I have what I think is a ganglion cyst on the inside of my wrist below the palm of my hand, towards the thumb .

It's been growing for a while with no ill effects until quite recently. Now it's causing me pain and preventing full movement of my thumb. I'm reluctant to go to the doctor with this unless it's absolutely necessary as I have been there too much lately.

Has anybody any experience of this?

Aren't these what used to known as Bible Bumps? In other words, a deft wallop with the heavy old family bible would sort them out (at least temporarily)."

    Here is more useful information

I realise that you are having a bad time at the moment, but I would have thought it unwise to put off going to the doctor with a clear physical ailment. You do not need more problems to worry about, so why not see if this can be fixed relatively easily.

Susie, I agree with Dunlurkin. I don't want to alarm you, but OH had a bump which turned out to be something nasty. The quicker you can check this out the better - It will probably just be a harmless ganglion, but if it were something else, you would then have it treated in good time.

    Get it checked out Susie.

A friend of mine had one of these removed by her GP in about 15 mins.

He holds a minor surgery morning.

I took her in case she wouldn't be fit to drive home, but she was fine and could easily have driven herself.

Both my husband and I have had these. His was removed in a very minor outpatient operation. Mine had disappeared when the cast was removed from my arm after breaking it.
A friend is wearing tight strapping to have the same effect.
    Good luck.

Sususie, I searched back for 15 mins for this thread, havng recently spring-cleaned my discussions.
    I's called "I have a ganglion"

I had it aspirated, persuaded the surgeon to do it there and then, but it's returned (he said there was a 50% chance of it doing so, but I've got his card to call his secretary if I want to have it surgically removed (Day patient, but general reqd because of where it is)

It isn't giving me much trouble now, but if it gets pressured again I'll have it removed.

(Been trying to post this for ages but kept getting 'server too busy')

    Thanks everyone.

I don't fancy the bible bash, so it looks like a trip to the doctors. (Don't fancy that much, but it seems to be the lesser of two evils)

I can't see there's much point in draining them as this still leaves the cyst capsule in place so they come back frequently. Also. a google search has found plenty of evidence that it's difficult to aspirate them if they have started to become hard (which mine has). Apparently the fluid within them becomes too viscous to pass through a needle.

The best bet seems to be surgical removal, which has a lower rate of recurrence. I just wondered if anybody had experience of this.

No personal experience, but as I said upthread, I have a friend who had hers removed, in her doctors surgery, in 15 minutes.

She wandered in and wandered out. Quite painless she said, and her doctor made her laugh by telling her how much he likes doing the procedure and popping the ganglion out out like a big pea from a pod.

That was some time ago and there's no sign of it returning again.

Susie, my husband has one in the same place as you describe. His is big and hard most of the time, then it goes small and soft (ooh-er missus!).

The specialist advised against removing it as, because of where it is, there's a high risk of damage to important nerves and blood vessels.

As yours is causing you problems, I'd see a doc as soon as possible. Good luck!

I have had two removed, both under local anaesthetic. Neither has returned. Very minor surgery, and worth doing if it is in an annoying place (both mine were on my palm at the base of a finger and so stopped me from gripping).

Supposedly that's how one of my brothers sorted his one out many years ago. It never came back. I've had one on my wrist for 20-30 years, perhaps one day I'll check it out with the doctor, it'll be worth it for the peace of mind. Some time in the next five to ten years I'll book an appointment.
