Today I went for my annual blood test as part of UKCTOCS This is working on a possible screening programme for ovarian cancer.

The nurse who took the sample was very downbeat, even if they prove this gives a very good screening test, will there be enough money for the NHS to implement it? I wonder whether she knew anything, or whether it was just a bad day.

I have felt privileged to be part of the trial.

That is so good, potentially - our Sil has just died from ovarian cancer and one of our best friends has just had a biopsy, and an urgent MRI scan for tomorrow, as it's very likely she's got it too.

    Hi guys,

F-P, how awful would it be not to have this funded if it proves to be effective>

sometimes i just lie here and shake my head at the whole lottery craziness of cancer funding...

I have much to be thankful to the NHS treatment i have received in abundance over the past few months; and even before that my own cancer treatment was given with grace and efficiency - the very very best of all things NHS.

And yet..in a sense i am aware that there was really no choice but to give me this treatment, in the sense that symptoms presented themselves in such a manner that i required there and now treatment, but how many people die in this country because the screening is non-existant or their GP is reluctant to waste NHS time and money on a referral which may not prove to be necessary? Except that t is necessary to those who are left frantic and worried and second guessing their prognosis.

Why is it that women in particular are so scantilly thought of when it comes to choosing life saving cancer screening and even treatment (as in the drug available in scotland for some cancer, but not funded in england)?

God it is depressing, so depressing.

    Carrick my love,

So, so sorry to hear about your SIl and now your friend. What an awful, sad time this must be for you and your family. Much love to you from someone who has been there my friend xxx

Kris, than for our care - I read your posts and laugh and almost cry.
Multiply our family by millions,I suppose. Also, we're getting to a age where cancer moves closer, like kids playing Grandmothers Footsteps.

From what I have read of the results of this particular trial, it is looking very promising. This is why the prospect of no money to implement it must be so galling. Can't the powers that be see that simple blood tests taken routinely must be cheaper, and far far less traumatic, than having to treat the disease? I know there would be problems about false positives etc, and that I am painting too simplistic a picture but .....

c-b my sympathies for your SiL, and hopes for your friend. Kris, you are an inspiration on these boards - I don't often meet you, but your words are always well worth reading.
