After months of sign in problems returned to find there had been a tsunami on the R4 message boards, and then learned for a closed discussion by Joe K that Anna has been sacked. Am I dreaming in an alternative reality or what? That'll teach me to buy cheap ersatz Bailey's at Aldi!

    Help please.

I think you will find them in The Bull, habbukski.

Welcome anyway; have a free drink on me of whatever you fancy when the sun is over the yard-arm. The Village Hall is for various clubs and monthly support groups. So a quick message in The Bull to say you have arrived will get a faster response

I don't see many (if any) of the WOM regulars here but they were organising their own boards elsewhere. You might find some links on some of the final threads:

Well, I had a quick trawl around, but didnt find any refugees from any of the R4's set of closed boards. Having been away for two months plus, I did not even hear the official excuses for closure, money and falling use I presume; but us customers have a right know don't we?

When we are obligate payers, and the Ö÷²¥´óÐã a de facto monopoly don't they have an obligation to treat us with respect and respond to us promptly, and recognise our needs and desires and make sure that not only do they not drift in arrogance and complacency, but do not appear to be so behaving.

MBs gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people, some bed bound, some sick, so isolated or excilled, some young and exuberant, from generalists to specialists. WOM was nearly aways a delight, sometimes hilarious, sometimes erudite, always well mannered. How are any of us served by its closure, when there are still £millions in the kitty for silly TV pathetic radio plays and monstrously overpaid 'celeb' presenters?

In a market economy, we can only express our opinions immediately by non-buying, arrogant companies with declining respect for their customers and poor and slow service, ultimately fail through declining sales. The Ö÷²¥´óÐã is a special case, we have by law to purchase licences, and how ever slow and careless they are about listener's legitimate concerns, the department that collects the money responds instantly with ferret like determination. Though it also has the habit of ignoring all responses whether by email or letter. These are the symptoms of the old eastern block dictatorships, here in the uk we do not usually hang people from lamposts, or have midnight arrests and show trials, for those who will not toe the party line and shut up, but the uk has its methods and just denies people a platform, fiddles the statistics, and juggernauts over all.

As the old court jesters had a special licence to tease and insult the king, or in modern parlance to speak truth to power, organisations that are effectively monopolies need to allow some space for disappointed and angry punters to let off steam; and to learn to really listen.

When the Science Board went that was a great loss, it was a learning arena, and the obsessed, the naive and the cranky also got space to share with the experts and professionals, but now all the comment boards apart from the Archers have gone, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã will be increasingly separated from fair comment and expression of the actual experience of general users. Not only are they in the London Bubble, but within a bunker inside it. It is societally unhealthly for the truth to be suppressed.

Like statistics in the Blair years, or all the chicanery about 'prudence', in Brownonomics, sooner or later the reality hits the fan. Then we have a mega-crisis as the ship of state tries to u turn mid course. If the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is to flourish it will have to get its senior execs out of the fancy restaurants and chauffered cars, going to endless meetings with the like-minded and into a real dialogue with us, the listeners and viewers, who have ordinary lives and incomes, the majority, in short, who have real views and needs, experiences and opinions, who are increasing resenting being managered for their own good by the overpaid, over privileged, and arrogant, who are such running organisations for their own personal gain.

We pay the wages, and like all payers of pipers, we will ultimately call the tune.
