Is anyone interested in joining in with a support group for people who have family members with a longstanding ED? My own involvement is as stepmother to an adult ED sufferer who still lives with us whilst simultaneously hating us.....

Yes, a support group would be very helpful to me. I have a daughter with a long-standing eating disorder and it is hell to live through on a daily basis. She has been into an eating disorders unit but this did very little to help. Unless you have a family member or someone close with this type of illness it is difficult to understand the constant stress and worry of dealing with low potassium effects and the constant fear that they could lose them at any time. There is a total dearth of support groups so the carers are all too often left without any advice or support.

It is indeed a good idea to set up such a group.

It is not something that directly involves me, though I was rather concerned about daughter going towards anorexia in her teens (thankfully, things stabilised). I have a friend who has twin girls (now early 20s) who are both anorexic (one twin led the other towards it). It hardly bears thinking about how hard this has been for the mum.

I have a related question: A friend was asking for any advice the other day as her daughter (17) is eating too much (seems to be comfort eating, related to final year at school). Friend is the most well-balanced and good-sense person I know, and doesn't want to make comments to daughter that might make this worse in any way. The family already have a very well-balanced diet, and daughter does load of exercise (football) - but the worry is of getting into vicious circle of being overweight and having a poorer self-image.

    Rachel & Bette

Good to see your replies, and although I don't have the expertise to produce the impressive links that other have done on other discussion threads, I do believe a support network could be helpful.

There are many many websites that give lots of information but all of them (rightly) conclude that EDs are best confronted at an early stage. Sound advice, but for those of us who over 10 years down the line find that the problems haven't gone away - just when you think things can't get worse, they do! - it is good to talk to people who know the sort of dramas we encounter on a daily basis.

I'm bumping this thead up, because I think it /does/ have a place in TVH, and I believe that many people that would be interested have missed it first time.

Thanks Bette, I was prepared for this to be a slow burner as it is a subject that can be quite painful to talk about for family members. The tragedy is that sufferers too often assert that they are 'in control' while clearly being nothing of the sort. Famous last words for too many I fear. But since the sad death of Isabelle Caro has been reported recently, it may be timely to raise this again.
