by the cat rescue lady to see if we are suitable to home two three year old tabbies. Is there anthing you think I should ask her, apart from:
What is their particular favourite foods?
Are they indoor or outdoor cats?
What were the circumstances in which they were "rescued"?
Are they "nervy" cats?
Do they sleep together, or apart?
Do they like each other (brother and sister) spayed and denutted, I believe?
(Oh dear, just as I am typing I had one of those moments when I thought Jazz had walked into the room, she keeps doing that, out of the corner of my eye.)
I can resist the blandishments of first and second damson no longer. 2D has written "cat" on his Christmas wish list.
Damson
Would they like 2D to sing them a lullaby at bedtime? (This may cross over with your 'are they nervy cats?')
I hope all goes well and that Damson Villas is judged to be a establishment.
Dunlurkin
We asked advice about how to help the cats adapt to their new surroundings, esp how long we should keep them indoors.
On the latter, we were told 3 weeks, but couldn't last that long because the 2 cats could squeeze through the tiniest gap and it was a suffocating hot spell. The big windows all face south and the house was becoming unbearably hot for all its occupants!

Ooh how exciting Damson. I hope you are all really happy together.
one of those moments when I thought Jazz had walked into the roomÂ
Maybe she did. You're talking to someone who almost broke her neck stepping over a friend's dog on the stairs during a visit. I hadn't seen her for 3 years and turned out her lab had been dead for 2 years.
Good luck with the visit. They'd be mad to turn you down.
I sure you will be a wonderful servant to your new two.
Good luck

The thing is, Jazz seems to be making determined efforts not to have any other cat in the house. I think I feel her curl round my legs when I least expect it, she rolls over in my dreams, and I wake up wondering if I have "fed the cat". This anxiety dream used to cause me trouble quite regularly when she was alive. I long to feel her fur, which was beautiful and thick in winter, and made you sneeze. I know no other cat will fill her place (second to THE cat Nemesis, my very late lamented siamese), and that other cats needs a place to lord it over us. In fact I still grieve over her. It won't be the same, but it will be different in a nice kind of way to have two cats again. Jazz made damn sure we wouldn't even contemplate another cat in the house. But a bit of me is still in thrall to her.

Their names are, apparently, AWOL and ASBO, doesn't give me much confidence! It'll be Wally and Beau if I have my way, or maybe even Paws and Fingers.
Damson
Damson,
We went through this to get our two (brother and sister) rescued cats. IIRC it was more a case of us answering the many questions asked by the inspector lady.
Good luck.

Damson
If your Inspector is anything like my Inspector, I wouldn't worry.
She came in, sat down, got out all her literature etc and proceeded to ask her questions.
The first one was - had I ever had a cat before, at all..........? I indicated the large orange furry thing sitting on the back of her chair and purring furiously down her ear. She smiled serenely and said she was required to ask.............
Damson, I do home visits sometimes for CP and I hope that your visitor is as nice as I try to be. I'd be well chuffed if you asked all those questions.
Your descriptions of Jazz have made me well up. As did 2D writing 'Cat' on his Christmas list.
Cat x
Jazz seems to be making determined efforts not to have any other cat in the houseÂ
Damson, maybe you're looking at this the wrong way. Perhaps Jazz is reminding you how lovely it is to live with cats and giving you a nudge to move on. No cat ever fills the hole left by others, but eventually the good memories triumph over the sadness. We love them all in different ways.

That's how it seems to me, as well - Jazz's presence seems a lovely thing, so it'll be a win-win thing, it might stay, or it might transfer its warmth to the presence of a real cat, or it might be a transient sweet memory.

Im glad that 2d is more obedient than my 2 about writing a Christmas list. I am still waiting.
I know that given carte blanche dd would like a cat and a rabbit for Christmas despite being 21. Unfortunatly although I would like both my OH wont hear of having anything other than a dog ( we did have cats but they came as part of the package with me and have never been replaced).

No Posh there is however a very strong male anti cat feeling in this house. The only male who seems to like cats is the dog and he is kind of fascinated by them as he doesnt really know any.
Damson, they'd be mad not to give you the thumbs-up, damson (or is it really the thumbs-down and we've all been getting it wrong through the centuries?). After, all Jazz must have been an exacting trainer. Although she wouldn't have stood for you adopting other cats when she was around, I am sure she would want you and second damson to be taken in hand by another/others of the feline persuasion, wouldn't she?!
The only other thing you might ask is what litter the cats have been using, as cats often don't appreciate a sudden change.
May I put in a plea to those adopting new, or even moving house with, incumbant cats? However confident and bold they might be, cats can become very nervy and upset when out of 'their' territory in a new home.
I wish rescue societies would give advice on confining cats to just one room for a few days at least (longer if very timid or there are other animals in the household and slow and careful intros need to be made). It can make all the difference in making cats more confident and settle more quickly.
Good luck (not that I think you'll need it).

Huh! Mine hadn't read the manual. When Senior Cat and Second Cat came to live with me (they were 6 months old), I put the cat carrier in the kitchen, and made a cup of tea. (I'd already put down a litter ray, water and food.) Then I opened the carrier.
Senior Cat immediately walked over to the table and sat on a chair while he surveyed the kitchen. Second Cat made a beeline for the kitchen bin, knocked it over, and emptied it. Then they looked at me as if to say, "Okay, now what?"
Good luck, DJQ. I hope you have as good an experience with your rescue cats as I have with mine (and their predecessor.)
G-AC
Good luck today, DJQ, I hope you're considered an acceptable slave to two more cats.
When we got our 4th cat, Spare Cat or Ellis as he became known (and is still known), he just walked in, sat on the chair, went to sleep and that was that. But then he wasn't planned, he was "stolen" (by Baldrick, who keeps bringing his friends home) so I suppose we didn't get the chance to do a proper introduction.
Not sure what time your being "done" Damson but hope it is/ has/will go well. ( delete as appro)
Love the name Wally BTW.

Done and dusted - we are suitable. (We had a mega clean up as well so we looked suitable, on the surface.) I think the inspector was impressed that I knew that if you keep fleas under control you help keep worms under control, and that the two creatures were linked. Bit like bubonic plague, I suppose.
1D wants to call them Plato and Socrates, but I think that's pretentious, Tristan and Isolde is much more down to earth.
We are waiting on a phone call to be able to go and see them.
Damson
yay! Told you it'd be fine.

Damson,
Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday but I'm glad it all went well. Hope you get them soon. We went through lots of 'pair' names and in the end had to settle on Sid and Nancy - simply because as a scared young kitten he really was vicious!

Very good news Damson. I hope they take up residence soon.
Now 2D wil have to find something else to put on his list. (Maybe you could jsut add the word bowl or mat or litter to the request for a cat.)
I think Plate and Sock are not the the sort of names you would want to be calling out the back door. Wally and Beau (Bo?) would be great.

Snap, DJQ. Congratulations and hope your new friends arrive soon. I know what you mean about seeing the dear departed out of the corner of your eye. In my case it is Kirsty's tail just whisking round the door.
My new employer has recently given birth and I'm having to wait for the kittens to be old enough to leave before she can come to me. But I'm going to tea with her at the weekend.

My new employers are here. They have inspected the new premises and have graciously decided to stay. 1D wants them renamed as Rosa and Plato. We'll see. The boy is a very big lad.
They have pointed out the various defficiencies in my housework (every bit of crud in the house gravitates to the back of the sofa), and I will endeavour to improve.
We are letting them explore and make themselves at home and giving them a quick stroke when they come within range. I have brought out the big guns and have cooked them some chicken for tonight's meal.
When I can get the hang of posting piccies on the computer, I will let all and sundry have a look.
Damson
Damson, one of my nieces is one of these inspector ladies so I very much hope you didn't find yourself up against her - think she has taken as her role model the Reverend Mother in her very strict convent skule, and she certainly scares the daylights out of me.
Anyway, glad you passed muster and have now been suited!
Good luck.
