Hello and welcome to MFC this week! If you are interested in living healthily, then this is the place to be. Many of us are trying to lose weight in order to be healthier, but it's not all about diets or fads: we are more interested in long-term health and like to encourage each other to do that in whatever way works best for you!

We have only one rule that we would be grateful if you would observe and that is not to mention your real life weight or clothes sizes, because that can be discouraging to some people. We prefer to live in the esoteric algebraic world of W, X, Y and Z stones!!!

We open a new thread each week: if you'd like to volunteer for this, see the Rota thread:

We've also come to realise that exercise needn't be the bane of our lives but can be very helpful; see GEm's Gym thread for more advice on that topic:

And finally, for deliciously healthy recipes, see the thread:

Morning all, an unsurprising 1.25lb up for me today, after a manic week of birthday party preparations involving late night cake creation sessions, then a weekend of celebration involving a couple of slices of said cake and a scrummy barbecue lunch on Saturday (though as hostess and barbecook I didn't overindulge as I had to be sure the guests had all eaten their fill first!). Possibly it was the couple of beers with my parents and brother, or the cake, or the stress, or a combination of all the above, but even so it's only a small blip in the scheme of things, and Puzzling had a lovely birthday so it's all ok!

    Onwards and downwards, KOKO all,
    Puzzler

I think you got off 'lightly' Puzzler! You showed remarkable restraint but in my opinion even more importantly, enjoyed it. To eat food without enjoying it would be terrible.

    Happy Birthday to Puzzling ;0)

Another checking in - and to all those watchers who came with me last night weren't the views fabulous? We had a very enjoyable meal, the only flaw was that my sea bass had been seasoned far too heavily which spoilt the delicate flavour. On complaining the head waiter said "Oh, yes they do tend to have a heavy hand" I can't be the first to complain so why do they do it?

People at the next table chose a dessert called Chocolate and strawberry degustation (to share). There were all sorts of chocolate shapes, scattered with strawberries, spun sugar shapes and I don't know quite what. It was the sort of thing I had only ever imagined entered into a fantasy design competition! It didn't tempt me at all, I had Rhubarb Creme Brulee and it was delicious!

And so another week starts, may we all make more wise decisions than foolish.

Well done you :0) We had a meal at Zizzi last week and the mushroom risotto (which the menu said was spicy) had chillies in it and it was so so so hot that it was really difficult/unpleasant to eat.

The dish most of us chose wasn't available any more and as we were getting short of time (we had waited 20 minutes by now and DD1 was due to be playing a gig at a local pub) we quickly chose the risotto without discussing it with the waiter, and got the surprise of our lives!

When we subsequently told the waiter it came as no surprise to him.

    Had to chuckle today.

According to scales at doctors surgery, I have gained 3 kg over the last 18 months, during which time I have gone down by 3 dress sizes, and lost at least 2 1/2 stones by my scales at home. Waist measurment has also shrunk by about 4 inches.

Just passing this on to encourage others who get spurious readings recorded.

Scales are definitely strange things, Auntie Prue. At my class last night, I had lost another 2lbs. This was despite a weekend of white wine in the garden and a big bowl of tiramisu.

Is my physiology weird or is weight loss strange or could it be a change in my exercise regime? I have recently switched from mainly using the cross trainer, which is just too hot in this weather, to swimming. Maybe swimming uses more calories.

Anyway, today I am enjoying wearing a shaped summer dress that only just fitted last summer and now hangs loose.

Puzzler, I do think some things seem to have a short-term effect on weight that is disproportionate to their actual calorific value - maybe it's to do with water retention. Cake and beer are major offenders for me - I always feel bloated and heavy afterwards.

Anyway, Puzzling's happy birthday is definitely worth a short-term blip.

its quite usual I think, Isabel, a change in exercise routine, or what you do can produce a pleasing result.

I believe swimming burns more calories that say a cross trainer, provided it is vigorous and you get out of breath. But I'm not sure. I know I was always flaked out after aquafit, but very happy. Working against water, not air is hard. I also have found that adding LBT to my list has made clothes looser

Trip to the Big Smoke to be treated to a West End Show and meal out went exceedingly well. DS refused to let me pay for anything. The show - Jersey Boys - was great fun (apart from some *gratuitous language* which surprised me, but it was relevant to the plot).

We went to Zilli's Green - their vegetarian place in Soho. We shared a platter of meze to start with then I had a barley salad with aubergine, courgette and asparagus, which was delicious, felt healthy, but too much. However, that worked out well as DS's ravioli was a gastronomic portion and not enough for him, so he polished off my salad and his wife's mushroom and truffle risotto. No dessert, but I did indulge in a glass of prosecco with raspberry purée, and an espresso.

I met a cousin in London for lunch in glorious Regents Park yesterday. We had salmon rissoles, MUSTARD sauce (had a little giggle to myself) with wilted spinach and we shared a small bowl of chips. I tried to be controlled. I was treated to a Pimms but they whipped it away before I could embarrass her by fishing the fruit out. I was taking a call at the time. Feel cheated. Another espresso. Still feel lean and fit having unexpectedly lost two pounds and kept it off, in spite of festivities.

Why am I wasting so much time fixating and writing about food in such detail? I must be obsessed (as OH often accuses me).

Good to see you Auntie Prue, and to hear about the wonderful data entry at your GP's surgery! The next time I'm weighed at mine they should notice a big difference - I was last weighed in January and I was wearing my walking boots at the time!

Hi everyone, I hope you are all having a good week.

Tonight is my weigh-in night and I have had a great weeks since I went back to R@semary C@nley last wednesday.

I have a) eaten very sensibly (including a BBQ)
    b) swum twice
    c) done aquafit twice
    d) joined a pilates class
    e) walked
    g) gardened
    h) not drunk any alcolhol.

I feel really good - my first session of pilates was hard but wonderful.

So I am anticipating a good weight loss tonight.

Anyone who tells me that swimming burns more calories than those gym thingies has my undying love! Today I did 2 1/2 km in one session, which is a personal best. I had the time. I'm busy at the weekend (again), so I decided to do extra today. I hope it pays off.

Now I have to cancel all my bank cards as I lost my purse yesterday. For the first time, I see what you lot all mean about exercise and stress. It was a pleasure to escape the stress in the pool this morning. Now I'm back to the real world...

Sounds like a great (re)start Sixties Relic, glad to hear you enjoyed pilates. I'm a bit, (well OK, a heck of a lot) of a fan. I am of aquafit to, its a great form of excercise

OK Lost, my take on aquafit, its like an aerobic exercise class but in a pool, so you are doing aerobic class type moves, like star jumps, running on the spot, "rocking horse", jump and twist (I never got the hang of doing that one slowly, but could do it very fast...) all against water, not air, so you work harder, but its lower impact on knees and ankles

We also used to do this "jogging" across the pool but in the deep end, waistband float things were available for that if you wanted them, we used drink bottles full of water for arm weights, those neoprene "frog" gloves to create resistance for arms underwater and occasionally teacher would get us to put kiddies arm bands round our ankles (that was a hoot, they used to end up round my knees). I think she might have been a sadist in a former life.

It sounds utterly ghastly when written down like this but it was really good fun - honest. You didnt have to work hard if you didnt want to. I've not found a class that good since I moved.

pilates to follow when I've found some links smiley - smiley

Aquafit sounds fun. Water is definitely my favourite medium. I'd rather be in water than air any day! The only downside locally is ours is at a time I can't make, but I might have to look further afield, because it does sound useful.

Hi all - back from my bike trip to France and just done an hours run, an hour with trainer and an hours power yoga (I am now officially starving!!!!). My muscles are groaning having had a 5 day break but I am sure I shall be able to walk (just) tomorrow.

Exercise and Stress - well partly it's do with the concentration, partly to do with the endorphins and partly to do with the fight or flight response which exercising tones down so you get less of the adrenalin and cortisone (?) coursing through your veins which calms you down. You can goofle for the science but as you say Lost it's a pleasure just to lose yourself in something physical. Perhaps why those with a physical job report less stress than those who are more sedentary in their jobs? It's just that the exercise means they cope better?

I always send OH out for a long run if he comes home from work stressed out. He grumbles when I push him out the door but is usually grateful for it when he comes back. You also sleep better which makes you better able to deal with stress (it's called exhaustion!)

I've been trying to work on my upper underarms of late (as I get older they aren't quite as taut as I'd like. Boy it's hard work!

possibly GEm, my job is partly physical (sort of 50:50 in office / out doors ratio, but more like 75:25 some weeks (I'm too senior to take 25:75, which I like, but they want me in the office). Certainly a whole week in the office and I'm climbing the walls and I'd hate to be totally office based

pilates yes, knew I'd forgotten something

On the face of it, it looks like you are not working hard at all, lots of lying on the floor, certainly it took a bit of convincing and a stern lady from Enfield who had the proper equipment (reformers and stuff) to convince the Bloke it was worth a punt. It works partly to improve core stability, so not solely abs but deeper postural muscles, to stabilise the spine etc, tryig to isolate and work specific muscle groups and tryin to stop other strnger sets from taking over, hence concentration is needed

    seems a reasonable summary.

Folk often get directed to it due to spinal injury, well thats how I started. Not a quick fix, more like permenatn rehab (my description on a bad day) but far more preferable than the operation they threatened me with smiley - smiley

now thats enough of hijacking the thread into Cybergym land for one day, I fear

I have had a bad back most of my life - which I can usually manage okay. Pilates is good (I have done it before, years ago) as a way of strengthening those core muscles that support your lower spine.

Aquafit is great because it relieves the weight frr your back, hips and knees - so it's great of you are a bit (!) overweight and don't feel you can do ordinary land-based aerobics. You can work quite hard in the water too.

The pool where I do it is a constant 4ft deep, so ideal for aquafit.

Does it help to think in terms of when you look back on a day or the week that you have eaten sensible amounts of healthy food for 80 per cent of the time and the rest of the time was perhaps less good, but not as bad as it could have been?

    Does that make sense?

I ought to tackle the utility companies but first I'm trying to work on the churchwardens to get them to set the heating so that it's not on full blast when the temperature is 28C anyway!

My eating has been variable, but I am balancing the bad a bit by reducing the size of my meals to accomodate the eating up of spare cake... Not ideal, I know, but at least I'm thinking about it.

Another reason for losing weight slowly is that your skin has a chance to keep up with your shrinking.

I do have abdominal wrinkly bits (too much information - I know!) but have avoided those huge flaps of skin because of slow weight loss.

The post childbirth kangaroo pouch has gone, and I have a naturally occuring waist - ie not one manufactured by tighting middle bits of clothing.

Treats are also important. I had my biannual cake treat at our local garden centre yesterday -a slice of marzipan and cherry cake.

If such goodies were totally forbidden an otherwise very healthy eating regime would be harder to sustain.

Back to sensible eating today : )

Evening, and well done so far to all - lots of encouraging reports this week so far! Boo - to resist the Cadbury's chocolate is amazing - even the smell when we were there years ago made me want to eat it - so top marks!

Archie - sounds like a top trip to me, and I enjoyed hearing about your food eaten too. Auntie Prue - I'm so glad you knew what you weighed at the docs last time - as otherwise you would have been very disappointed! At least you could have taken in some of your too big clothes though!

I didn't get in here last night as we had no internet access for some reason. The week so far has been good I think. I've eaten reasonably sensibly - managed a 5k run on Tuesday night (with some walks interspersed) and had the most mammoth ironing session last night (finished at close to midnight, but an empty ironing heap at last, hurrah!)

I've dog walked yesterday and today and hope to run again tomorrow - I am registered for a 10k run in less than 4weeks, so need to get my finger out. I think I will weigh myself tomorrow, for the first time for about 6 weeks. I am not overly optimistic, as before this week things have not been good, but I will at least know where I stand.

KOKO to all others, and waves to all absent/lurking friends. (Where is Laura by the way - I'm missing her comments).

Good to see you Pug. Auntie Prue, I quite agree that treats are necessary. I don't want to say for evermore that I can't eat that because of my diet. Now I can look at things and say they don't tempt me any more - which is very different.

Puzzler, I wish you joy as Church Treasurer, and hope you have more funds than we do!

Laura is taking a break from ML, I had an owl from her last week, nothing to do with MFC. I hope she'll be able to find her way back before too long.

Anyone want any rain - come and get it! It is probably my fault, an extractor fan is being fitted in my office next week, so I no longer melt each time we have a heat wave! For security reasons I have to have the door closed while I am working.

I have another day in my boss's office today doing data entry, not my favourite work. I have packed cherries and 2 of the K*ll*ggs plain chocolate Fibre Plus muesli bars to keep me going! (as well as my usual healthy lunch) They will be better for me than buying full bodied choccy bars or flapjacks downstairs!

And cooked breakfasts in the B&B and no dog walking. And a pitstop at Dinky's Diner on the way home (don't ask).

So onwards and downwards as Puzzler says. MrG did a chicken caesar salad last night by roasting the chicken & bacon and it was very nice indeed.

love to Laura and other lurkers. Boo, don't beat yerself up, hon. I think that showed amazing restraint in CadburyWorld. Suspect I may have gone wild instead!

    *thank you nigel molesworth

Sixties Relic - scales are not our best friends - they are capricious beasties at the best of times!

Fire-Pig, I NEED my scales. If I am in control, I am happy to weigh myself. I understand that your weight can fluctuate every day so dont worry about a few minor ups and downs.

But if I have essentially stopped trying to lose weight, start nibbling, etc I stop getting on the scales, too. Total, pathetic avoidance strategy!

I have tried the "throw away the scales, stop dieting" approach and I always gain weight.

I haven't lost anything for 2 weeks and I am really fed up about it. I haven't been eating loads of the wrong things and have been exercising 3-4 times a week. Poo, poo and poo.

Oh Welshted, poor you - that is so frustrating isn't it. Maybe you will find that next week will see all the hard work come to fruition - that old MFC mantra "the week in hand" (or in your case, 2 weeks). Could hormones be interfering? They certainly stop me losing weight for a week or two at a time.

Sixties - I'm with you on the scales (not literally, or I'd probably break them!) If I'm not weighing myself I am not eating properly either - head in the sand, la la la.

I have got back on mine this morning after a good week, and am pleased to see that I am not much heavier than 3 weeks ago, so this week has probably done some good. I will get back into the weekly weighing now.

I've just been out for a 5k run/occasional walk to get my breath back. A day of housework is ahead (day off work), and a weekend off with a barbecue at a friend's house on Sunday, and DH birthday on Monday to celebrate. Must watch the nibbling!

Have a lovely hot weekend all (for those in the sunshine) and a lovely damp one for the others.

    Pug x

Hello, sorry for not responding to others posts as I haven't read the recent thread, just popped in for a little cry for help. Eating completely gone crazy and in a massive state not coping with life at all. Will try and check in tomorrow to see if I can get myself back on the straight and narrow for 24 hours. x

Myria, get down to the local paper shop and buy a slimming magazine - any of them will do. Read some of the success stories. This will help.

Ideally, WALK to the shop or go for a swim. Get some exercise. It will make you feel better.

    Chin up!

Myra, I hope you check back in tomorrow and will feel able to look after yourself ... it is a vicious circle ... eat badly, feel dreadful, eat badly, feel dreadful.

Try and break out of it and Sixties suggestion is really good.

Can you get to the shops and buy in some fruit and
    salad things?

Maybe write down everything you eat tomorrow ... come in here and tell us about it.

We are here to listen, and encourage.

The thread can get a bit quiet at the end of the week, but someone will be along I'm sure.

Take heart cyber chum .... :0)
