    Hello ML Collective of Experience

This is happening to my mother, she is taking all the medical advice, I'm just wondering if anyone else has experience and would be willing to share - just personal anecdotes and tips rather than medical expertise.

My mother has been unwell on and off for a couple of years, but ended with a gall bladder removal in April, during the operation they found that her bile duct was obstructed and she was allowed home with a drain (for the bile). A week or so ago she went back to the hospital and had dye injected through the drain and some sort of radiography thing that confirmed that the bile duct was obstructed, though there are no stones involved and although obstructed wasn't closed and they clamped the drain and said that if she felt unwell she should take the clamp off - she's been OK. Now she's to have an ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) and insertion of a stent - probably metal rather than plastic.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Any tips on what she'll need after this? What should she eat (no info from hospital)? Anything else I should know to support her properly?

Card behind bar in the Bull for you, big pot of tea and endless cafetiere plus afternoon tea scones and cake here in the VH

Thanks in advance for any info

    Gleam

    Hello Gleam,

I'm afraid I don't know anything about this sort of complication, I hope it is sorted successfully.

I do know that after gall bladder removal some people can eat anything they like, some have to make sure that they don't eat very fatty foods and some have to follow a low fat diet.

    (The fat causes diarrhoea.)

Sorry I've not much help to offer but at least it's a bump.

    :¬)

Gleamingheels, I'm sure that your Mother will find the stent a big help. Someone close to me had a similar proceedure, and experienced a great improvement.

Thanks Flea and Dirigibles - I hope the stent does sort her out, we've had the various advice over food and it does seem to be whatever suits the individual rather than any finite rules, I think this is what she's finding frustrating, there are just so many unknowns. Ah well, no-one ever said medicine was an exact science....

Gleamingheels, I think that stents are terribly clever, and of great value in many areas of medicine, resulting in hugely improved quality of life.
If you Google 'bile duct stent diet' you will find some advice about avoiding fats, etc.
I hope it all goes well for your Mother.

Thanks Dirigibles - I have Googled fairly extensively - my Mother has been avoiding fats ever since the problem started, in fact she's very strict with herself from fear of previous pain returning. I guess she'll just continue as she is, there was also some suggestion that she might not be absorbing the full nutritional value from food, that was from the hospital staff, but I have found very little info on that - so I guess she just sticks to eating healthily, plus a little of what she fancies that's not so healthy( but still lower in fat) and see how it goes

    Thanks again

    Gleam
