Theme: Landscapes
Those of us who post in the photo thread in The Bull have decided to open a new monthly thread in The Village Hall for people to post their photos. Each month, a new thread will be opened dedicated to a particular theme.
We hope to keep the themes fairly general so as not to disadvantage those who may not be able to manage certain things - coastal, or farming for example.
Like the thread in The Bull, it’s not meant to be a competition and we don’t care if you use a £50 point and click, a camera on your mobile, or a £2000 DSLR and if you want it, constructive criticism or advice will always be there if you want it.
The current Bull photo thread can be found here:
And there is a Techy Photo Thread here:
As it says above, this months theme is Landscapes. What are landscapes? Most people think of rolling green fields or rugged mountain scenes. How about urban landscapes? City views can be just as impressive as pictures of countryside.
So – I hereby declare the January Photo Thread (Landscapes) open.
I'll start off with these two
Would this count?
Certainly... great photo.
Thank you. It's the River Shannon, in Ireland - every year, three of us hire a cruiser and tootle up and down. We'd pulled into some reeds, so they could do a bit of fishing, and I took the shot through my cabin window - hence the angle, which would have been impossible any other way.
Thanks for setting this up - it's going to be great fun!

I only just saw mention of this new project on the photo thread in the Bull, great idea! I see some lovely photos have been posted already.
Here's one of mine from years ago, so long that I didn't have a digital camera back then so this is a scanned print that I loaded to photobucket. Apologies in advance for the loss of quality.
It's a shot of Kata Tjuta, not far from Uluru/Ayers Rock in Australia's red centre. We were lucky enough to see the desert in bloom.
I think I may have posted this before, if so apologies, but I'll offer this 'wirescape' as my bookmark.

Lake District
Great thread.
Come on you lurkers - it's not a competition.
Just share with everyone..
Lovely photos all.
Where in the Lake District is yours Scooby?
Here's an Autumnal Lake District shot - looking to Blencathra from Gowbarrow.

This is the view from my kitchen window
and this is a view of the River Spey
Yep - so many lovely shots in here.
Now then BAM, was it you that asked about the memorial bench at Ullswater?
I can't give you a location for that shot other than it was after I'd left Ullswater to head back to Stavely.
So it could be either Ullswater or Windermere.
I do recall I pulled over onto a gravelpatch to see if there were any likely views.
Do you live in those parts?
Yep that was me - I have think the memorial bench was Glenridding, at the Southern end of Ullswater. We have a holiday place in Cumbria and aim to spend as much time there as possible. Although it's outside the National Park, we are only 10 mins from Ullswater.
Did you try the beer hall at Staveley? A fave place of ours.
I certainly did try the beer BAM - there was a festival in the village brewery the 3 days we were there.
And this one was recommended (deservedly too for both beer and food) by Gruney who is now posting here
Apologies for digressing.
And now I'm off to sample the local brew!
Happy posting folks!
Ooh we have been to the last few festivals there - wonder if our paths crossed.
We have tried the Watermill at Ings (not eaten tho) - prob prefer Beer hall overall. Can recommend the veggie chili from Wilfs.
Here's another brewery van -
When you are back in the are, can recommend The Mardale Inn at Bampton for the beer, unless there has been a party the night before! Food reasonable there.
Or for excellent beer & fine dining The Yanwath Gate (Yat).

Wow, great photos so far.
I was going to use this thread as a stimulus to do some photography even when the great outdoors wasn't very enticing, but now realise that it would be good to press on with the blog. Anyway, I took a fewlandscapes over Xmas, so here are a couple thatI have stolen from a couple of slideshows that 'm in the process of posting on the other thread. The first one's an urban landscape for Septic:
and a slightly more rural one:
A couple of mine. The first taken today, in West Yorkshire. Second was 2009 in Clackmannanshire, Central Scotland.

Hi cat,
Lovely to see you here (and your photos :- ) ). Saw your other thread and nearly said to post your photos here or in the Bull!
I guess you know there's also a thread in the Bull where you can post any photos any time. There's nearly always someone around to be enthusiastic, so a nice place to share photos.

I have frequently thought that the very place for landscapes is the Clent Hills.
The clouds look close enough to touch, full of rain for someone!
This one looks as though you'd expect Don Quixote and Sancho Panza to trot through the gap. I think it's the tree, but it's Clent again.

Lovely ones you two.
Another one from me. The difference between the ones I've seen so far and mine is that you've got nice undulating land. It's as flat as a pancake here!

Flat landscapes can offer lovely skies c_h_p. You've captured that farmland scene beautifully.

Thank you Auntie C.
I just love the hills and valleys and there's no way I can find them here. Or not near us at least!
How about this one I took on the island of Meedhupparu in the Maldives quite a while ago now. It certainly takes away some of the cold we're experiencing just now.....
I know it's a holiday photo............but it's still a landscape.....

Just spotted this, great idea to have themes - I find the original thread a bit much to keep up with.
Lovely stuff from all, but my vote goes to Rodger's beach so far! If only.....
I'm on the netbook so can only get at what's on photobucket, so here's a recent one
and one from a while ago
An excellent first couple of days - and it's nice to see some new names posting their pics....
Two out of my archive...
Mmmm, yes I could escape quite happily to that beach just now!
I like the contrast of your 2 pics ermintrude - is that your house in the second one?!

No A-M
It's a pair (I think) of workers' cottages on the Kingston Lacy estate. There's a few like that dotted around.
Thank you for opening up this thread Septic and some truly glorious landscapes already - from the dramatic to the muted - but all lovely.
This might go horribly wrong as I am trying to move from Photobucket which I don't really like to Flickr (I already have a Flickr account and have finally persuaded it to let me have another one) and am hoping this will be a bit more familiar. But I might have tied my privacy settings too tightly.
Anyway, two lanscapes from my summer travels in the US West. One from Arches National Park and the other from Zion. Probably obvious which is which... : )

Oooh, excellent! I was hoping 'landscapes' would entice erms out of the woodwork (hopefully Willywoanty, too). And welcome to Rodger.
For those as don't know, there's also a photo thread where 'anything goes' in the Bull:

Hi Haysie. I couldn't access your photos. If there's a way of doing so, can someone advise? It might just be that I'm a bit thick.

Haysie, you have managed to tie up your privacy settings; I get the login prompt.
Loads of excellent and fascinating pictures here already; Septic, I've had quite a few attempts at taking the first one of your latest set, and it can only be improved by getting a train in the photograph IMO. (that zigzag line along the cliff top is a narrow gauge railway!)
I really must look out some later this evening.

Hi Auntie and Ex Illuminated TD
Have now spent more time doing battle with the settings and i think that the pics should be available now. Sorry for the false start.

Fantastic Haysie - those National Parks in the US west are amazing.
I've just posted some landscapes on the other thread - I posted them there because it's a whole slideshow, but here's the link if anyone's interested:
It is indeed a railway XTD - Groudle Glen (next door neighbour is a volunteer on it)

Wow Haysie. Your pics shook me to the core (more than I can say about tonight's over hyped episode).
Thank you Auntie and FAB - the parks in the West are something else. I am now a fully signed up member of the "Utah Rocks" fan club (and if I had a rock from Utah handy I would not have been dropping it on Nigel, humph, etc etc)
My internet connection is on a go-slow, so I can't access Haysie's pics, it keeps timing out. Will have a look soon, hopefully.
But I've been on another walk today, and have uploaded the pics. There's a few landscapes in this album:
And a series of pics of a windfarm in this album:

Hi chp, I remember seeingthat before. I've just posted on the other thread that I don't know why a particular photo 'works'. the same is true about your photo, but it does :- )
Lovely landscapes Cat! I particularly liked 5 and 6 of Ovenden Moor - they made me want to scramble into your landscape - and I see what FAB means with "simon says" about the windfarm. : ) Were these from your New Year's Day hike? I noticed you were thinking of one but I don't know if you went?
chp - aside from that fact that your pic is a delightful reminder of sunny, summery times, it absolutely makes me want to smile. I don't know if I'm just taking a hint from the chain, but I think it's just a superbly pleasing pic.
