as some of you may have read on lighting a candle, my s-i-l died on saturday leaving two daughters, one of whom was her carer aged just eighteen. The dad died 9 months ago. The home will have to be sold and the younger daughter find a small place of her own. One of the many problem facing our very very small family is that there are four cats in the home, beautiful creatures. I have spent all morning on the phone to various bodies trying to find official rehoming for them. we cannot take them...

Is the anyone on ml who can advise us on a course of action.

    The cats are
Pippa (f) tortoiseshell spayed aged 10,
Blue, (m) spayed tabby aged 8,
Blaze (m) spayed ginger striped aged 4,
Charlie (m) tabby unspayed 4 months

Oh what a sad situation Chalkfaced. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

Have you tried Cats Protection? I'm a former volunteer, used to help out in a rehoming shelter and also as a fosterer/carer.

Most branches are snowed under at the moment, but they may be able to put you on a waiting list. They will not put a healthy cat to sleep.

I don't know where you are in the country, but this site (Catchat) has links to local rescue charities

and this is a cat related messageboard (purrs in our hearts) where you could list the cats as urgently needing a home - many rescues also post here

If you are anywhere near West Yorkshire I /may/ be able to help directly. I can't take the cats myself, much as I'd love to, as I currently live with a friend in a rented house where we're not allowed pets. I've had to leave my beloved cats with my ex-partner whilst I get myself sorted, and hopefully will get a place of my own soon where I can regain custody of them.

But I do know lots of rescue orgs in West Yorks and could try to pull a few strings. One thing I must tell you is that unfortunately it is extremely unlikely the 4 will be rehomed together.

Whatever you do, please DO NOT advertise them on Freecycle or Gumtree or anything like that. You have no idea who will want them for what nefarious purposes. I won't go into details. A reputable rehoming org will carefully monitor and home-visit potential adopters to make sure they're suitable.

If you want to get in personal contact I'm sure we could find a way. Good luck, and if I can help any further don't hesitate to ask.

    Condolences again.

    Cat x

So sorry to read this, chalkfaced. Catwomyn's advice is spot-on. She's posted in ML Cat Club so you may get more help there. Wish I could help but already have two cats who don't get on.... Good luck.

Oh my goodness, chalkfaced, what a dreadful situation. Is there any chance at all that the girls could keep one or two of the cats, in that they would be such a comfort to them.

Nothing much to add to what Cat has said, except that you could also have a talk with the local vets and see what they can do to help.

Also, if possible, it could be an idea to give an indication of whereabouts in the country you are. You never, an MLer might be able to help - $quiggs recently took on a cat in Scotland.

sorry didn't think......Im in South Wales but would be willing to travel to deliver the cat/ cats. They are beautiful, strong, healthy creatures.
In answer to the question could the girls, our nieces, keep one or two...no not really. The one lives in a tiny 'no pets' flat in gloucestershire, the younger one ( who was the carer for her mum) will have to find a bedsit or such locally and at present is barely able to look after herself let alone a pet...

I can't have one or more of them as I am highly allergic to both cat hair and cat fleas ... I am covered in bites at the moment. Plus my OH is definitely not a cat person....

We are flailing around but have the cats on several waiting lists for rehoming and will just have to keep our fingers crossed... The many people I have spoken to today, from the RSPCA to little rescue centres have been very kind but are mostly in an impossible position ... It seems there are many people in this country who just don't get their cats neutered/ spayed and consequently there is a cat population explosion.

Oh chalkfaced, that's so desperately sad. Can't be of any more practical help than by bumping the thread, but I do hope you find a solution soon.

May I just echo what Cat says about not advertising them on Freecycle, in newspapers etc.? There are some very unpleasant people out there.

My sympathy to you and your family.

    Gx

Im another who has nothing practical to offer except to say that I hope that all the cats get loving homes soon and that your niece is able to get somewhere suitable for her as soon as possible. My heart goes out to them.

    Chalkfaced

I'm also very sorry - what an awful situation.

Keep trying with the usual rescue organisations. I know they're probably snowed under but, if you persevere and they realise that you really have a problem, I think you'll find that they can generally put you in touch with someone who can help in your circumstances.

I've had mixed fortunes with CPL/RSPCA with both homing (don't ask....) and looking for cats/kittens in recent times. I agree with those who've said don't advertise them on Freecycle type sites (my local Freecycle doesn't allow "livestock" ads anyway).

However, if you Google "Cats wanted" + your location, that should lead you to local small ads. You'd want to check each one out, of course, but it might be worth a try. I've got visitors

I have various family members in and around Newport. I think they're all catted, dogged and/or horsed out themselves but, if it helps, I will ask if they know of anyone suitable.

    Hang on in there.........

    Portia

Sorry - a cat trod on the "post" button.

I was about to say after "I've got visitors" - due any minute for a day or two but will try to dredge up sites I found useful/interesting if that would help.

    Hello chalkfaced

I can't be of any practical help, but you have my heartfelt sympathy, and actually I do know people in Yorkshire, so will put the word out with them. You never know.

    What a sad situation.

I am in France wish I could take them all but two already and a old doggie.

Cat Woman's advice as always is very sound.

So sad for both the girls and the cats.

    Thinking of you

Just sent off an e-mail to my niece, who is a publican in Wales.

She's got two big dogs herself, but she has all her customers - and she's a very good sales person.

If she needs more info, chalkface, you can contact me via Peet's place.

I'm afraid I can't offer anything in the way of advice, except to keep on asking rescue organisations. Would it be worth you asking further afield - these people

are a bit out of your way but do advertise and collect for food near where I am, it can't hurt to give them a call at least.

I can't take any more on, I'm afraid, but hope you can get them sorted out soon.

chalkers, I emailed a cat rescue chum last night to ask her advice.

She straight away seconded my suggestion of the purrs in our hearts website. If you scroll down there's a rescue & rehoming section, with a homes wanted board, and once you register to join you should post on that bit.

Good luck, and I'll keep my thinking hat on for you.

catwomyn, I have no business on a cat thread, but now I'm here I did notice a reference to your ex-partner. I hope you are not too much in need of rescue and tlc.

    Best wishes.

I will see what her indoors says about the torty and the ginger, but I don't hold out much hopes while I am stuck in here, not on site to monitor the situation and drive it forward ... what sort of time scale are you looking at?

so sorry I havent been back to the thread in a couple of days. Happily we have managed to rehome the ten year old....... a kind colleague with an elderly cat wanted company for him, and Pippa went yesterday and seemed very happy there. I will get updates on how she's doing next week.

As to the question on timescale ..I am hoping that they can all go within 6 weeks or so, at the latest by the new year, so that OH's niece can be free to look for a little place to live.

As I have said, their details are down with the few rescue centres that still have their books open. One seemed hopeful of rehoming the kitten within a couple of months.

It's been a tough week here at Chalk towers. I am so grateful to the ML friends who have taken the time out of their busy worlds to get involved in this, however briefly. x

Glad to hear that it's "one down, three to go" Chalkers.

I had anticipated the kitten would be easier to home than the adults, but am v glad the eldest has found a home, as shelters often find it difficult to home more 'mature' cats.

If you get absolutely desperate nearer the crunch time, get back to me and I'll try my absolute damnedest to help. Not sure how, but I will.

Chalkers - I am so sorry to hear what has happened to your nieces.

Bumping this thread in the hope that you find homes for the two middle cats, and that younger niece soon finds somewhere suitable to live.
