As Rusty suggested, here is the new thread for the wider range reading club for those wanting to discuss books more in general.
You can also use this thread to recommend books you have particularly enjoyed, or offer to host a month's discussions.
The current list of topics follows:-
January - Sequels and Prequels, Rwth
www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb...
February - Beginning a new life in another country - Mag Pie
March - Is the Short Story Dead? - Rusters
April - Girls' fiction before 1920, Dean Volecape
May -
June - Poetry of Rage - Rwth
July - Dystopian Novels - Rusters
August
September
October
November
December
Please see future dates unfilled. How about the works of Arnold Bennett for May, and another author for August. I am rapidly cooling on my offering for June, so watch this space for other ideas. If you have an idea of something you'd like to do make a claim, for the month you'd like to do it. June is still up for grabs if you want to do it. A genre, a sub genre, poetry welcome, the works of an author, even one we have already done more than say a year ago. Maybe the complete works of an author who has had one work discussed in Book of the month? We don't have to be too precious about our choice. It can often get quite abstruse and an author can be revealed as having hidden depths, Or not so hidden. Don't be shy?

Oh dear. I forgot to say that we start on 1st of the month, and the Book of the Month starts on 21st of the month.
and the current book of the month is Carrie's War
You will find the Genre of the month (January) in the post above at the top of the list.
Enjoy!

I seem to be on my own here. Hello! is there an echo here ...here?
Picking up from the Book of the Month Club, I thought I could get Eliza to introduce the Susan Cooper books or children's books in general, (other posters available?) then ask Silver Jenny to introduce William Horwood's Willows in Winter sequence in December as a complement to the Wind in the Willows Thread in December. What do you think?
Cooeee!! Is there anybody there?
Sounds good to me, Rwth. I missed out on a lot of children's books when I was young, so shall get cracking on reading some Susan Coopers.
Please would you pop into the Book of the Month Rota thread (message 92) and let me know what you decide. Thanks.
Rusty
V. flattered, Rwth, although I suspect I'd be a bit rubbish at it. It's far enough away for me to say a blithe yes now and then completely forget and then panic like mad, but - yeah, go on then.
I'll have to dig out my Susan Coopers but then I've been meaning to for ages anyway.
I do suspect that there are many posters better qualified than me to discuss them but then again that might make for a nice lively thread with plenty of opportunities for people to come in and say, "What absolute tosh in the OP".

All you need is to love the books and maybe give an educator's slant on them, though they are a bit difficult for your tinies.
All you need to do is to remember to head your new discussion (in the Village Hall) "Book Club November - The Dark is Rising." Then post the link to it in here. You do it on 1 November and stand back and see what happens. Often nothing at all, and you think Nobody cares, but we do, and I will respond even if nobody else does.
I'm going out again with my butterfly net to get Silver Jenny. Mwahahahaha!
Eliza

Not so, not so. I love your posts, they indicate an entertaining and thoughtful person with a great sense of humour. And if I have been persuaded to start a discussion in the Book of the Month Club, I don't see why you should get away with it.....go on, go for it.

Silver Jenny, If you still like William Horwood, would you like to introduce the "Willows in Winter sequence" in December please? I'll do it if you don't want to, but I don't want to take it all over, and your insight would be fascinating. If you'd like to do him as an author and do all his books, that would be just as good.

Hello. I've begun one.
We are really stuck for a topic for May everyone. Would anyone like to volunteer an author or genre for May? It only needs an introduction under Authors and Genres - May (your topic) and an introduction to get people talking about it.
If you can quote the reference for this thread in your post, and the reference for the new thread in here, that would be really helpful.

Oh Frabjous day SilverJenny! Please do. I feel a rotten so and so for pressganging you, but I do know you like me are also an aficionado. If you will, just do it your way, and we'll fit in. If we keep it broadbased, we might also get in the compleat works, though starting with the Willows series.
Herb Robert I hope you do mean this offer is for May. I can think of a few that are well worth reading, so I'm looking forward to it.
I'm sorry, I started that April thread in The Bull by mistake, so if Tayler is reading this, can you pretty please shift it over to the Village Hall.

We start on the first of the month, and the book of the month starts on 21 of the month.
I still haven't contacted Tayler yet, must do that before going to bed.
Rwth, would it be easier if you just started a new April discussion thread on literature for girls pre 1940 (was that it?) here in TVH and then posted a flyer for it TB? Then the TB thread could just be left to sink down the Mayo.

May - Literature in Translation, thanks Herb Robert
June - Poetry of Rage - Rwth
July - Dystopian Novels - Rusters
August
September
October
November - Susan Cooper series - Eliza Bennett
December - William Horwood and "The Willows in Winter"and other tales - Silver Jenny
We do seem to need someone to do August, September and October. I'll do one of them, but have no idea what. How about the Bryant and May Detective series? and please feel free to add to Literature in Translation or any of the others if anything occurs to you. It doesn't have to be great literature. Someone might like to do Gardening books I have loved, or include cookbooks I have loved. Or good technical manuals. Then there is Zane Grey and other Western/American Novels. Of course I'm not desperate, just suggesting ideas for the first of the month. See what you think.

Watch this space for Dystopian Novels, introduced by Rusters. I'm looking forward to it because I haven't a clue what to expect. So whatever it turns out to be, it's bound to be wonderful.
I haven't forgotten, Rwth. My internet connection has been a bit iffy over the last week or so, and Virgin is coming tomorrow to sort it out (well, I hope they manage to straight away, anyway).
If I don't manage to start the discussion tomorrow, then definitely on Friday.

I was right. Dystopian novels was and is wonderful. Very enlightening, and filled with poignant reminiscences. I remember sitting on the bus to work and back for weeks reading "Nineteen eighty four".
I have to make some decisions here. Because we have no-one for August, it will have to be me, and I shall unashamedly plump for the Pern novels of Anne and Todd McCaffrey. So future months will be : suggested.
August - Pern novels
September - Women detectives - a volunteer please. You can change the topic if you want
October - The success or failure of series of novels - another volunteer, again change it if you want to do something else.
November - Susan Cooper series - Eliza Bennett
December - William Horwood and "The Willows in Winter"and other tales - Silver Jenny>
Can I have some suggestions for next year's genres please. Offers too, but you don't have to offer to do all your suggestions, in fact, it would be good to volunteer to do someone else's suggestions, and suggest ideas for people who have volunteered. But if you want to suggest and volunteer, please feel free.

Thanks Rusters. I'll add it to the list when I have a few more to add if it's all right with you. I'd like someone to do a thread on Ripping yarn writers, to include anyone who writes something that could be construed as one. The broader the church the better. Should we also do one on technical books too, It could be fun comparing Nigel Slater with say Julian Wilson on posh cars.
All ideas welcome.

August - Pern novels by Anne McCaffrey and the later ones by her and her son, collaborating.
September - Women detectives - a volunteer please. You can change the topic if you want
October - The success or failure of series of novels - Tingle factor, not wanting to put it down, not wanting to finish, wanting to cast them aside and why?
