I love cricket, me.
Let's have a chat about it.

Did you see Trescothick on Ö÷²¥´óÐã1 this evening (Wednesday)? It was aprogramme about sportspeople who have (had) depression.

I have taped the programme, Torquil, & will see it this weekend.
I love to see Tres bat & hope his anxiety doesn't affect his captaincy.
Good to see this thread back. Thanks, Slow.
Hey, less of the slow, more of the medium. I have my pride. Maybe I'll be mediumslow from now on.
Commetators reckon that a side effect of 20/20 is keepers standing up to everything except real pace. Surely that was Godfrey Evans to Alec Bedser/Jack Russell to all Glos bowlers, so nothing new.
They've been doing it to me for years but in my class of cricket they drop all the nicks.
I shall catch up with Tres. Sounds fascinating and very human.

Yes, even Knotty used to satnd up at times!
A very interesting interview in cricinfo with Sir Geoffrey.
I know he's annoying at times but he knows his creekit...
Top article by Harry Pearson on North/South via Collingwood/Gower. I know exactly what he means.
Well, any-one else watching the ODI, Broad and Swanny back, lots of all-rounders in our side.
I.T. Botham 'not sure' if Broad should have the new ball, he is favouring Bresnan. Bumble agreeing.
SA won the toss, the wonderful Alan Donald declaring 'win the toss, win the match ' on this ground.
Cricket, I love it.
SA have won the toss 12 times out of the last 12 matches here, and won all 12. What is all that about? It's a fix. Dirty rotten fix. Not watching but skiving.
Well that's captain fantastic gone for a 54.
Still that inevitable feeling of a massive SA score followed by a valiant England reply let down by another KP failure.
Always drawn comparisons between cricket and TA, I mean for both of them most of the time we know what's going to happen, and yet we remain glued.

I suspect not
Back watching , S-i-L left , but did bring me Feddie's 'Ashes to Ashes' book as a birthday present, so all is not lost.
Gawd a batting powerplay, must be 350+ surely?
Might have to do Gallent Losers this time.
{Nass has just said 5 overs of sloggage }

Gallant?
cheers
matty
Well, Matty, I thought that is what England supporters do best .
354, any-one fancy our boys doing that ? Pitch looks flat, outfield fast ... KP and Trott maybe.

Great stories on TMS: Botham & his birthday cake made of iced elephant dung & GB being stripped naked on the coach & having his privates sprayed with crazy foam.
As for the game: Come on Colly!
Blimey , I must turn TMS on, obviously I am missing the best. Have the TV on , very low, as DS is here, nd does not share my love of cricket.
They've got a lot to do.

DOES NOT SHARE LOVE OF CRICKET!
Phelpa, what sort of mother are you??
Good evening, dere, & give that boy a whack.
TMS is really on form atm. Boycs seems to have mellowed.
'DOES NOT SHARE LOVE OF CRICKET!
Phelpa, what sort of mother are you?? '
The worst
'Tis to my everlasting shame, PB. [Whispers] He doesn't like tennis either.
I can assure you, it is not for want of trying.
I gave him three targets to reach by his 25th birthday,
1. Open the batting/bowling for England.
2. Win Wimbledon.
3. Make maiden speech in the House of Commons
He has been such a disappointment [Sigh].

You just can't get the sons nowadays, can you?
Not looking too hopeful for us is it?
No, PB, it is not,
Boycs talking a lot of sense about the Doosra just now, I mustardmit.
Re sons , I know, however he is cooking the supper, so it's not all bad.

What a super performance by England. I hope the batsmen don't collapse. Jimmy looking sharp now.
SA really missing Kallis. Batting looking very fragile without him.

It's great, isn't it? As you say, fingers crossed our batters can do the business.

So here you all are!
England doing really well this morning.
SA missing Jacques Kallis (mind you, so am I).
SA seem fragile and unable to cope with conditions not perfect for batting.
In a situation like this, where they have to bowl us out, they will miss Steyn (and are already).

In a situation like this, I would have thought SA would have really gone for an all-out attack. There's been some rum field placings, IMO.
I don't know a lot about the test venue wickets; anyone know what each will favour re the toss, bowling?
'SA missing Jacques Kallis (mind you, so am I).'
I know SC, and, in my case, Lance Kluesner.
Well, didn't they do well, s*ds law I was out to-day, and in on Friday when we were so dire.
PB, can't help you about the wickets, let's hope some-one can enlighten us.
Good-oh, we have just won. The bowling must have been sensational, and Trott looks very classy.

In my case, Shaun Pollock.
Great performance by England today, but surely Smith made the wrong choice on winning the toss? (Good old hindsight, eh.)

Hindsight gives me 20/20 vision. G.Smith looks very cross, understandably.

It was very confusing this am when I came to, to hear about Peterson & Pieterson.
I hope our boys don't go into the Test series too cocky.
Mind you, these ODIs aren't over yet...

You and me both PB. I turned on the radio and thought: "we're batting / we're fielding". Took me a couple of minutes to focus and realise who they were talking about in each case.
I don't know about the wickets for the Test Matches either, Phelpa. I am not that technically astute.
Is Shaun Pollock doing any commentary? I thought he was really good when SA were over here and he worked for both TMS and Sky.
Sun, 29 Nov 2009 16:25 GMT, in reply to S33) in message 31
I think I heard that Polly will be joining the TMS team (and Sky?) during the Tests. Hooray!
I agree re Polly, he was excellent on commentary. I would like to hear more of him.
He was balananced, fair and knowledgeable, I thought, what more can one ask ?
Did anyone catch the 'norty thing' that Boycs said today? I only heard the apology made in case anyone had been offended.
I'm very, very excited because I'm going to the Cape Town test. Never been to SA before. Anyone been and any tips?
Sun, 29 Nov 2009 19:23 GMT, in reply to pahnda in message 34
Missed Boycs being 'norty'.
How exciting, pahnda. I've been to Cape Town, and it's great, but there was no cricket on at the time.
Take a township tour if you have time - quite an eye opener. Also the trip to Robben Island was fascinating. And the Cape Peninsula itself is stunning. And Table Mountain, and the wineries, and ... and ...
So much to do and see lambswool, I'm quite hoping the game might finish in four days, with an England win of course, to give a bit more time for sight-seeing.

The ODI results seem to have little bearing on the Tests.Didn't England win the last series against SA 5-0 after losing the Test series?
Well everybody knows test matches are Micky Mouse cricket.

Swann looks to have booked his place after his five wkts & 30-odd runs in the draw.
I gather Jimmy is injured again.
Any views on Gooch's appointment as batting coach?
He always appeared to me to be a very tough player, as hard on himself as he was on others, so I cannot imagine he will be a push-over.
Good understanding of batting, I think he could do well.
Not sure that Both or Gower care for him too much IIRC.

Afternoon, all. I've just been wondering how to start a discussion on cricket now that the shouty new people have taken over cricket in the Bull.
Thanks for starting it, Slowers.
I love cricket too. It's wonderful listening to proper test cricket (referral system notwithstanding) on TMS while snow's on the ground here.
I hope from the point of view of an exciting finish to this match that Smith declares with a few overs to go tonight, but from England's point of view they're more likely to avoid defeat if he bats on and on...

Yup. It's a good opportunity for them to show that they can build match-saving innings rather than hitting out at all and sundry. We know that both of them can. It sounds as though they're both doing well so far.
Been playing Boycott bingo. All the usual ones:
- 'He's playing him like he's bowling hand-grenades.'
- 'My mum could 'ave 'it that wi' a stick of celery.'
- the anecdote about Jack Niklaus
- etc.
