Ants are going up & down my silver birch sapling. There are aphids on the leaves. The ants look normal going up. On the way down I can see that their nether ends are distended. Could this be aphid-milk destined for the nest which has entrance holes at the base of the tree?
Ants "farm" blackfly on my philadelphus. Doesn't do the tree any good, but the ants benefit by gathering the honeydew and, apparently, the aphids benefit as the ants protect them.
Thanks for that Trillian41. Looks as if I should change the ants' diet to Nippon.
