I have just been prescribed Orlistat for three months, and am wondering whether I should have protested more and said I was already losing weight.

Has anyone any experiences of taking it, or any advice?

    Hi F-P

    Well it works.

I was prescribed orlistat approx 3 years ago. I think it stops your body absorbing fat and fast tracks it thru your body. Problem is I found that this can be pretty instantaneous.

Please, beware. I never realised how much fat some foods contained. I ate an eccles cake - hmm wouldnt like to do that again. Mind you, that is prob why I was so overweight in the first place.

I found it was effective in kick starting weight loss and soon grasped the concept that I should eat foods containing less fat and exercise more. So from that point of view it was a success.

I widh you well and hope you feel loads better soon. Good luck and I hope you find it helps. I just wanted to let you know that it is pretty instantaneous - the fat elimination process of orlistat, that is.

I agree with pigsrlovely. I took it nearly two years ago but did nothing to change my diet/lifestyle. So the outcome was extreme discomfort, urgent need for the toilet and no weight loss.

Earlier this year I started taking it again along side joining Slimming World and taking up running. Undoubtedly you will lose weight without Orlistat (Xenical) doing this anyway, but it does become a more positive, 'faster track' experience. I think it removes about 40% of the fat your body would normally absorb. If you happen to eat a chippy tea or a load of biscuits you will lose a lot of fat but you will also be taking on a lot of fat. So it's not in any way fool proof to allow you to eat what you want.

I don't intend to take it for much longer but after losing two stone since May and hopefully another stone by Christmas (and be at my target), it's a great kick start to looking and feeling better, so I'd stick with it for now.

Thanks pigrlovely and BlueLagoon. At the moment I am still wondering whether to take it or not. I haven't been able to collect the prescription yet. I am going to have a week without it and see what I lose, trying to follow a very low fat diet and increase my exercise levels. That should prepare my body for it, if I decide to take it.

Hi fire-pig - just checking in to see if you've cashed in the prescription or still holding off. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it if you do try it. Or anyone else come to that!

Hi BlueLagoon, I've collected the prescription and read all the blurb - but not taken any! I want to see what I can lose without it. I am being strict with myself about going low fat and not snacking. Why don't you join us in MFC, that is helping me a lot.

This year we got small packets of chocolate raisins for Hallowe'en visitors and all went other years we have had large tins of Quality Street, or similar, and always had leftovers. Chocolate has been my downfall, but I had already sworn off that for October and November. The only chocolate I had in October were in two desserts when out and there was very little choice.

Thanks Fire-Pig I will pop into the MFC soon. I've just had a massive 'fry up' but according to Slimming World it was perfectly acceptable &healthy. I used a dry fry spray for eggs. mushrooms, tomatoes and added some beans. I feel completely full up! The good thing is it will stop me snacking later. Chocolate is also my downfall & biscuits.

I will have my 4 weekly weigh in at the doctors this week to check the Orlistat progress. So far every time I've been there's a good loss. Along with S'World and my running I'm close to target weight. I can't believe I will have a Christmas actually feeling good about myself and not throwing myself into the choc fest! Have you taken the plunge yet or still losing weight alone? Good for you if you are.

I am still losing weight by myself, slowly but some every week. I am still some way from my target - if the target is to have a BMI of 25! I would be happy with a weight slightly higher than that. I have cut my fat intake as far as I can, though yesterday's dinner was braised lamb shanks so there would have been some fat in with that. I am training myself to cut the fat off meat, which I never did before.

I may reconsider taking the Orlistat later but not at the moment!

I have a Lakeland Frypan Liner - I think that's what it's called. You don't need any fat with that and it works well.

Losing weight slowly is the key. I lost quite a lot of weight recently and I would lose a pound one week, half the next, never losing more than two pounds in any week over a year. My friend on the otherhand, lost six, five, four pounds regularly. We both exercised. Me on bike and swimming she walked over 40 miles a week pushing her two year old in her pram. When her toddler wouldnt sit in the pram she put on weight just as fast as she lost it. Consequently it all went back on and she is back on track and losing it again.

Apart from a few pounds I have managed to keep it off.

I dont think any one way, system or method suits all. Its not easy and I found that a life time of making the wrong choices and eating way too much of them, can be overcome but it is certainly a struggle most of the time.

Dont beat yourself up over eating lamb. Its high sugar, processed foods that arent that good for you imo. I find that pure foods suit me better. So I tend not to open tins, have sauces or other bits and bobs and go for cereals, fruit and white meats. I struggle and am naughty. I could eat my body weight in chocolate every day but thankfully am not rich enough so thats probably a good thing.

There is an healthy eating thread that is really useful and really supportive. I dont know if you have seen it but the people who post on there are really nice.
