Welcome to a new week, and indeed a new month for the MFC. For some of us this will be a new start to our healthy campaign, for some a continuation of a long term goal. For some dipping a toe in here, it may be the inspiration needed to get started. Most of us here are interested in losing weight, and some in maintaining having lost already.

There are few rules, and we are a very friendly bunch. Please, however, do not post any real life weights or measurements. It can be dispiriting to think that someone feels very overweight at a size that some of us can only dream of!

There is advice on most aspects of weight loss and healthy living here - whether following a diet club such as Weight Watchers or Slimming World or a diet to help a particular medical condition.

    Our sister threads are:

Katy's cookbook - for recipes and advice on cooking them:

The cybergym, for all things exercise related:

and finally the important rota thread - where anyone can sign up to open up for the week:

A motto for the week -

    Aim for progress, not perfection.

KOKO (keep on keeping on) all of you.

    Pug

Thanks for bumping it up PP - I was just coming back from last week to do that. I am needing a boot in the rear to get me back on track. I am determined not to get to my big birthday still in this shape. I have found it far too easy to slip back to the bad old ways.

Here is to a good week to all.

Eeeek! only a couple of weeks to go for me and that tum is still sitting on my lap!

Another lunch out tomorrow, so not much hope for me there. The hostess is a terrific cook ... including home-made ice-creams.

Thanks for opening up, Pug. Must remember it's my turn next week!

Trundling on as usual. Had meal out yesterday - very nice, reasonably well planned from my point of view, quite expensive but worth it!

Off swimming now to make up for lack of Bank Holiday exercise, though I did manage to get a bit of very leisurely walking in. Don't think it qualified as exercise as I was going at my aged parent's pace...

Thanks for opening Pug, another here who hopes to aim for progress. I'm feeling very disconsolate - I only lost 1 lb in May. I am still 1 lb off losing 3 stone and 2 lb off a new starting figure. Having started at Z stone 1 lb in March last year, I sped downwards through the Y stone mark, slightly slower though the next stone, the Xs. I have crawled down through W stone and am still W stone 2 lb. Will someone come and give me a big push to step down off this plateau!!

Glad you enjoyed your meal out Lost, and that it was as planned.

I don't have a big birthday this year - but we do have a big anniversary in August - I cut up my wedding dress years ago to make angel tops for my god-daughter and my Piglets, no way could I have got into it now!

Morning all, I'm a bit up again this morning but only half a lb and the Bank Holiday involved some unexpected indulgences as well as Lots of diggercize so I don't mind at all and I feel good. We went to the pub for tea last night after a full day of hard digging and on my suggestion we walked up. Puzzlerette decided she didn't want to walk so I carried her (16.5kg) up the hill on my shoulders. I'm sure that helped to counteract the chips!

I know lots of people have given up on weighing but it's not for me. Once a week keeps me more focussed, and I've started a lovely new graph having not done one since the Autumn when I got my laptop. I'm sure Mr Puzzler and I will find it helpful to see the overall downward trend, which Will be obvious in a couple of weeks' time.

    KOKO everyone,
    Puzzler

Good Morning, and well done on all the stiffening resolve.

In to report a further 1 lb 6 oz loss, bringing me down to Y stone 11 lb exactly. I'm getting used to going to bed without indigestion and waking up hungry and am liking both of those as indicators that the changes I've made are good for my health. Just had a banananana for breakfast, still a bit peckish so I'm going to get my shower and see how I feel after that.

    Have a good day all.

mornin' all, thanks for opening, Pug. The Eye shall be upon thee, if you like.

Well, I cracked and weighed at the weekend as everything felt a lot looser and I was 2.5 lbs off! No nearer to understanding why, but just pleased.

FP - look how far you've come as well as how far you want to go. That is a tremendous achievement. The plateau bit is always the most frustrating but maintaining that level is also not to be sneezed at, as I know to my cost!

Not too bad a weekend food & drinks wise. APs came over so I baked some choc chip muffins, but so far have only had one half one, so I reckon that's permissible in the grand scheme of things.

to everyone else & here's to a healthy & happy week

Puzzler, to weigh or not to weigh is such a personal decision ... I found (having got to the weight I had decided was right for me) that weighing just opened up old issues for me, so I have stopped, apart from perhaps once a month. You will remember that I too was using the scales as encouragement for a long time and quite understand that you find it helpful. That's the joy of this thread, we all do our own thing. Well done you :0)

Fire-Pig, it's tough when you plateau and things seem to grind to a halt; it's particularly difficult when you've seen weight loss so you know how good it feels to make progress so that not making progress feels frustrating.

I would echo the advice to look at how far you've come all that X, Y, Z stuff just goes to show how far you /have/ already come. It also proves you can continue to do it if you keep persisting. It's the doing-what-is-right-even-when-scales-don't-affirm-those-decisions-just-yet stage which is excrutiatingly difficult, I've found, and when it's all too easy to give up.

The Eye is on you, urging you on, cheering you to keep going!

Swings and Roundabouts to report here!

On the down-side, I'm distinctly too big for quite a few clothes bought, or brought back into use, since late summer. I'm not as big as I was in early summer, but distinctly heftier than I was smiley - sadface

On the up-side, I'm getting the portion-control back. I don't feel 'deprived' now at not having chocolate every evening. I stood and drooled pitifully at the Dairy Milk in Waitrose the other day and then went and got some very nice radishes, which surprised me!! I feel more active, more organised and less like a personification of Sloth and Greed combined smiley - smiley

I have an incentive I didn't expect - not so much that I don't want to feel cut into by clothes, or that I want to look as good as I did, but that I am SOOOO aware now of my body's movements and don't like the current arrangement! My thighs have gained a bit and now I am aware when I walk that each leg has to swing outwards a fraction at each step to swing its way round the other thigh. I had got used to my legs just taking steps forwardly, and had forgotten this semi-circular-step waddling. Going up hill in a skirt or loose shorts, there is a moment at each step when my belly makes contact with the top of my thigh, which in hot sticky weather is particularly repulsing!

So I am looking at portions and asking myself: do I want an extra [whatever] more than I want my legs to move forwards rather than around-wards?

It's funny what the incentives can be! Different from last time, too... maybe because I had been so aware last August/ September of how freely my limbs moved with the loss of their overcoats of flab.

So... portion control and walking, walking, walking...

    KOKO everyone!

    Laura's radishes, startling her!

I have a huge saucepan (the base of a pressure cooker) full of what will be absolutely yummy pilchard curry. I know, it sounds ghastly, but it isn't. Beautiful with brown rice, or even with a jacket potato. Lovely mixed cold into salad, and lovely on its own!

Difficult to nail down which is the only way I used to view food ... if it's not nailed down, at certain times of the month I would eat it!!!!!

Phew - I've finally made it in here very late at night as I couldn't log in earlier - kept getting an error message or "server too busy". Still, I'm here at last.

Well it has been a good start to the week, with a healthy day of eating with no silly snacks sneaking in. I ate some melon at 6 ish after work whilst cooking tea (always a danger time for me). I haven't managed much in the way of exercise as I was working a lot today, and serving as taxi for the children as well. However, time for that later in the week.

As Primrose said earlier it is a relief not to feel too full, and indigestiony (new word, just made up by me), and waking up hungry. I even weighed out my muesli this morning as the portion size had been creeping up.

So, further progress to come, perfection being a long way away!

Nice to see so many "old" faces here again too.

I'm not quite sure what today will bring in the way of temptations. I am helping at a street stall in aid of our local mountain rescue team for much of the day - with a side trip of a cervical smear to add joy to a day off work! I expect to be on my feet most of the day, but spending time with friends as well.

After my wobbly start yesterday I did NOT go mad and overeat saying there was no point continuing etc. I didn't manage to get out for any exercise as I was in my office for 10 long hours. For various reasons this latest Bank Holiday weekend and the lead up to it have not been the easiest. Still on the bright side I only ate what I had planned to eat.

KOKO one and all - anyone want a second hand book just to help the Mountain Rescue Team?

Well done fellow food lovers :0))

Being reminded of portion control is helpful ... I spooned out four tablespoons of muesli this morning and realise my portion size has been creeeeping back up since getting home from Sicily. All those six weeks we measured it each morning partly because it had to last for the six weeks, but it is easy to slip back into thoughtless ways.

Morning all. I was very good yesterday evening. It was the first time in nearly 5 years that Mr Puzzler spent a night away from home without me (I spent 8 nights away from home without him earlier this year - 7 when Puzzlerette was in hospital).

I didn't drink the mini bottle of wine that I won in a raffle last week and I didn't spend the evening eating through boredom - instead I sorted out all the baby clothes that I've had back from my sister and packed them into vacuum bags in order of age. I should have drunk more water though. I often find if I get involved in doing a non-physical task that I forget to drink enough.

    KOKO everyone.

Sounds like people are generally doing okay, troddling along nicely smiley - smiley

As the winter layers come off, I'm more aware of my shape and that is a useful incentive. I was Tempted this morning by the Liquorice Allsort Devil* but I went and looked in a mirror and noted the thickening of my waist compared to last August and decided I could do without any, thanks all the same, O Generous Devil.

*you'd think I'd recoil away after breaking a tooth yesterday on one!

I've got out my smaller dishes again. Interesting how they haven't been used in recent months!! Some are nearly doll's-sized, but for me one thing that really works is putting together a meal in near-miniature. So supper this evening will be on a tray, and will perhaps be something like a little brown glazed pottery dish with five or six radishes, another with a small amount of cheese, a small plate with some mixed green leaf-salad with a little French dressing, some lean ham and some spring onions, and a slightly larger blue ceramic dish with a yoghourt mixed with seeds for pudding.

Somehow having multiple dishes all filled with food makes me think of it as a vast feast... I could fit all that onto one normal plate with some space to spare, but it seems to work having it as a dolls' tea-party! smiley - smiley

    Whatever works, whatever works...

I hope to have some slight loss to report soon. I'm still not as healthy in my choices as last summer, and not getting the walking up to full pitch yet, but I am getting there steadily.

    KOKO all!

ooh, Laura, sorry to hear you've broken a tooth. How horrid for you. I can't bear liquorice so can't empathise with that one, but definite sympathies on the dental front!

I have a success to report in that we resisted the Takeaway Pixie yesterday evening and had sossidge pasta (wholemeal pasta) instead. A much healthier option, so we felt v virtuous.

mini-dishes are why I love tapas & meze so much. I really love grazing over a range of little dishes than looking at an enormous plateful of one thing.

Afternoon all. I thought I'd pop in whilst I can still get logged on!

Another good start - portion control of muesli, glass of OJ for breakfast, then only cups of tea till lunch half an hour ago. I've had home made smoked mackerel pate with crispbread (and an oatcake) for lunch, with a pint of water.

I'm just off out to walk the dogs - hopefully for an hour or so briskly. Tonight's tea is baked potatoes with beans and cheese, or cheese and coleslaw. I grate the cheese really finely and find I eat less of it then, and use strong cheddar too.

Tomorrow I am out shopping with a couple of friends, one of whom is splittting up with her husband of many years after his infidelity, so she needs cheering up. We are planning on sushi for lunch though, so should be reasonably healthy (I won't mention the glass of wine we will probably have though!)

I've had a good day in many ways - I did not buy any of the delicious looking home-made cakes on sale, I had a lunch of a small ham salad, as far as I could tell the smear test went well (I have a history of their not taking enough cells) and the best I have just counted our takings at £375.*

Now to go home, lamb chops, Jersey royals and broccolli call!

*For part of the day we had a mountain rescue ambulance by our stall. The chap with it had been out on Sunday night returning home at 1.30am. They were called out again at 04.30, searched in vain only to find the man who had raised the alarm, for himself, had got down safely and was tucked up in his sleeping bag in his tent!!! Yesterday, we visited daughter and 3 week old grandson - we chose a day when the 3 year old is at nursery so we could have a good uninterrupted go with the little chap : )

We took lunch for daughter - as she is run down (has succombed to a couple of infections etc) and needs a bit of cosetting. So yesterday (the level of luxury not typical!)

Breakfast: Alara muesli mixed into Total 0% fat Greek Yoghurt with some sliced banananan, strawberries and blueberris. tomato juice, yerba mate tea.

Green tea with mint at "coffee time"

Lunch: cold salmon with asparagus and half a wholemeal roll and a little butter. Mixture of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and cherries with cream. one oatcake and several very small pieces of scrumptious cheese. No added sugar elderflower cordial.

Green tea before we went home

Cup of chocolate flake (Tea Pigs) tea when we got home.

Leftovers heated up of a very tasty Claudia Roden recipe (lamb, apricots, dates tagine) with quinoa. Mullerlite cherry yoghurt. Glass of wine.

    Chamomile tea at bedtime

Portion control strictly enforced at all meals.

I really couldn't have eaten them ... but I could have nibbled the wrapped flapjack that DD bought from a shelf. But I always have nibbles in my bag, so I was sorted. DD and I shared apricots as we waited for her appointment. An hour overtime and then we had to wait well over an hour at the pharmacy! They give you a prescription that can only be used at the hospital pharmacy! Luckily we had parked down the hill from the hospital so didn't get stung with car parking charges.

Oh dear. I did a bit of gardening at DoM's this morning which made us late to go to the stoopermarket (she can't cope on her own anymore). I remarked that I was feeling a bit peckish so she insisted on taking me out to a café for lunch. I had a very nice panini with tuna mayo, cheese and red onion, small coleslaw and salad on the side, regular coffee.

Yesterday at the Day Centre I had a huge portion of vegetable hot-pot with honey roasted parsnips, carrots, cauliflower cheese and a dollop of mashed potatoes - totally OTT.

The day before that I was invited to a committee celebratory lunch and had cucumber soup with croutons (+ one piece of french bread), a portion each of cheese topped fish-pie, aubergine and sun-dried tomato quiche, the most oo-ey and delicious cheese strudel, carrot salad, green salad. Dessert: filo pastry apple and marzipan pie (all the above home-made), grapes, strawberries, coffee and chocolate-coated coffee beans.

All this after Sunday's posh restaurant party. I don't understand why the scales haven't budged. It will all catch up with me in a day or two, I'm sure.

I should have headed this post up with a warning that just reading it could add 5,000 calories to your intake.

Mmmm, Archi - sounds lovely food and not actually too bad if you look at it carefully.

I've had my day out with friends, and it was lovely. We did some therapeutic shopping, and had lunch at a lovely wine bar - I had duck egg and asparagus salad, a glass of wine and a portion of chips shared between three of us, which meant about 6 each I guess. It was delicious, and more importantly my friend who is separating from her husband of 25 years had a chance to talk to us.

A good day with good friends. I've had chicken baked with a honey and lemon sauce tonight, and a couple of glasses of wine, as we are not working tonight.

I've not been as careful today as the previous few days, but nothing too terrible either, and I'm ready to restart in the morning again.

I bought some Fit Flops today, which puts me in mind of Geepers, as she I think got some last year. So far, so comfortable!

    KOKO.

    Pug x

Here's another who doesn't think you did too badly Archi - after all you haven't run away and hidden yourself in shame. You have thought about it and told us.

Pug, like you, I think it is important to remember that life goes on while we eat healthily. We have to maintain our contact with friends, which includes sharing food as well as time to talk. Your day sounds good. I'll have to google for FitFlops I can't remember what they are!

My banana is in my bag, and I'll be off to work soon.

    KOKO one and all,

    F-P

If anyone needed any convincing that exercise really can shift weight....

When I got my fave leathers out of the cupboard a few weeks ago they had inexplicably shrunk over the winter. They were so uncomfy I couldn't breathe - therefore no good on the bike. So I have doubled my running as well as running with my girls for the Race for Life and upped my weights by 2kg (3 times a week). Tried on the leathers this morning and they are very loose so I got on the scales. 7 weeks and I am 18lbs less than I was (no change to eating).

So for those of you stuck on a plateau or having trouble shifting it - stick with the exercise. It really does work

GEm, well done you, that sounds great. Am hoping to be upping the exercise in the garden over the weeekend even though this is mostly the equivalent of squats, I suppose, given the weeding & digging routine. But there will be brisk dog walking, too, which i can't do during the week.

Archi, I would agree that your list doesn't sound that bad - lots of veggies in there, by the sounds of it.

And wot FP said about life going on. A diet/eating plan which doesn't involve being able to enjoy food with friends without worrying is not one I'd like to follow at all. Glad you had a good time, Pug.

Wish I could report 18lbs loss in 7 weeks! I think mine is more like 6lbs in 7 weeks. I was quite content (well, fairly content... well, not grumbling too much) about that until I read your post, GEm!!

Mind you, when I see what you have done exercise-wise to shift that weight, I'm not surprised! I am on target to have done the most swimming in one week ever (gradually increasing distance because my speed is slowly increasing...!), but can't imagine /ever/ increasing the amount of exercise to the levels you describe. And as for upping weights by 4kgs... forget it. I have managed to increase weights for leg pushes (or whatever they're called when you sit at the machine and push with your legs), but the arm weights are still very light to everyone else except me...!

thirded, what Fire-Pig said, it doesnt sound too bad to me, and any diet plan that doesnt allow for enjoyment of food wouldnt work IMO

I'm just back from Belgium so I wont list what we ate (and drank) the thread would probably go pop! but they do like their asparagus in a rich sauce...

not being able to get into expensive stuff like bike gear is a real incentive

on a slightly less extreme exercise note, what you are doing Lost, exercise - wise will help gradually, so keep at it

Spot on Guzzi - £3000 to replace leathers was not an option so me shrinking back was the only choice!

Lost 6lbs is brilliant... and yes my level of exercise is probably extreme. Just keep at it and you'll see the difference not just in body weight but in shape too. Remember as well if you are new to exercise some of the fat will be replaced by bigger leaner muscle tissue (same weight but takes up 1/3 of the space) so keep measurements as well.

To lose this much has involved running 10-15k 4 -5 times a week at a much faster pace than I have been used to plus every other night doing up to 5k with the girls training. Then I've done weights every other day - up to 90 minutes at a time and 2-3 power yoga classes a week as well. I'm also not a big eater anyway and as soon as the weather turns warm I am off the nose bag almost immediately. Lots of water as well which helps burn fat.

I wouldn't expect most people to have the time to do the above (and I don't when I'm working) but I wanted to demonstrate that exercise really is worth it and if you are stuck on a plateau upping the exercise will be enough to get things moving again.

I have relatively weak upper body compared to my legs (my husband says I could crack walnuts between my thighs!) and my max weight is 6kg on each arm for about 10-15 reps whiile I can shift about 75-80kg with my legs. Keep at it and build up slowly. Try not to get about 12kg on each arm as that will start to bulk you out a bit, just increase your reps.

I still think 6lbs is cracking - so stick with it

    G

Am I the only one who is sneakily wondering whether GEm's leathers are now TOO big and flappy and she will need to get new ones a size smaller? (winking smiley wotsit!)

I am glad you have mentioned the time it takes, there is no way I could fit that level of time in at the moment (10 hours in the office itself each working day this week - but that will be a bit less next week)

hopefully not, at the price she's stated, Fire-pig, I'm wondering if GEm's leathers are gold plated smiley - winkeye

I thought a couple of hundred on my last pair was a huuuuge amount to spend and me old ones are gosh about 18 or more years old
