Wherever, it's a fascinating story. And I'd never come across the practice before. A bit like a scapegoat, or even a whipping boy. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for this link, silverjenny. Mary Webb knew this story and 'sin-eating' features as part of the drama of 'Precious Bane' - the novel we're discussing as November's Book-of-the-Month.
