but it's often quoted here - you eat healthily and sensibly at least 80% of the time, then you're doing okay. There's a little leeway so you can live your life, instead of having your life controlled by food!

    So well done! Congrats!

eta.... this is a mini target that I got to, not the TARGET (sorry to cause undue excitement!). I don't quite know what that is going to be yet, but there are a few stone still between now and reaching it. So I set myself small goals that seem achieveable and gradually get closer to the big number.

This target means that I am 10kg lighter than when I got pregnant, and about the weight I was in my final year at university.

Next target is down quite a bit - another 5kg. Takes me into a new stone zone and to merely being overweight according to BMI calculators.

One nice thing from the last couple of weeks - OH took some photos of me when we were cycling the other day and they didn't look too bad. Considering how unflattering cycling clothing is that has to be a pretty major achievement!

Morning all. Flutterby and Isabel, your lurgies sound grim. I had The Throat not long ago, but fortunately I didn't feel hugely unwell on top of it, just t-i-r-e-d. Hope you are feeling much better soon, especially poor Fluts who sounds Horribly Ill.

Glad you caught some of my Ms yesterday, Laura! I've got some more to throw over the beginning of the new thread. That's M for Motivation, for those who missed my post yesterday. Mine had been missing for a while, but when it returned it was hale and hearty, and I've got plenty to share.

Forgot to tell my salutary tale yesterday. My rings have been obviously loose for a while now. At the park with the boys on Saturday afternoon (bitterly cold day, so fingers at minimum girth), I chose that moment to illustrate to Mr P just how the wedding and engagement rings jangle - shook my hand far too dramatically and they both flew off!

The engagement ring was quickly found, but unbelievably, despite four of us scouring the area (soft muddy grass, doh), we couldn't find the wedding ring.

So, anyone who's thinking "ooh, these are getting a bit loose", take it seriously, or you could regret it. smiley - sadface

No we don't fgb. What I have done is put a card in the window of a nearby shop, because I thought if someone finds it, it is so obviously a wedding ring that most people would want to try and reunite it with its owner.

Silly me! A friend had told me about little soft plastic thingies you can get to keep your rings on until such time as you get them properly re-sized. Why hadn't I got around to getting some?

Oh no - what a ring distaster! I second trying to get hold of a metal detector, or failing that check to see if it's covered on your household insurance.

Mine fell off while washing up a few weeks ago, which prompted me to take it to the jewellers to get it taken in a couple of sizes. It came back very very shiny and new looking, and now stays on safely.

It only cost about £20, so it really is worth the hassle.

A quick whizz back in from me to see how things are going.

Sorry to misunderstand your target flutter-by, but well done anyway. How are you feeling about going back to work? I find it really helpful to get my working day lunches organised in advance (eg roasted veg couscous with salad leaves) - this saves me being sabotaged by the prawn mayonnaise sandwiches!

You're all making really good points about not beating ourselves up when we stray from the straight and narrow. It's important to plan in treats, otherwise we feel deprived and will feel resentful of our weight loss regime. So whether you count syns, use the 80:20 formula or allow yourself a square of chocolate a day, that's fine. So fallinggilybean - enjoy your reece's cup.

Following up from that, there's a lot to be said for how we react when we have overindulged. We could have a hissy fit that we have failed and give up there and then.. Or we could think, ah well, what's done is done, and then use what has happened to increase our determination to try harder. It's up to us - what we we and do with food is in our control!

Laura I'd hate you to think the MFC is only for losing weight/making changes. It is just as important to have a support network when you are maintaining. A regular point de repere can also help guard against little inches/pounds creeping on too. Certainly in my RL group, once you are at target, it's free to attend group and you are encouraged to do so... BTW Laura - how did the dress go down at the event?

Fire-pig nice to see you. Glad my opening was ok - I was quite nervous about doing it!!!!

OP - well the weight loss is great, but not the loss of gold! That's such a shame. How can it have disappeared?

There was something else I was going to post, but my memory fails me! Oh yes - thanks for reminding me about BMI. That's another way of setting a target to work towards.

    AMx

Am - If I'm honest about going back to work, it's somewhere between 'don't want to' and 'fear and loathing of the concept of working'. There's nothing I can think of that I want to do less than put Owen in nursery and go back to work. But needs must - I'm lucky that I earn enough that I can afford to go 3 days a week and cover childcare while having enough money left over to be a little better off than we are now with maternity pay.

I'm really hoping that it's not going to be as bad as I think it is, but we'll see in a couple of weeks.

OP I'll take your advice about rings to heart. It is all very well geepers saying new jewellery but a wedding ring is so much more. Mine is made of Ghanaian Gold as we met in Ghana. Since you ask, at a conference of Maths and Science teachers - of all romantic places. The rest of my Ghanaian gold and my engagement ring were stolen some years ago, so I'd hate to lose the wedding ring. I now wear an eternity ring OH gave me on for out 20th anniversary as an engagement ring- although it has lost two stones. I can't see the flaws without my glasses!

My watch bracelet is loose now, I'll have to investigate how to tighten that soon! With a hand in the way I'm not going to lose it!

Vegetable soup is nearly ready for eating, some will be eaten at lunch time and the rest frozen for future quick meals. I think it will probably count as all 5 of my fruit and veg for the day! There is also a beef and vegetable casserole in the oven for tonight and freezing. A productive morning.

I stopped to have coffee with OH, and was horrified to see him with a large packet of crisps just picking as he read a book and drank his coffee. I very rarely eat crisps and not my choice with coffee anyway. After several minutes of this I did say to him "You're just eating without thinking or even enjoying those" he did look a bit guilty! Most days he's at home by himself.

Isobel and her junky telly, and hopefully not too much junky food ... though jelly and sore throats are almost unseperate able ... oh can't spell ... sorry. It must be possible to make healthy jelly with wizzed up fruit/juice.

I hope you feel a bit better tomorrow.

Oh Isabel I am sorry, I hope that it doesn't linger.

Serendipity struck just now - in the book I was reading someone was eating Reece's Peanut Cups - and had chocolate running down his face. Before the other day I wouldn't have known what it was, nor why there was chocolate.

Thanks for all the good wishes - feeling less shaky now, but still with the family not upstairs alone.

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better F-P, I've just messaged you elsethread.

Thanks for opening AM, and well done to all of you losers (in the nicest possible way of course). I'm another one with the MFC lurgy. I feel ok in myself but I'm coughing loads, and therefore not that keen on any exercise other than a walk with the dogs. In addition to which the weather is really damp and foggy here. I have to report a gain of just over a kg, which is all self inflicted, as I've had a couple of weeks of messing around. Socialising, then hormones, and now the lurgy have been all used as excuses to not knuckle down and get on with the weight loss. So, OP's Ms have flown in yesterday and I had a sensible day both yesterday and today, with no rubbish.

I have a mammoth pan of cauliflower soup on the cooker, mainly because there was a lovely gigantic cauli in the shop earlier, and I couldn't resist it. With a touch of grated cheese on the top, it will make some good healthy lunches.

Fluts, well done on the mini target - and 10kg lighter than when you got pregnant is absolutely brilliant. I hope going back to work is better than you think it will be. You'll probably find that Owen will love nursery - my two both loved going to the child minders (I was also lucky enough to go back part time).

OP, so sorry about the wedding ring. I have noticed some of mine loosening, and have moved one ring onto my middle finger (a dress ring). My engagement ring fortunately is reasonably sized, so it keeps the others in place. DH lost the signet ring he got when we got engaged, in a gravel car park. He even got someone with a metal detector to go over it, but to no avail. I bought him another one, and lo and behold, 2 years later the original was found in the same car park (fortunately it was a farm car park where they remembered him). So he had two for a while, and then lost the replacement!

    Have a good week all.

I'm just sticking my head in briefly, prior to watching Muriel's Wedding with my sister ("But I'm beauuuuuutifulllll") to tell you that AT LAST I've had a relatively healthy meal. Heaps and heaps and heaps of roast veggies with a v restrained amount of halloumi. About flippin' time. (And glossing over the v necessary crisps while we were cooking, due to having had v late hospital appointment...)

Enjoy the film Geeps. Oddly, I watched this for the first time about 6 weeks or so ago (on TV), as I had always missed it before. I really enjoyed it, it wasn't at all what I expected.

I forgot earlier that I did get back to aquafit last night for the first time for weeks, as either my colleague was ill or I was, or work was too manic. That was another notch for the good week ahead.

Fire-pig, I'm so sorry to hear about your colleague. Wrap yourself
in the warmth of your family. Tidying up is not important.
Who'd have thought my wrestling with a Reece' Cup would have
    come in useful?

Geepers, I love Muriel's Wedding. Such a good film. Well done on
your healthy meal, it sounds lovely. I used to do a griddled halloumi with blackcurrant sauce, the tartness of the sauce goes
    really well with the cheese.

Tuesday is my WW meeting night. I lost 2lbs, so I'm over the moon.
I've just had tagliatelle with smoked salmon, mushrooms and Philadelphia cheese with chives. Twas good.

Hey, Westie, I found some Nairn's oatcakes. So I'll take those to
work and try them tomorrow. I also bought some with herbs and
pumpkin seeds, they sounded good, so I thought I'd try them too.

I hope all lurgy sufferers are feeling a bit better and snuggling
    up nice and warm.

Good morning one and all. Here it is a beautiful sunny morning just as if all is well with the world. As was brought home to me yesterday we can never know what the day will bring, but we can do our best.

I have a day off again today and will try to do the tidying this morning before having a mammoth curry making this afternoon.

    KOKO one and all

    Dear Fire-Pig,
"just as if all were well with the world" ... I am so sad you are sad and shaken.
I hope the cooking helps ... for me it is such a pleasure (therapy) and making curries almost best of all.
I am putting lunch together for a friend coming in an hour or so and would like to invite you to join us, cyber-style.
We are having courgette and thyme soup made with a good chicken stock I made earlier.
Then little ribbons of beef stir-fried ... they are marinading in garlic and ginger and sesame seeds at present. Onions and green beans in the pan too.
Raspberries and blueberries (the colours make my mouth water) with Greek yoghurt.
Healthy, no? But I suppose you might be a vegetarian? Then I will rustle up a chestnut stir fry for you.

Ana, I would be honoured to join you! It sounds an absolutely gorgeous lunch and just the sort of food I love to eat.

Yes I have been shaken, just to explain for anyone who did not see the Candle thread, a friend and work colleague keeled over and died at work yesterday. He was younger than me and although he was seeing the doctor for a medical problem, it seems this was unrelated to that. I can't stop thinking about his family, his delightful little grandson, his pride and joy. Sorry!

There's also a horrible niggle inside me as it may mean that Younger Piglet will now have a permanent job rather than the temporary contract he has been on this year. He has been home with depression most of the time since the week of 9/11 but has been working well this summer and everyone has been pleased with him. Not the way I would want YP to get on, literally stepping into dead man's shoes but someone will have to do it. I haven't said any of that to OH or YP.

Off to change into my glad rags for my cyber lunch!

    F-P

I think that's a perfectly reasonable thing to think, F-P. 'In the midst of life we are in death' works the other way around too.

Can I offer some roasted veg soup to add to the lunch too? It's just that there were a L O T of leftovers from last night (deliberately) and there's a huge pan of soup a-simmering.

    hello all

reporting in with a minor rise of 0.5 lbs which considering it's been a carp week at work with a bag of crisps each day since Monday, isn't too bad. On the plus side I didn't eat any of the baked goods brought in for someone's birthday and nor have I had any chocolate from the canteen.

Sorry to hear about people's lurgy and FP, what a dreadful shock for you, so sorry to hear that. But you shouldn't feel bad about the implications for YP, honest. It's not like you bumped your other colleague off deliberately!

Well done to you FGB - that's a great thing to hear. Hope you enjoyed the oatcakes, too.

to everyone else & hope all's going ok.

    Hi all,

Sorry to hear you've both got the lurgy, Pug, Fluts and Isabel, hope you're feeling better soon. And so what if it's an interim target, Fluts - give yourself an interim reward!

Congrats on the loss, Puzzler smiley - smiley

Well done on surviving the visits away, Anne-Marie. I've just spent a weekend visiting relatives and we're off to a weekend with friends this coming weekend, so I know how difficult it is to eat well when you're not the one in charge.

FGB, I agree with Laura, that was a victory for YOU, not the treat.

Laura, I love <"(entirely thanks to MFC) the one thing that didn't go pear-shaped was me!" > How often MFC has got me out of similar predicaments. Well done on the 10k days, I'm walking more than I used to these days but I'm pretty sure I'm stil nowhere near that.

Fire Pig, sorry to hear you had bad news. And can I have some of the curry please, I'm a curry addict.

Orange Pekoe, gutted to read about the rings. Can you hire a metal detector? My dad had to do that once, when his wedding ring flew off into a bonfire. He did find it again. O/h has lost his wedding ring but not somewhere we can try detecting it. I am a bit gutted that it doesn't seem to mean too much to him to have lost it, actually! He won't even ring up and put in an insurance claim, and I'm (star star star star)ed if I'm doing it for him...

Waving to Westie, Ana and Geepers.

PinaGrigio, well done on avoiding the birthday foods and canteen chocolate. Always used to get me, those. Being out of the office is probably the single thing that's had most effect on my weight (ok, and having Katie).

News from the Helen&Katie camp is good. Katie has put on weight, Helen has lost some. Ok, this week it was mostly due to rushing around everywhere and not getting any lunch, but my milk's not affected so I reckon I can do that once in a while without ill effect.
I think I've lost 1.2kg in the last week, and that included no fewer than three pub meals at the weekend while we were in the North West visiting Katie's great-grandma, various great aunts etc.

Off to Cotswolds with friends this weekend, so more disruption to the diet. But I'll still not be drinking alcohol as I've given it up til I lose another 5.3kg (with a day off for Christmas) so things might not go /too/ terribly wrong.

KOKO all, and big apologies if I've missed anyone out.

    Helen
