I'm looking for a suitable non-toxic, environmentally-friendly product with which to treat the internal floors of our rabbit hutch and something similar to treat the outside of the hutch and make it rain-proof. I've looked at most of the mainstream manufacturers' products but I'm not convinced they're as pet-safe as they claim. Does anyone have any knowledge and experience if using Ecos or OSMO paints/varnishes etc.?

Hog - Though I don't keep them anymore, I used to breed rabbits for exhibition, so have some knowledge of the subject.

In answer to your query. If your rabbit's hutch has been rain proofed by covering the roof with bitumen based felt, the inside will be dry and therefore it isn't normally necessary to treat the wood with anything.
If you really are committed to treating it, the there is a product called 'Good for Wood' that will be suitable.

Any water based exterior wood preserve will be okay for the outside.

Snap, David. I was just surfing and came across this site, which means Good for Wood:

Hog, I don't know much about rabbits, but one of the nurses at my vet surgery is their resident bunny expert and is also involved in rabbit rescue. Since chatting to her, I have learned that rabbits are interesting and complex creatures, and their care not that straightforward either. I'd now love a couple of rescue rabbits, but am not sure how they would feel about the cats, or vice versa.

I inherited a couple of rabbits and a guineau pig at the same time as I inherited Rocky-the-dog.

The roof for the cage was properly waterproof but one part of the base started to rot because that was their toilet area.

I then learned that trays can be used and even though it is blindingly obvious I'd never thought of it. Made the weekly clean-out much simpler as well.

BTW, I managed to pass on the rabbits and guineau pig after six months, Rocky-the-dog is here to stay.
