Dido here, opening the October thread.
Thank you all for the lovely things you've said about me (all true, of course. I /am/ gorgeous, and I know it).
Now can anyone here give me some advice? What do I have to do to be allowed up on the sofa?
Welcome Dido!
Belated Happy Birthday to Shy!
Lets get it over with....poo!!!

I do feel lucky, Lucy. Tired, but very lucky.
And of course Dido's poo was outside. Actually, they all have been so far, and we've only had three little wees inside too so far.
This afternoon I /swear/ she actually asked to go out, she went to the back door then came to me, whimpered just once and pawed my leg, then when I took her out immediately had a wee and set off back inside. I must be wrong, mustn't I? I know they're supposed to be intelligent dogs but she can't have learned that quickly?
YOu never know, Shy. C-in-C will pop up in a minute and mention the Dane that housetrained itslef in a day (or was it two ? Sorry Campbell!!)
How old is Dido ? Also depends what the breeder did, if anything...
dondy
Well done for opening up Dido.
B-dog sends a gentle slobbery kiss and T-cat sends a little head butt.
Sounds as though Dido could be breaking B-dog's potty training timetable and we thought she was fast. :O)
Fri, 01 Oct 2010 19:22 GMT, in reply to dondy b in message 6
She'll be 9 weeks on Sunday, dondy. The breeder said she had started to paper train them, so she will have had some idea that there are right places and wrong places, but I don't do paper training as such. Paper in half the crate overnight with bedding in the other half (until I'm sure they can last the night), otherwise it's outside or naughty.
She does seem awfully bright though, she's hardly had to be told anything more than twice.
btw funniest moment of yesterday, and a comment on my housekeeping standards, was when she was exploring the house and emerged from a corner with her face covered in cobweb. Ahem.

You're not alone, Shy. Lily got behind the garden room sofa when she first arrived and came out covered in cobwebby fluff.
I have no plans to go in for housewife of the year...

Dido sends kisses back, and hopes B-dog and T-cat won't mind that they're not so much gentle as nibbly at the moment.

Ah, here you all are, october already. Dido looks absolutely super intelligent - you can just see it in her bright wee sparkly eyes. And her shiny coat (why shiny coat should mean smart I have no idea but she does just seem to glow with healthysmartdogness). Never mind housetraining herself, she'll be setting up her own website and ordering people training books online soon I suspect.

Oooooo, ooooo, ooooo
I am so excited I am. OoooooOOOOOooooo
Just had a phone call and some piccies through the wonders of modern technology and guess what?????
We may have found a puppy!
About 6 weeks ago we rang a Dal breeder wot we know and she said she had a puppy but wasn't going to sell it to us as in her opinion she didn't think the puppy was good enough for us. I.e. she was very lightly marked and not really show quality, and, in her opinion quite ugly for a Dalmatian. As we have been "in" Dals for 20 years she, the breeder, said she thought we deserved a better quality puppy.
Anyhow, we got a phone call this morning to say that the ugly duckling has grown a bit; and is not quite so ugly, puppy is now 14 weeks old and looks better than the breeder originally thought and were we still interested?
YES!!!!!! She is not the most pretty of puppies if I have to be honest, but at 14 weeks she has now got to the gangly and uneven stage of puppyhood. Small body long legs and big head, next week she will have a big body and little legs.
She looks quite sweet really and reminds me of Oscar when he was that age.
Her name is Sophie, not a name we would have chosen. Apparently she is house trained now, lead trained and has had all her jabs. And we can see her in the flesh next weekend and if we really like her we can bring her home.
So Dog Clubbers keep all paws crossed for next Sunday 11th October.

Oooh, oooh, ooh, Dapply - know just how you feel!
You'll be visiting Sophie the same day we visit the litter we hope to get our puppy from, so I'll be thinking of you. Though we won't be able to bring ours home, because of our half-term holiday Can't wait to hear how you get on!
The post brought our doggy books this morning. I'm particularly enjoying Gwen Bailey's one on raising a confident, happy, well-trained puppy. It was interesting to read that puppies tend to be outgoing and fairly fearless at first, but can become cautious and nervous of new things at around 16 weeks. Dondy b, I wondered if Lily's reaction to the lorry(ies) might be linked to this natural fear kicking in? Anyway, the advice seemed to be much as given here - be patient, take things at your puppy's pace, when they start to exhibit nervous behaviour turn the experience into a positive one with a game or treat until they relax again - and that several positive experiences can help to overcome a negative one of a similar situation.
Am slightly concerned that we will be missing out on opportunities for socialization by not being able to take the puppy home until he's about 11 weeks old (and a week being a long period of a dog's puppyhood), but also feeling that the book is probably the counsel of perfection, and if we're purposeful about providing socialization opportunities when we do bring him home, he shouldn't be scarred for life...
The name game continues well here. So far I like Bertie and Zebedee. OH and son are lobbying for Enzo. Daughter is clearer on what she doesn't like than what she does. We will take our list of possibilities with us next weekend.
Shy, how did Dido do last night? Did she settle well again? Hope you're having a lovely time with her.

I know that it's nothing to do with me but when you said you were going to look at these puppies 'Monty' popped into my head.
Enzo is a great name, perfect to go around yelling in the middle of the night.
Send more pictures of Dido!

Not a suggestion but a genuine question. Wouldn't you (one) naturally tend to chose a French name for a poodle? I automatically chose Welsh names for Welsh springers and for the current resident Welsh terrier. Perhaps that just means I'm a bit anal?! Gwen

Hmmm, I don't know if they are auspicious signs or not.

What an interesting question Gwen. In my case, the answer is no, but that doesn't mean you are "anal"!
My main interaction with poodles was with my grandparents and they were all called "curly" (in Danish) - apt I guess, but certainly not french.
Another relative had a poodle too, but the name escapes me at the moment (weird, I am normally much, much better at remembering dogs' names than humans') - but it wasn't french either.

Lily the Yorkie was called Lily because her dam was Molly and I wanted to keep the ly ending to her name.
Lily suits her nature too
Sat, 02 Oct 2010 16:26 GMT, in reply to DeeKay Bee in message 21
They're black. And apparently although everyone associates poodles with France, they are most likely to originate from Germany (I gather the name comes from "Pudel" which is a German word). I think my family wouldn't be able to cope with Pierre, or Marcel, or Gaston, or... I do agree that Scottish or Welsh breeds naturally seem to suit indigenous names.
I tend to like names ending in "y" or "ie", and generally two syllables (though Zebedee is the exception).
The list remains open at least until Friday. Then for our sanity's sake we will have to start narrowing it down.
Jules - your list sound a bit like OH's attempt to choose a boy name when our child was due. His list was VERY long. Good job she was a girl...
BTW we guided the child towards Lily as our dog's name, to steer her away from some more outlandish ideas. Remember the "can I call it out loud in the park without dying of embarrassment " test...
dondy

Shy, how did Dido do last night? Did she settle well again? Hope you're having a lovely time with her.Â
Just the same as the first night Jules, except she slept longer. Bed at 10.30, cried for 10 minutes but not sounding really desperate, and then she didn't make a sound until 6.35. So the days may be exhausting but after a good night's sleep, who cares?
She really does seem to be amazingly bright, she's already getting the hang of walking on a lead, understands clearly what 'No' means, and only very occasionally forgets that while licks are welcome, teeth are not.
Next battle, convincing her that the handy-height crossbar on the frighteningly expensive oak coffee table is not in fact a perfectly designed puppy chew.

But it is. Just look at it from Dido's point of view. You'll just have to cover/hide it for about a year.
