I should learn not to Google - I went to the doctor this morning with abdominal pains and flu symptoms. She felt my abdomen and said that I had an enlarged spleen - it is very sore and swollen. She is sending me for an ultrasound and blood tests, but was vague when I asked her what could be the cause.

I made the mistake of coming home and googling 'causes of enlarged spleen'.

    Gulp!

Sometimes google is deffo not your friend, Susie. Been there, done that. Why not go for the simple option first - an infection? You mention flu like symptoms, so its not beyond the bounds of probability, is it?

Sorry that you have this worry and wishing you the best possible outcome.

    Thanks for your reply, cap.

I have since been on the phone to my sister and she has managed to calm me down.

You're right, of course, it could be any number of things but when the first result that came up was the 'chronic myeloid leukemia' bit of the Macmillan site it sent my imagination into overdrive. About the only symptom I could definitely say 'no' to was the 'penile priapism'.

Snork at the "no", susie. Sometimes life is so unfair.

And what is it about sisters? The first person I rang after getting a telephone call from my Dr which led to my particular google was to my sis. And I'm the eldest, so its not as if I grew up going to her for support. Well, anyway, lets hear for the girls.

I'm glad you are feeling a little better

susie, it was one of the symptoms tLG had when he had glandular fever - I'd suspect infection first, and until you've had the ultrasound and blood tests, no one's going to know any more anyway.

On the subject of sisters, I too am the eldest, of three sisters. Curiously, the one I go to for support and soothing nowadays is the baby of the three of us, so it's not a role that she played when we were growing up. Our middle sister is much less sympathetic. Maybe it's to do with 'middle child syndrome'.

Actually, the younger two are much closer in age to one another than I am to either of them. There was quite a big gap between me and the next baby, then two came along very close together. As children, they were always very close and I tended to be on the outside of things. Now, though, it's the youngest sister who is close to both me and the middle sister. I find my middle sister hard work and avoid contacting her as much as I can.
