Hello and welcome, one and all! The MFC is the place to be if you want to talk about healthy living! That can involve food and losing weight, doing exercise to keep fit or the relationship between body and mind - we tend to talk about all kinds of things here and offer amazing support. Please do feel free to join in the discussions.

The only rule we have is not to mention RL weights or sizes, as one person's goal may be another's starting point. We aim to be as supportive and encouraging as we can be, whilst acknowledging that our body image can be a very sensitive area.

    Other related threads are:
GEm's Gym (if you need advice or incentives about exercise)

Katy's Cookbook (if you need inspiration on how to eat healthily)

The Rota Thread (where we take it in turns to open a new thread each week as we tend to rabbit on a fair amount over a week!)

We need volunteers for next week and the first weeks in January!

I found this rhyme today, which I think probably summarises our philosophies quite well!
    "The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
    Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
    If only you are willing
    Your mind they'll ease
    Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling."
~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

A really lovely start to a new week Lost .... thanks.

I think not to worry too much if this thread rolls over for the next week or two ...... but I leave others to decide if they want to open up. I am very wooly headed at the moment so won't volunteer. I've just been surprised at this new thread and checked my phone to know which day of the week it is! :0)

Thanks for opening Lost, love that pome!

What a day I have had, while clearing the car this morning my Sis rung. Mother (93) was taken to hospital at 04.30 with chest pains. She must have been in a lot of pain to call anyone at that time of the morning. She is being kept in, but I haven't been able to get through to the hospital yet.

On the news this morning there was a report that a young mother had been found dead in her home with her two youngest children. YP went out with her for a while a few years ago. Tests are being done to ascertain cause of death. I'm feeling somewhat shellshocked at the moment.

I finally managed to get through to the hospital, just after the change of shift, so the nurses did not know too much. Things are not too bad and they were confident Mother would be out before Christmas - though they didn't tell me what they had tested for and what the results showed. I was told, however, that I had no cause to worry at the moment.

I will try to take their advice on board!

Lost, I hope this doesn't offend you. Yesterday I told myself that I mustn't "do a Lost" and worry about things I cannot change. Mother is in the best hands - she is in Addenbrookes, she is in the best place for her. My Sis and my Bro are within fairly easy reach of her, I'm the only one at the other end of the country. I will ring again after 10am.

I am not working again until Christmas Eve, but can't get my head around what I should be doing today. It all seems artificial when I remember (M and little P&I, see message 3 above)

No, not offended, Fire-Pig. "Doing a Lost" is pretty much synonymous with what NOT to do, huh?!

Just back from swimming, still trying to keep a normal routine up as much as possible. Coffee and grapes for a reward. Vegetable soup for lunch simmering... at least that will be warmer than yesterday's salad. It's so cold here!

Well done everyone for keeping on keeping on ... and thanks for those stars/snow Ana :0) I saw your star on last week's thread and was keeping a look out for you to make sure you found us here.

I'm being v careful to only eat small and well as I'm obvioiusly still pretty immobile with my knee, but it's five days now since I had the op and the knee swelliing is going down slowly. I've just got permission to take the quite strong anti-inflammatory meds I had before the op and hopefully that will speed up better movement in the joint. I long to be able to bend it properly but I'm not allowed to do that til well into January when I am due to see the surgeon again. (I can't at the moment anyhow because of the swelling above the joint)

Guzzi are you in Guernsey on holiday? Sorry if I haven't been paying attention :0)

Hello all, reporting in with a 1.75lb gain this week, due to a weekend of entertaining and enjoying not only the celery sticks but all the dips! There were some glasses of wine in there too but I felt I deserved them - especially as we had OH's teenager and also OH's eldest son with his two little girls, the son's girlfriend and her two little boys all staying with us on Saturday night! That's six small children (under 6), a teenager and four adults in my three bedroomed house!

I intend to relax and enjoy Christmas without worrying too much about my weight. I have a feeling the girls will have rotten coughs and colds for Christmas as they're already starting, and I don't think they'll be gone by the weekend but hey ho, there'll be plenty to take theirs minds off it!

KOKO everyone, I hope you all manage to enjoy whatever you have planned for the festive season.

I'm having a remarkably easy time of it this festive season as we're not being particularly festive! We did have a big family meal on Monday evening, but the daughter and family in whose honour the meal was planned were unable to travel from Lancashire (boo, sad), so once that was over we were able to just get back to regular sensible eating. We're spending christmas day at another daughter's and it's beginning to look as if my sister won't be making the trip from the midlands either, so absolutely no need to make festive puddings. It feels very quiet and relaxed. Slightly odd not to be frantically rushing round three days before Christmas.

Hope all others with spoiled plans are coping.

Have a happy Christmas everyone. xxx

First the good news - Mother can be discharged from hospital today - that is if anyone can get there to collect her! I haven't been able to raise either Sis or Bro this morning, both are far nearer than me.

I'm still in a state of mental turmoil, but trying to remember good times. Laura, as ever, has been immensely helpful in Peet's.

I'm going to make mince pies this afternoon, mine used to be famous in Borneo! I made several hundred each year for our massive Open House on Christmas Day, that was a very different life.

I hope that everyone enjoys Christmas even if it is not what they originally planned.

Does Laura know that Peet has run out the new version of the script ... I think she used it before.

Has the tinsel already gone, Birdy? I'm getting increasingly confused by all the different names!!

Reporting a bizarre 3lb loss this week. After weeks of not shifting more than half a pound up or down, I can't really account for this, though it's very welcome (especially immediately prior to going away next week!) I am still 9lbs off my target weight, but am now only 2lbs off my ideal 'Christmas weight', which is a better position than I looked to be in this time last week. Quite odd.

Tomorrow we are out for the special birthday lunch for my Dad. 4 courses of sheer heaven provided by the most wonderful restaurant I know... I will doubtless regain the 3lbs just from that meal alone... but I will savour every mouthful!

Lost - I think I have your missing 3 lbs - at least that what the scales told me last night!

Not worrying about it until after Boxing Day - and then I will take myself in hand. I consider 3 lb an oscillation rather than a yo yo, so not too terrible.

Fire-Pig Addenbrookes is such a good hospital - I think all our family have been in there at some time or other. I hope mother enjoys Christmas at home, and you don't worry too much.

When will I ever learn? Last night a large tin of Roses Chocolates had turned up in the house. You know the size, you've walked past them in the supermarket. As I helped myself, as one does, I said that I thought I preferred Quality Street to Roses. Guess what has just appeared? I KNOW he wants to help me but ... there is a box of real Belgian Chocolates patiently waiting for Christmas. I don't need other chocolates but ....

It's a tricky time of year that's for sure :0))

We have a large box of Quality Street waiting to be opened ...... when we get to the stage where OH and I are on our own again after Christmas I am going to remove any of my favourites that are still there and get OH to do the same and we will bin the rest.

Fortunately at Christmas we always put sweets out on a plate and pass it round and so the temptation of really pigging is removed.

For all those who are in trepidation about Christmas and your diet may I offer the following thoughts

    1) Christmas is not the whole month of December it is two - two and a half days starting Christmas Eve night and ending Boxing Day night.

    2) Christmas food can be healthy - lean poultry, veggies and fruit and nuts. If you fill up on the healthy stuff and just have a taste of the unhealthy stuff then you'll feel much better

    3) Chocolate does not have to be eaten in the next week - as far as I am aware it will keep pretty much indefinitely (well till next Christmas at least!) so it doesn't have to all be eaten now

    4) Exercise over Christmas can be quite sociable - long walks with the family, going for a run together, playing on Wii etc. and can aid digestion too. Calories used don't turn to fat

    5) Treats are only treats if they are occaisonal - too much and they stop being a treat or even pleasant. Our bodies aren't built to cope with hyge amounts of rich food

    and finally ....

New Years Eve is just around the corner. If you don't overdo the rich food and booze you'll be the one with glowing skin and shiny hair, bright eyes and slipping easily into that lovely new dress you bought. What more incentive do you need to say no to that other helping of pudding?

and failing all that motivating you there's always the gym open on Boxing Day!!!!!!

Have a happy and healthy Christmas everyone

Balance is the key to it all... two days' indulgence is one thing; letting go of good habits indefinitely something else altogether. It is not compulsory to eat loads, no matter what anyone says!

I made it to the gym yesterday, GEm, after a hectic week and felt much better for it!!

well done you Lost. I went too despite being up to my ears with jobs to do and unplugged my brain and ran for 35 minutes on the treadmill. Know what? Like you I felt much calmer and in control afterwards. They say energy breeds energy and it certainly feels like it.

I won't make it in there today but I will certainly be in there on Boxing Day running off my Christmas meal. Chez nous it's venison as no-one likes turkey and there'll be roast potatoes done in goose fat.

I'm secretly hoping that Father Christmas has bought me some new gym gear - I've lost so much weight this year that mine looks rather clownish at the moment. Oh and a new dressing gown as mine is about 4 sizes too big and I keep tripping over it on the stairs

I'm in need of some Christmas support I'm afraid. I'm finding things very difficult at the moment, and being at my mum's for Christmas is not helping. Everything in my life seems to be imploding and I feel very out of control. Please point your mustardy eyes in my direction when you can and I will think of them while resisting attempting to eat the blues away (which of course makes the blues worse, but I NEVER learn this!). I will also be thinking of you and wishing you a lovely few days. I'll try and get on here when I can.

I wonder if there are healthy/er options in the house for you to enjoy if you feel the need to have food? Is there a bowl of fruit to help yourself from? Are you on your own with your mum? Here the sun shone all day and the snow dazzled. A quiet day in now, and abstemiousness after delicious but rich food yesterday. All my cooking experiments, to re-create the Christmas dinner we might have had in another country, if the flight hadn't been cancelled, worked a treat.

Are you prepared to tell us what sort of food you had Ana? It sounds a good idea trying to recreate that rather than carry on as if nothing had happened. I always found turkey etc too much in the Tropics but was expected to produce it.

We held Open House on Christmas Day for OH's official contacts as well as our friends, anything up to 300 callers. We had the local Hilton to do some of the catering, I would see people sitting down to a full traditional British Christmas Dinner at 10.30 am. (Fire-Pig shakes her head yet again at the memory!) I would make Mince Pies, Christmas Cakes and Shortbread for what seemed like months beforehand. It was another life!

In this life this year, I am trying to be slightly restrained while still enjoying myself and the family.

    Good wishes to all

About to set forth on the great adventure to Brussels. Christmas eating not exactly restrained (bread and cheese have featured in my diet... I try to do without these most of the time these days, but have found it hard to resist these past two days!) Other than that, though, I've eaten fairly sensibly.

Now, though, it will be meals out for a week and I'll have to choose wisely. It's not that that is impossible, just you have to be judicious at all times. Continental breakfasts tend to feature bread quite a lot, and when you're talking and lingering over meals with family, that's when I tend to keep reaching out for food almost without realising it... Keep your beady eyes on me this week and I'm sure I'll do well!

(Weather not great here, but hey... we'll give it a go and see what transpires...)

Start with a shot of iced vodka with a twist of lemon peel.
    Borscht.
Smoked trout with sour cream and "caviar" on celery sticks.
Roast guinea fowl. Baked buttered buckwheat. Dried morel mushroom sauce. Sprouts, chestnut stuffing, gravy etc etc.
    Tutti frutti ice cream bombe.
No room for mince pies and cheese......

As you can tell, not *all* from the holiday country.

Enjoy Brussels, Lost, and good wishes to everyone here.

Not so far north, sparkles ......
And I missed a Bloomsbury Group exhibition and one of Gustave Vigeland. The saddest of all, as whenever I do get there, they won't be there again.

No, sadly not Ana ... just a bit of judicious googling!

Our DD2 is here with us ... leek and parmesan and chestnut mushroom rissotto for our evening meal. I was hoping for open prawn sandwiches as I'm a bit f'lup but she chose the rissotto.

    Hoping everyone is fine ....

Very good vegetable stir fry this evening, which must have been good for us! It had carrots, leeks, celery, yellow pepper and mushrooms - so there was my five in one meal!

I was back in work today, so better than yesterday, but we still have the excellent Belgian Chocolates, but we only have one each a day!

    Hope all are well

We were laughing that some people only ever have 5 a day on Christmas Day ... the only day of the year when they eat fruit and veg!
