Welcome to the ML Cat Club, the place to chat about cats, exchange information, seek and share advice and support about all things cat related. There鈥檚 a huge range of experience here, and whatever the query, we usually manage to come up with some suggestions.

But please note, one of the most frequently posted pieces of advice is, 鈥楾ake your cat to the vet鈥. None of us claim to be veterinary experts, and no vet would diagnose a problem via a message board. So if you鈥檙e really worried about your cat鈥檚 health, please get him/her to your vet asap, and maybe come on here afterwards for advice and support on treatment. But if you鈥檙e not too sure whether it鈥檚 urgent or not, feel free to ask for an opinion. Most regular cat clubbers are here, dipping in and out, 24/7, so you shouldn鈥檛 have to wait long for a response.

    Other threads you might want to visit;

    Feral/Stray Cats: F2693944?thread=6216800

Good Food for Cats no. 1: F2693944?thread=3538824
and the current one, no. 2: F2693944?thread=6733162

Pucci's Feline Diabetes: F2693944?thread=3603152&skip=0&show=20 This thread is now closed and for reference only. It is a wonderful resource for those with diabetic cats.

Cats should look here: 鈥楥ats lounging around鈥 鈥 a place for cats to have their own fun, without their slaves cramping their style.

And another, which we frequently point people to, is Bash鈥檚 introduction protocol, a really good way of introducing a new cat into a household of existing cats 鈥 well worth a read, and it (eventually) worked for me, so I can highly recommend it. F2693944?thread=5624542&skip=357&show=1

And a link to the cat club rota, because we can always do with more volunteers to open a new thread

So, before people nod off with boredom because I鈥檝e gone on too long, I plan to do another post with links to external sites, not ML ones, which may be of interest to people.

Some of you may know that I shouldn鈥檛 be opening this month鈥檚 thread. Our much loved greenjewel was supposed to be doing it, but tragically she鈥檚 left us. I know we will all miss her posts, her warmth, humour, common sense and incredibly wide knowledge of cats. I think she would say that we have to get on with looking after cats, and that鈥檚 why we started this club. So let鈥檚 honour her memory by doing just that.

    Roots xx

Roots, Thank you very much for opening up the March Cat Club in place of our much missed greenjewel.

In case there is anyone here who would like to make a donation to a cause that was dear to gj鈥檚 heart, but hasn鈥檛 yet done so, please see details in Message 1 in Amy Bridge鈥檚 thread in TB, entitled 鈥淒onations in memory of greenjewel鈥:

As Roots said, let鈥檚 honour gj鈥檚 memory by getting on and talking about cats and cat care.

I have had to zip off for a day or two at a time over the last few weeks, leaving the cats in OH鈥檚 hands. I am happy to report that all nine cats have been fine in my absence, though Stripe managed to convince OH that she *always* has battered fish from the fish and chip shop for lunch every day. Sigh.

    Love to all.

Roots, those links didn't take when I copied them from the month before last either - the difference is that *I* didn't even notice until days later(excl mark).

They are obviously the pesky kind of links that one has to take direct form the website, rather than copy them from previous ML posts. Anyway, I do actually have these particular ones bookmarked somehwere, as they are so useful. Here they are:

Thank you for opening up Roots, beautifully said.

A lovely spring morning here after all the gales and weather. I shall let our two out shortly, after giving the birds a fair chance at waking up and getting themselves fed.

Milli sneezed a few times yesterday so I shall keep an eye on her. At the moment she's bouncing around happily, but I do worry, she's had such bad luck. Poor little sweetie.

Holding in my thoughts all the cats who need extra strong healing vibes, the catty rosary again Bash, and sending gentle furfles to all.

Just adding my last post in Feb CC about the Bengal, just in case:

OK, the link I've been looking at is

That's the only one I can find but someone else might be able to find another one?

Hedge used to spray all over the stable but he's stopped now, despite not being neutered. I think Crouton being around, and unneutered for a while, stressed him out and once Crouton was done, Hedge settled back down again.

That is the right link, BTW, I checked earlier.

It's possible he might have found a home as a yard cat, and it sounds like that might suit a Bengal - loads of places to climb and be active. They do sound quite different to the cats I've had and although I would love to have one, it's not feasible at the moment. From what I've been told, nothing was done to help with the cat's stress - he has just been returned to the rescue whenever he's started spraying with someone. Fingers crossed he will be sorted soon, anyway.

I'm leaving off taking Hedge to the vets at the moment as I have a stinking cold again and don't think it's fair on the surgery staff to go and pass it on to them. Hedge is fine in himself, eating well but not constantly starving like he was when I first started feeding him, so I will make arrangements to take him in at the weekend, once I've spoken to my vet. At the moment I can't speak anyway, so I'm not going to get very far unless I write everything down. Courtesy of two cats sleeping on my chest all night I couldn't breathe all night, either.

It is a beautiful morning here, Ellis has just gone out to check the birds are all OK and the rest are fast asleep in various sunbeams. I feed the birds where Ellis can't reach them and where they can see him approaching anyway, so he'll be back in a few minutes when he realises he can't get them.

Have put a few more pics of Buffy up. She really loves the scratching post but as someone predicted this has not stopped her re-decorating our hall, she is now working her way down another wall. Think I will just put on a lick of paint until she gets it out of her system, than we can deal with it properly.

And I hate to tell you, but she won't get it out of her system. SO difficult to stop these habits once they get started, as I know to my cost. The current cost here is a beautiful Knole sofa which is now fringed in places where it shouldn't have been fringed.

Oh sorry Archie. Really I am, didn't mean to make you despair.

There are ways of teaching them not to, of course, and it is hard work, but then, you'd expect nothing less with a cat.

We taught our cats not to scratch (back in the UK - different cats) by shutting them out of the living room as soon as the scratching started. That cured them because they hated missing out on stuff. They used to camp outside the door looking miserable, and after fifteen minutes or so we'd let them in again. It took a month or so. Maybe less. But then we weren't in all day, we were out at work, and they weren't allowed in the living room when we were out of the house.

Some people recommend a spray of water when they do the unacceptable behaviour. I'm too soft for that, I'd hate to spray them, and I rather think they'd end up not trusting me rather than not scratching the furniture/paper or whatever.

Maybe someone else can offer some positive help here.....

Milly and Des are well and happy and Des has a new mate; a rather handsome white-and-black chap who has suddenly appeared in our little street. We are keeping an eye out in case he's a stray although he seems well-fed and is in excellent condition, so he's most likely just moved into the area with his humans.

Lovely pics, Archie. Geting regular bulletins on Jasper. Still eating well and asking for strokes and cuddles - strictly not allowed, of course. 22 days to go. The upside is that nervous Tilly is spending more time downstairs including deciding she is now a lap cat, which is lovely. Not sure about the reunion on 23 March from her point of view if she continues to gain in confidence.

Lovely photos Archie. Sweet Buffy. Pippa (RIP)looks like one of my ferals, Thea. Aw...

    Love to darling Jasper.

Oi vey. Just read a pamphlet on the fridge in the apt where I'm cat-sitting a feral (details in feral thread) and one overweight and one obese cat.

Huuuuge bowls of dry food left out (which I've fixed), cleaned the filthy eating area with dried splashes of wet food on the wall, crumbs and dust and hair on a cotton mat and this is one of the things this otherwise ok leaflet says:

'Take the ho-hum out of your cat's commercial dry food by adding a splash of tuna juice or salt-free chicken broth to the bowl. After this saucy feast, your feline may spend extra time savouring these extras during her special post-meal grooming sessins because of the lingering aromas from these feline 'au-jus' toppings."

What the hell are they on about? This is the kind of clap trap that leads to all kinds of trouble, not least putrefying dry food gone soggy.

From a book called 'Happy Cat, Happy You' by Arden Moore. My arse.

    We'll show 'em.

Arden Moore: just looked him up. What can one say? Well, what can one say without the risk of being modded, anyway.

You've said before that Diane doesn't listen to anything anyone says. Well, as if more proof was needed............. I mean, the whole food thing: the mounds of dry, WETTING it, let alone with whatever is in the au-jus toppings, the filthy feeding area. Poor cats. Overweight and obese, respectively, eh? A disaster waiting to happen.

Actually, would love to know what *Arden* *Moore* means by "ho-hum" dry food. Ho-hum indeed.

"Unhappy Cat, Happy [Bad] Vets" would seem to be a better title.

PLP, sorry you have been ill but I am glad Sheba has been an attentive companion. There's nothing like a cat on the bed when you aren't well ime. What a darling Sheba is.

Ali, fingers crossed that Milli's sneezing was just One of Those Things, but I can so identify with one's antennae going up when a cat has had troubles in the past. Still, she is young, summer is a-coming, so hope she is really okay.

Is she still on those meds for her skin ? I do remember your vet was decreasing the dose last year, but can't remember if that was for Jones or Milli, or both.

AelM, sad to see on that site that they cannot take any more Bengals in. If they are anything in character like, say, Siamese they need lots of human attention as well as space and exercise. As long as that particular boy as a yard cat has people around it sounds like a good placement.

Sorry you are another one who is ill. Sounds like what my sister has - she has slept half-upright on the sofa for the last couple of weeks, as if in bed she slips down in her sleep and wakes up gasping for breath. Don't blame you for leaving Hedge for the moment. He sounds as if he is doing okay, just something to keep in mind for when you are better.

Thank you for the new pics of Buffy, Archie. She obviously likes her new scratch post, even if it shares her attentions with the wall. Your poor wallpaper - same with one part of our bedroom wallpaper *behind* the Fat Boy scratcher. Paint next time, methinks.

If you find a ploy that works, pleease let us know.

Eliza, doesn't Milly seem to mind this new little cat? I hope it isn't a stray dump, but if it is and een she doesn't mind it.......... well, it would be nice for Des to have a mate, one who looks up to him as a rescuing hero and....... whoops, getting carried away here.

Jo and stp, I have your email addresses and will contact you re The Book if that is okay. Only just getting to grips after a pretty miserable and stressful few weeks on all fronts (except cats, thank heavens), but things getting sorted now.

Darling Jasper, stp. Not all that long now. Would be wonderful if the break away will help the cats' relationship.

The thought of pouring stuff over dry food...pointless and revolting. Also revolting and pointless. If a cat's ho-humming over it, give 'em decent wet food. Sorted.

    Anyway.

Milly hasn't met him as far as we're aware; she really doesn't go out much. She'd happily be an indoors-only cat, I suspect. But Des goes out more and they have been seen on the garage roof together. The new cat followed Des halfway up the garden the other day when Des was called in for tea; then thought better of it.

I think Hedge is starting to feel his age a bit, and perhaps a long winter with little chance to sit and enjoy the sun too. Him and Crouton have been outside sunning themselves a bit this afternoon for a change. Trouble has been nowhere to be seen apart from at feeding time so I think the rodents might be out and about a bit more now. I wish she'd catch rats as well....

I'm hoping this cold goes quickly, it's just a drag as it took me so long to get over the last one. Still, it's an excuse not to go to work for a couple of days.

No further news about the Bengal yet, but fingers crossed for him. It sounds like he'd be going to a yard where he's get human contact a lot too if he does go to the one who has offered to take him in.

Only another 22 days before Jasper is home? It doesn't sound as bad put like that, the first week seems to have gone really quickly. Here's hoping the next 22 days fly past for you, stp.

Poor Jasper, desperate for cuddles. Won't be long before he'll be cuddled to his little heart's content, though...

Um, I have a feeling I already know the answer to this, but does the combined wisdom of the Cat Club think it is possible we're under-feeding Doofus? I only ask because he has been very greedy recently. He nicked a sausage from the Toad-in-the-Hole last week, and yesterday he managed to get at the roast chicken that TomCat had put on a plate under a mixing bowl, wedged at the back of the kitchen counter, to cool before it went in the fridge. He knocked the whole lot off the worktop and scoffed one of the chicken legs (TomCat had been saving it for curry, he rinsed it off and kept it and hasn't told TomKitten). Also the other month he raided the bin and licked the empty Whiskas pouches clean.

They get fed the same, 3 pouches a day Whiskas Oh So Fishy between them, and some dried food as well. Doofus normally hoovers his grub up and then looms over Little Cat while she's finishing hers (she is a more delicate eater) and often muscles her out of the way and eats what is left in her dish. He's about 4.5kg, down from about 4.7-4.8 but he's a mediumly big cat, not a bruiser. The vet said he was in good shape when he saw him in December. But we try to keep their food down because Little Cat can get overweight easily due to her steroids (asthma).

Not sure if maybe we should feed Doofus a little more, and he'd stop a) chasing Little Cat off her grub and b) scavenging human food! Or are most cats naturally greedy? (I suspect that's it)

None of ours are particularly greedy, they just sort of eat a bit then wander off - even the yard cats sometimes. The Oh So pouches are only 85g, aren't they? So 3 of them would be the equivalent of 2.5 Felix/Whiskas normal sized pouches but then again, it's a higher quality food.

Long winded way of saying I haven't a clue, I'm afraid. But did snork at the idea of washing the chicken off and not telling TomKitten smiley - smiley I think I'd consider giving him perhaps half a pouch more if that will keep him quiet while Little Cat finishes hers?

Ooh Cat, very interesting and very important issue. I would certainly consider the poss that I'm underfeeding someone by being careful with the waistline of another.

You see....there goes a great cat servant. Second guessing is our best friend sometimes.

I feed all my guys the same in theory (depending on each cat's mood, the day of the week, who's been beaten up that day and what food I'm serving)but you wouldn't know it looking at Henry and Angel sitting together.(Sorry Milo). Henry is perfect (God, please don't let him read that)and Angel is a bit tubby, because she mine-sweeps everone's plates given half a chance but I don't give her a quarter of a chance these days; I really oversee feeding time.

I'm sure Henry's tough beginnings have something to do with the way he burns his off. I really should ask Dr Young. He can eat for AMerica and still stay slender.

Anyway, back to Doofs. Valentine's voracious appetite and weight loss alerted me to his hyper thyroidism, so that aside, I would say some cats just need more than others and I could easily underfeed say Grilly if I didn't watch over her and stop the hooligans (Henry and Soames) hovering around Grilly Island.

Cat, I would say that after a meal they should be satisfied and not constantly begging for more, within reason, and giving slightly different amounts to each is ok as long as noone is doing without or getting too much for the sake of them all getting the same.

Does it stand to reason that cats have different metabolisms because humans do?

Cat, I'd say 1 1/2 pouches is a bit light for a 4.5kg cat. I tend to feed mine 2 pouches of Nature's Menu per day to my 'normal' sized cats (all 4-5kg) and perhaps a little less to Susie (barely 3kg) but these sachets are 100g I think. I would normally feed 3 per day of something like Oh So and do that to the little semi-ferals who live outside.

Of course, if he is suddenly extra-hungry, there's always the outside possibility of thyroid problems, that was one of the first symptoms in Herbie, plus weight loss. But I think Doofus is still very young so unlikely?

Mine gets about 3 pouches 'oh so meaty' or equivalent - she is on the smallish side and stays inside during the day - she eats what she wants and often leaves some over and doesn't tend to overeat.

Came home from work this afternoon, and I was accosted by a Lady en-rote betwixt carpark and home, with a Cat Carrier on a pushchair. Contents of Carrier = one small all-black cat. Walking beside her, with the aid of two walking sticks was a much older man (Grandfather? Neighbour?). The woman I have seen around, so is probably a "not-immediate" neighbour. The invalid elder I have never seen before.

Two things struck me: Firstly that she realized that I'm a softy to cats, and would be intersted (Rocky died 2003, so She's never seen a cat here). Secondly was the Elderly Gents keen-ness to be present at the Vets examination. It couldn't have been an easy task for him to walk to carpark/taxi pick-up (Pedestrian Estate). Cat had been receiving Thyroid treatment.

thanks folks - have just discussed with TomCat and told him to give Doofus a bit more. he already feeds him more than Little Cat but I said to feed him even more more, if you see what I mean. He really should be a bit more than 4.4kg. he's not 3 yet and I'm sure there's nothing wrong with him, I've had a hyperthyroid cat before (Ancient Cat, RIP) so am used to the signs of that.

GLO, lovely anecdote about the woman, very old man & cat. Hope Puss was OK

Oh, how I wish I could get away with 3 pouches between two of my yard cats. I will hold my hand up to Crouton being too fat, but between the 3 of them they are /down to/ 10 pouches a day. Although I have a feeling a rat, some cockerels and next door's hugely fat ginger cat are helping....

Baldrick is looking miffed because I'm at home and haven't gone back to bed (or gone outside to play with him) - a day off sick today for me as I have lost my voice now. Not good - well, I suppose that's a matter of opinion. OH might disagree with it not being good, for a start.

10 pouches between 3 sounds fine AelM, especially if they don't get any dry.

Hope you're feeling better soon, I had 2 days off sick last week and I didn't have any cats to help me recuperate. I'm sure Baldrick will help you feel better (or maybe not...)

Thanks for opening the March CC thread.

I'd like to share some of my photos of Marmalade and Mischief on this thread but I'm not that sure
if the mods would allow it. I took all of the photos with my camera

Humans have navicular bones? I thought that was just horses?

LaRA, sympathy from me, too. I can only imagine how painful and difficult that is.

Cat, one of the yard cats gets a handful of dry as she'll sometimes refuse to touch the pouches (then I'll go back a bit later and watch over the door as she eats the food she swore blind she hated....) but I suppose 10 pouches isn't really that bad between them. I've cut them back from 12+ but then that was in the worst of winter and they're not inside so need the extra food to keep warm. That's what they tell me, anyway.

Baldrick has been a great "comfort" today, he's finally pushed me out of bed so I'm starting to get myself sorted to go and do the horses. How can one smallish cat take over an entire bed? The rest of the cats are still comatose - I suppose this is their usual weekday routine and they're just enjoying having a human to curl up with for a change.

LaReine, sympathy on your broken bone. That sounds awkward & I hope that you can manage to hop or hobble as required. Do look after yourself &(whisper)don't let the felines bully you.
