Kris, if you interested in Soroptimism, my email is in Peet's, so you can get in touch with me that way. You can get more information if you Google "Soroptimists" and click on the SIGBI option. I'd be happy to put you in touch with your nearest club.
I'm amazed myself quite often at what Soroptimists achieve. We even have a seat at the UN in recognition of the work we do. Women working together can be a formidable force!

Hi G-AC,
would love to take you up on your email offer, and will. I just need to get my strength back a little, and work on a little cognitive de-function before committing myself to something I hope to become passionate about.
Can't believe I have never come across Soroptimists before to be honest! I have sent the links (stop hunger/sexual abuse etc) to the petitions i found on the site i accessed, to all my family and friends (sorry, i guess that sentence should be reversed to make sense).
Thanks,
kris

Thanks for that G-AC - I only had a vague and, I discover, not entirely accurate idea of Soroptimism - I may well be moved to make contact with them in the area I am soon moving to (not your area) as it looks like a good way to find like-minded people as well as interesting and worthwhile in itself.

Fee and kris, I forgot to mention that Soroptimists like to enjoy themselves too, and for some reason we seem to think that most activities are improved if food is involved somewhere along the line!
I think that, as an organisation, we have hidden our light under a bushel for too long, and it's time we started shouting from the rooftops. If either of you would like more info, please contact me either on this board or via Peet's.
I'm closing this message in the Soroptimist tradition:
"yours in friendship
G-AC"

GAC,
I'm not, but seem to recall this coming up some time ago (maybe a couple of years) and some MLrs were. Perhaps it's worth posting this in TB?
Good luck,
Liz

Yes - I'm a Soroptimist in the Northern England Region. This is the first message I have ever posted. You have flushed out a lurker!
We always say that Soroptimists get things done!

No, I'm not, but I have wondered about it. I have also wondered about joining the Fawcett Society, the Fabian Society and others. Just never got around to it. Like so many things. Thanks for the nudge. I will investigate whether there is a branch in South Wales.

When I still lived in England I was a Soroptimist and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was the youngest in a branch that had at least one member aged 80+.
One abiding memory is trying to sell tickets for a fete stall that involved winning fluffy toys, including a vile green Orville. It was hissing down that day. I kept asking people if they wanted to win a green awful. We did manage to raise a lot of money.

Yes, Morganish, I am sure there will be a club in South Wales. If you would like to email me offboard via Peet's I will put you in touch.
Otherwise,Google "SIGBI" and that will take you to our Federation, and you should be able to find your local club via the official website. They may well have their own page on this website too.

An interesting link, G-A cat; thank you. I've always known the term, but lazily have never followed it up. I'm sure some of my more go-ey relations were Soroptimists - you've prompted me to find out more.
And welcome skerneside. Don't go away now you've delurked! Have you had the traditional welcome skip / beverage of choice in the Bull yet? If not, there's one waiting on my tab.

Thank you so much for the welcome, Elnora Cornstalk. I feel as if I've finally ventured into the water and it's warmer than I thought it would be.

It took me a few years to dip in, but ever since I've found it very hard to get out (4 years ago this month - oh dear...!). Lovely place!

Thanks, GAC: I've goofled and there's a group right on my doorstep in Swansea. I might contact them. Bit torn: at the moment I am so busy with my own work and volunteering that I'm not sure I want to take on anything that requires fund-raising/feeling obliged to pledge more time and effort. Have recently started attending an older feminist group once a month. The joy of it is that I can just go, enjoy the talks and discussions, but I'm not asked to *do* /give anything.

Morganish, my advice would be to contact the Swansea club and ask if you can go along to one or two meetings, to find out if you and the club "suit one another". You never know, they might be working in just the fields that you are already involved with. I'm certain you'd be very welcome!
