A Lawson Cypress is soon to be felled in a shady corner of my back garden as it has outgrown the available space. The trunk is such a lovely shade of reddish brown that I want to keep a few feet of it as a stump.

Does anyone have any creative ideas as to what I could do with it?

    Oodles smiley - smiley

    - use as a support to grow something gorgeous over which will show the wood's colour through it

    - have the tree-feller level the top, then you smooth it, sand it, oil it (imo, don't varnish but teak-oil it) and use as a table for your G&T on summer evenings

    - level and oil the top and mark it out into 64 squares (is it 64?) and then use a fine brush and dark colouring/ ink/ paint to do alternate ones and use it as a chess table on long lazy summer afternoons. Or a backgammon table, for choice, but I know some misguided souls prefer chess.

    Etc., etc...

Scoop out the top of the remaining part and plant in it.

First you will need to kill the stump or the tree will re-grow, drill some holes down into the top of the stump and pour neat roundup stump killer down the holes.

Then you could plant a Clematis and a rose to clamber over it.

Our neighbour had a tree taken down and had a stump of about six feet left. He got one of those people who do chainsaw carving in and had three figures carved in to the stump - an owl, a squirrel and something else - so that they stand out from the trunk (if you see what I mean).
