Squeak .... creak! No, not my joints but another week and it's time to push open the Village Hall door in time to get ready for this week's meeting. Gosh, it's warm in here ... if any of you want to just use the benches outside that's fine, but come in and help yourselves to some cool drinks from the fridge. The foxgloves and daisies and ferns are all swaying gently in the breeze, so hopefully the worst of the hot weather is over with.

Everyone interested in eating healthily is welcome on this thread ... it is all about supporting each other as we share our successes and disappointments. Some of us are trying to lose weight, others are trying to keep off the weight they have already lost, and I think the thing we have all realised is eating healthily needs to be a lifestyle choice that we embrace wholeheartedly. There will be temptations along the way and noone said it is easy, but if we can turn our backs on unhealthy foods (while at the same time glaring at them!!) then we will get used to feeling good about ourselves and reap the benefits.

Use this thread as much or as little as you like ... this is certainly not a competition. Come in each morning and write down your intentions for the day, use it as a food diary as we can all learn from each other, pop in to tell us if you have lost weight and we'll cheer with you, and we are very good at commiserating with you if you don't lose the weight you hoped as we all know how disappointing that can be.

We have only one rule that we would be grateful if you would observe and that is not to mention your real life weight. The weight that is right for me could well be completely wrong for you, so nothing is gained by mentioning weights, and it could well be dispiriting for me/you if we let this rule slip. 9 or 10 stone could be too heavy for some of us but others would give their eye teeth to weigh 10 stone. As I say, this is not a competition and I don't need to know your weight any more than you need to know mine. Please tell us if you get into a new stone zone, and we will all be really chuffed for you.

So I think it just remains to remind you all of the Rota thread: it is very motivating to begin a new thread, so please add your name as we just need someone to start a new thread on Monday evening or Tuesday morning which ever suits you best. Don't worry if you can't do links, someone else will do them for you .... just start a new thread with a recognisable title.

Gem's cyber gym is a thread for getting help and encouragement and I think the title is self explanatory!

Last but not least is Katy Tulip's wonderful cookbook thread.

Just popping in - out of the RAIN! Do you remember that wet stuff that comes down? Well it has reached North West Wales now!

Smashing opening Westie, I'll be back. I was hijacked by a biscuit today - asked to taste it to see if we should stock that variety. Very difficult to say no, so I enjoyed it!

Now to prepare a pineapple - with my L*k*l*nd thingy. I think it was worth the money, I think I am a bit quicker preparing them now, and the pieces look better.

Haven't popped in for a while - a bit swamped by work lately. Weight seems static but at least I haven't put any on. Finding it a bit of a challenge at the moment to come up with healthy options which don't need the oven (too hot) and little preparation ( too tired and hot!). Also our youngest who's generally easy to feed doesn't like salads (or risottos). Am mainly doing stir frys or easy pasta dishes. Today I tried to do a coronation chicken style thing with left over chicken from yesterday's roast. I make the sauce with extra low fat mayonnaise, 0% fat Greek yoghurt, couple of teaspoons of curry powder, tablespoonful of mango chutney and some flaked almonds - served with some rice (and green salad for OH and me). Unfortunately I'd run out of mango chutney so ended up using a combination of apricot jam and Branston pickle - it tasted better than it sounds, honest!

Another idea which goes down ok with OH and DS and is easy in this weather is to marinate some salmon fillets in some sweet chilli sauce, lime juice and chopped coriander in the fridge all day and then after work I just cook them on the griddle for a few minutes. I like them with some watercress and a few new potatoes. I do something a bit similar with chicken breasts (marinate in olive oil, lemon juice, mixed herbs and white wine).

Any other ideas for recipes that only need the hob or microwave ( I don't have a Remoska - yet!)
    gratefully received. KOKO

thanks for opening up, Westie, & here's to a new week. Shall have a weigh tomorrow morning but judging by clothing things are pretty stable.

Hazeyjane, I did grilled chicken tonight. Mixed olive oil, lemon juice & chives as a dressing and brushed this over some chicken breasts which had been hammered flat between two sheets of cling film with a rolling pin. Cook on a very hot griddle pan for about 4-5 mins each side, depending how thick you've left the meat, then serve with salad and new potatoes dressed with left over oil/lemon. It was a really summery dish to eat, and Even Better was v quick to do, so as we were both late back we resisted a take out. Hurrah!

FP don't tell me it's raining in your neck of the woods as we head up there smiley - winkeye

Lost, sorry to hear you're feeling hot & bothered. Cool shower? I've just had one and it was bliss.

Yes, just had one. Works wonders. Calm is restored. I'm not very good at hot weather...

Just eaten cold melon for supper. That was good too!

My hob dishes tend to include lots of rice/ risotto/ pasta ones too. Have you tried making your own kebabs, Hazeyjane? They can be grilled if you don't have access to a barbecue and can be served with rice or jacket potatoes (done in a microwave if you can't face the oven) if others don't want salad. I make some chicken ones marinaded in natural yoghurt that are delicious at this time of year...

    >salmon fillets in some sweet chilli sauce, lime juice and chopped coriander<

That is exactly the recipe for some cooked salmon fillets Tesbury were selling today. I was just looking ... I like to cook salmon skin side up myself. I'm lucky and have a Remoska so do the roast veggies in the bottom and pop the salmon skin side up towards the end.

Disastrous meal out with ex-colleagues for post-birthday celebrations ... only one more to go now, I think.

We went to a lovely venue, tables on a verandah right over the beach (unfortunately, tide out, typical) but warm and sunny evening. The idea was for tapas with everyone choosing their fave plus a few staples. I chose aubergines and whitebait but these, along with absolutely everything else, were deep fried in crispy batter. The only exception was the mushrooms - which were swimming in a deep pool of garlic butter. They even treated me to a Pimms - no idea of the calorific value for that, but by then I was past caring. The only healthy thing I ate was the half strawberry in my Pimms.

Lovely evening with my ex-boss and co-workers, though. That is what I must focus on for now.

One swallow doesn't make a summer, they say. Don't let one disastrous meal put you off your ultimate aim, Archi.

I'm struggling a bit too. Stressful day at work yesterday with additional meeting after work dealing with next year's stress-to-come. Lots on at home this week in preparation for big event at the weekend for which I have responsibility. I can feel the tension building up in me.

As a result, last night, I ate a slice of bread, a boiled egg, a packet of raspberries and half a melon... all of this /after/ dinner! Now that is infinitely better than the takeaway meal I used to eat under those circumstances (after a full dinner, mind you...), but it's still far too much and totally unnecessary. Why do I still associate feelings of stress with a need to eat? I didn't particularly enjoy the food I had and now feel morose and full of self-loathing for failing to deal with my feelings more effectively, in addition to the stress which still exists. H'mm. Note to self. Don't do this!

Stressful day at work yesterday with additional meeting after work dealing with next year's stress-to-come

Albeit that we need an income, I think it might have been an addict thing that had me continuing to work in extreme stress for thirty years, to the extent I was unable to resist early retirement for health reasons. I still got stressed in retirement until I began to tackle my addictions.

Why do I still associate feelings of stress with a need to eat?  I was for a long time unable to make the link, so maybe that is a stage on the road to confronting the addictive nature of eating unnecessary food. I do not think I could really surrender my addiction to eating unnecessarily until I began to realise that I was doing it, rather than just eating because I was hungry.

However, I have often heard it said that the good thing about recovery is that one gets one feelings back and the bad thing is one gets ones feelings back!

the addictive nature of eating unnecessary food

I am sorry for writing the above without qualification. I do acknowledge that people also eat unnecessary food who are not addicts. However, I am an addict and as it says in the book "Alcoholics Anonymous", I believe that for me there is "no mental defence" against addictive behaviours.

I realise that some readers find such messages unhelpful and irritating, but I also realise that others identify with me. I am helped by the identification of similarities with others although I recognise that ultimately we are all unique beings with differences as well as similarities. It usually is more helpful for me to concentrate on the similarities rather than the differences.

    Morning everyone :0)

I don't think I have an addictive personality but I think there is a switch in my brain! I managed to use writing the opener as a switch and I'm not struggling today. I've been struggling for a few weeks ...

It was Tolkyn writing on this thread that made me realise that this is a life long issue for us all, and wondering about my own relationship with food and it got me reading/thinking about why. I was nervous about doing it at that moment as the switch in my mind was in the right position at that point. But it was the right thing to do as I was thinking clearly at that time.

Having given it some thought (with the help of Eat Less say Goodbye to Overeating - Gillian Riley) I then took on board her suggestions for how to combat this destructive cycle.

Not doing badly, but for some reason was just beginning to get a bit lax .... hence summer trousers a itsy bitsy teeny weeny bit tight :0)))

I had an awful day yesterday, I was very productive at home with chores in the morning and an incredibly busy afternoon and evening at work involving back to back meetings and then a session with young people with disabilities, which is normally a joy but last night everyone needed lots of attention lots of emotional stuff flying around.

Anyway, I rushed out to work without my pack up meaning I had to dash out and buy some crispbreads and fruit which now looking back did not give me enough energy.

Once home at 9pm I realised I had not made the dinner before going to work so had to cobble stuff for family, decided to have beans on toast for myself and then found there was no bread.

At that point I ranted and moaned at everyone, how come when you all get home from work I take care of you and when I get home from work I am still taking care of you all. To be honest I was a little emotional myself by then.

Anyway lesson learned, lunch packed for today and I won't let myself get out of fuel again.

Good points at no time did I want to eat chocolate and I have a lovely partner who was very kind to me, once he realised I was in major wobble mode.

    KOKO everyone

this is a life long issue for us all  Whilst it maybes for addict eaters, I am not sure that it is for those who have the ability to eat moderately but at times choose to eat unnecessarily.

Even for me as an addict, I am not certain that the primary issue is focussing on what I eat rather it is on focussing on spiritual well-being from which all else about my life flows.

What a lot of posts overnight. I am posting from work as we had a tremendous thunderstorm at 2 am, took all the power out of the village and it's not back yet. To make matters worse, when I got downstairs, the kitchen wasn flooded. A drain outside had blocked and this had come in under the door. Grrrrr!!!

Having swept most of the water out, I had a grapefruit and a litre of water. (Too many years in the Tropics make me unable to open a fridge during a power cut!) I left them to it, Younger Piglet is off work today as well as his father so they can cope.

Archi, remember we love you, try to look back on the evening as a time with friends, with people who want to be with you, as you are, the archi they know and love. The time for healthy eating is not necessarily at these occassions, you say it was the last of the birthday ones, so store the happy memories of the evening and junk the bad ones.

Better get on with work now!

Lots of helpful comments here. Thanks for talking about the links with stress and personality types, Tolkny. I realise I get stressed over all kinds of situations which are not in themselves stressful - so again, it's my reaction which is 'off', not just the situation itself. H'mm. Had another one of those today, when my boss waltzed in with his own plan, railroading mine, and I felt utterly squashed. He knows me well enough to realise that his good idea wasn't maybe that great in hindsight and did apologise to me, which helped a lot. But it got me thinking about full-scale wobbles, a phrase (and state) I recognise all too well...

I am not good at spontaneity. I am not good at flexibility. I like control. These are personality traits which come into play with food as well as with other situations.

I guess I need to look at how I deal with the unpredictable and change and why I feel so threatened by these things...

Its stopped Bloke from going to the shop had buying pies "because there is no bread" he now has oatcakes and whatever else he can find, gotta be better than pies, certainly smells better *shudder*

and when I get home late, having had no lunch (like last night - 18.00 oops) I can have them with cheese and not get cross coz he's noshed all the bread

Another sheepish post from me, creeping in at the back. I am so not in control of my eating at the moment - and it is only something I can sort out. I am trying to start with getting some exercise under control. I did the race for life on Sunday - it was 28C and in full sun (started 11.30am) so I only ran part of it, but that was more running than I had done for weeks, and felt satisfying, so I must get back to more regular exercise, and not eating rubbish.

We had quite a healthy meal tonight, and I've eaten a few strawberries since, so tomorrow is another new day. I am not happy with the way I look at the moment, so is my impetus to get things sorted.

KOKO, and thanks for the lovely opening Westie - good to see you all.

WW tonight and a 'stay the same' which, TBH, is OK as I had a 'nose in biscuit barrel' day last week as well as 2 'sodditI can'tbebotheredtocook' evenings.

I am over report writing but have now had a list of paperwork that must be completed by certain dates. I have also been chided for not doing some paperwork I know I have done so I am abit cheesed off by that.

Have had healthyish meal tonight and enjoyed it. I notice how much smaller my portions are becoming now that I see the value of the food and encourage myself to eat slowly.

Drinking more water but still not enough. Must try harder!

    Evening.

Another surprising weigh in today, down 1lb 14oz so pleased if somewhat puzzled.

Lovely to see Pug, very admiring of any running at all, never mind in 28 degrees.

I'm a bad one for stress related over eating, I put on half a stone in the twelve weeks running up to my redundancy last year and am still toiling to loose it. I generally take the view that our sub optimal behaviour serves us some purpose and the trick is to figure out what the purpose is so as to find a better way of meeting that need.

I read Susie Orbach Fat is a Feminist Issue years ago and whereas I would prefer a tome entitled Fat is an Issue of Opression, (because I think a lot of the themes she identifies are equally applicable to men) I do think she made some valid points about power and control and self defence.

Anyway, KOKO and lets have a happy week.

Lost do you know my stress technique for dealing with people like your boss?

Imagine yourself in a beautiful woodland glade - can you feel the dappled sunlight warm on your back? Can you see the woodland flowers nodding in the breeze? Can you hear the gentle trickle of water flowing?

    Isn't the water beautifully clear?

So clear you can see the face of the b*gg*r you are holding under

Ha, you made me laugh, Fire-Pig!

H'mm, techniques for dealing with stress. I've been thinking about this. No matter what the situation, my reaction has the power to make it better or worse for me. My boss was tactless but was not deliberately undermining or undervaluing me (which is how I /felt/). He apologised as soon as he realised he had stepped over a line. He was actually far more gracious than I was...

Just realising that it's not the situation per se which tips me into fury, tears or heightened heart rate but my reaction to it was liberating, I have to say. Now I have to try and remember that in the /midst/ of the situation, not just in retrospect.

On the plus side, my eating was better yesterday and I did plenty of exercise which helped. Doing that, even though I didn't /feel/ like it, shows me how unreliable my feelings usually are!!

    Oh, I forgot...

Today is the session with the gym instructor, fondly labelled as the 'exit strategy'. I have reached the end of the free exercise referral from my GP and now have to have all my measurements taken etc. and future plans discussed. I am hoping the instructor will be wowed by my progress, that the measurements will prove the benefits of exercise and that I emerge from this session with glowing virtue...

More realistically, since my swimming package thingy gives me access to the gym, I will just carry on with the gym sessions, but hopefully we can review what I do and maybe add some other things like that treacherous cross-step thingy which surely must burn some calories since it looks such hard work!

At the risk of cross-threading, I still find the gym pretty boring, but certainly nowhere near as daunting as I did in January, which again must be progress of some sort, yes?

    Morning,

Westie and gizzie, oooooooops, I mentioned the R word!!!O)))

I did chicken brests stuffed with spinach and horseradish last night with salad and cous cous which was really nice........from one of the many slimming club cooking books I have!!O))))

It's easy to make as well, just tinned spinach, drained and dryed off, horseradish sauce, mixe together, make a slit in the side of the chicen breast, stuff the filling in and do in the oven (or Romoska!!) for 40 mins and it's done, makes a nice Sunday lunch/weekday/special do/friends around meal.

Doing okish with the pounds loss but the hot weather is a killer as my bad right leg and hip are agony, keep getting pins and needles in my right ankle and foot (due to nerve damage after the op to put steel plate an pins in)so not nice but hey I'm still breathing........well I think I am anyway.........

TTFN and will try and pop back later!!!O))

Ana, great news! Onward and downward or something!

Lost - glad you liked it. I used it one time when I was giving a Health & Safety Presentation as a Guest Speaker. One person present played a real devil's advocate position and seemingly wilfully misunderstood me. She even questioned my word when I said we had had legal advice, and when I said I would take her queries higher up the system and let her know. At that point she asked how could she trust me to let her know the outcome. At that point she was well and truly under the water! Mind you the Chairman was close to it, for not stepping in and telling her she was out of order!!! (The magnificent outcome was that I had a reply from higher up, backing me completely within two days and could let them know - that made me feel good, so I let her surface!)

I hope you have a good session with your gym bod, and do wow them.

Westie et al, I am tempted by a Remoska but I have a very small kitchen and don't know where I would put it.

Day off today and once more I am going to make some cards. It's OH's birthday on Monday, I also have two other cards to make for then and one to go in the post for Tuesday, so I'd better skidaddle!

Doing something constructive with your hands, such as cardmaking, gardening or embroidery does stop them grazing on food! This is especially true if the embroidery is on white silk!

    Hello everyone.

Long absence due to incredibly busy work/home time which means that I have been nibbling round the edges of inconsequential DTA threads rather than engaging in anything more substantial.

Good news ... I have officially lost a stone! Yay. I luurve the way I look and the new clothes I have bought. Some of you may know that about 6 months ago I started going to Slimming World to support my teenage daughter. She has lost 1.5 stone and looks completely luscious. I was horribly sceptical at first, having loathed a rival institution when I used it years ago but this has turned out to be a much more supportive and good natured environment.

I identify with all the discussion about stress/addictions/eating although I feel I am not sure if what I have had in the past is aproper addiction But my default reaction to stress has always been to eat and I have had to train my body out of expecting certain types of fuel - which makes the recent loss all the more surprising as there have been lots of heavy meals and long days. But I have been more self-aware and less uncontrolled than in the past and I did balance the big dinners on my recent work trip with lots of pool lengths.

Ana/Isabel - well done, fantastic to hear your news, both of you. A huge cheer to you. [And Isabel, nice to see you back; I always enjoy reading your posts across the threads.]

Still on the plateau here but at least it's not going up. We have a number of difficult staffing cases going on at the moment which are starting to take their toll a bit so I am determined I am not going to use carp food or drink as some sort of reward for having a hard time. We have a long weekend coming up and it will be bliss to take a break and paddle in the sea. That and my garden, husband & dog are reward enough (not necessarily in that order!)

Oh, and my way of dealing with stressful people is to mutter to myself 'well at least I don't have to sh@g them' which is probably a lot ruder than FP's method but believe me always raises a smile....

    LOL Westie!!!

Just about sums it up really!!!O)))

Really pleased with the 3lb lost in the last 2 weeks, the first time in years I've felt not only positive about losing weight but confident that maybe this time I'll do it and get to my goal weight.

Funny isn't it really.........it's easy enough to put the weight on but trying to lose it is a damn sight harder.........worth in in the end though!!O))

PG, one of the best things about my way of relieving stress is telling someone else who is going through it. You can build it up for as long as they will stand - string quartet playing in the background etc etc, then you reach the punchline. It never fails to raise a smile. I have also been called evil!

Veg & sausage casserole simmering now, after a good day in this pig sty.

    Ana well done ... :0)

Fire-Pig, a friend of mine has bought a flat in Bulgaria and the kitchen is absolutely tiny! She isn't bothering with an oven at all and just having a microwave and a Remoska! I think it is what I would do in the same circumstances.

Isobel!! Result!! :0))) Well done you two :0)))

Pina stuck on the plateau ... we've all been there and understand how frustrating it is. KOKO.

giggle making steady progress ... well done Girl Wonder :0)

Fire-Pig ... I hope your bangers went down a treat. We're having cauliflower cheese/tiny bits of crispy streaky bacon (cooked in the Remoska!) and a hard boiled egg and a couple of small spuds .... OH is still weeding so I wont start it til he comes in.

    Well done everyone ....

I've just made a very healthy (if a little hot) curry sauce which would be good for WW and mostly out of my store cupboard. Takes about 20 mins from start to table

Add a couple of sprays of fry light to a heavy based non-stick pan. Gently fry some chopped shallot, chopped garlic, some ginger, chilli-flakes, a few cardamom seeds, a generous pinch of curry powder and cook for a few minutes stirring. Add a generous amount of halved cherry tomatoes and stir to make sure they are well coated. Then add a tin of chopped tomatoes, bring to the boil, then cover, reduce to a simmer and leave for 10 mins. Once it has thickened then add some prawns bring back to the boil, stir and simmer for a few minutes. Add black pepper (and salt if you like it) for the simmer

Serve with rice and wilted spinach.

I reckon that you would only really need to count the cals for your prawns and rice and then add about 50 for everything else.

Westie - the bangers went down a treat. Usually I make this casserole with some red wine in with the tomatoes but today I used pork & apple sausages and put cider in instead. OH and I thought it made an interesting difference, more delicate flavour. YP just said "You expect me to remember what it tasted like last time???"

I don't think I could do without a hob in my kitchen - I do stir fries two or three times most weeks, as I understand it, I could not do them in a Remoska.

GEm, your curry sauce sounds interesting. I don't usually use prawns in curry preferring them in my Chinese dishes. Perhaps I need to move out of my comfort zone!

You are right Fire Pig, the element is in the lid of the Remoska so stir frying isn't an option however ..... I love roast veggies and when they are done I pop whatever I am going to eat with them on top of/mix in with the veggies and put the lid back quickly.

The greatest advantage to me is that you don't need to keep much of an eye on the Remoska as it is an enclosed cooking device and so pretty safe.

But enough ... this isn't the Remoska thread :0)
