I have an admission date of 12th December for an urgent but not life threatening Hysterectomy.

Problem is 10 days ago I came down with a pretty bad viral cold/upper respiratory infection. Tenacious little boooger is now causing a persistent tickly cough (am asthmatic) as well as ear/throat implications and solid sinuses.

Earlier this year I had a similar feeling bug that took over three months to pass through the system.

So, when do I need to report an infection to the hospital?

What is likely to happen? I appreciate the infection spread, anaesthesia and of course constant coughing following hyster/repair implications.

But will I get a short re-admit date or go to the back of the consultants 5 month ish list?

I am getting seriously concerned (as well as being seriously cream crackered and hacked orff). I have made pretty major life changes for the coming months

Talk about T T T T timing! If I knew who it was I'd be taking a contract out on whoever sneezed this one at me.

Get down to your Drs asap and explain the situation - they should give you something for it under the circumstances.

Dad had a major op postponed late Sept due to a minor infection. he came down with a cold/sore throat a week before re-admittance and went to the Drs who gave him a course of antibiotics which he finished on the day of admission. He had surgery Mon.

If you go in and they send you home somewhere is some piece of govt guidance there is a statement that you should be readmitted within 28 days. didn't happen above tho' so I'm not sure how much its monitored (and therefore adhered to by the hosp)

    Good luck

    Jane

Oh dear ,BYT, what bad luck. I too think you should go and see your GP and just ask if anything can be done to clear up your symptoms. The coughing in particular would be a big problem post hysterectomy and I know how these tickly coughs are dragging on at the moment, I think I'm just about over the one I've had since the week before half term. As an asthmatic I imagine you have inhalers, are they helping at all? The doc might think a short course of steroids will help.

    Good luck with everything!

BYT I was going to say pretty much what Jane said, ask your doctor now, don't wait to see what happens, and hopefully he/she can get you sorted in time for the op.

Best of luck with the op, had it myself a few years ago and although none of these things are exactly a treat for the first day or two, I recovered well and so has everyone I know who has had the same op.

    Thanks all.

I saw my doc last Thursday when symptoms were really full on. There was no sign of bacterial infection (still isn't as far as I can tell) and discussed the pros/cons of antiB's as precautionary. Decided NO at the time.

I have a nasal spray (not steroid) and have upped my inhaler use though peak flow not to compromised.

I plan to go back tomorrow and if still as grotsville as before we may go ANtiB's (don't like the idea) and maybe Nasonex.

I'm just complete cream crackered and pray the cough doesn't hover like before - two months and almost cracked a rib. I am so organised for this I would hate to be 'bumped'

The 28 day thing is interesting - I will follow that up.

    Off for a snooze now.

Echo others. Get to GP and see what can be done to help cough. Short course of steroids is often given for exacerbation of asthma.
Otherwise it is the anaesthetists decision. If you have an active cough it may well be cancelled.
The 28 day thing is if the hospital cancels you and it isn't your 'fault'. Today I had to cancel a patient as they had run out of time in theatre due to another op taking 2 hours not the planned 20 mins. I'm this case we have to offer another date within 28 days. If the child had been unwell, it would not be the hospitals fault, so another date can be offered but not necessarily within 28 days.
    HTH.

Thanks PQ (and keeping all digits x'd for your news).

    So, from feedback I note:

    - active infection will mean no op?
    (How is 'active' infection assessed?)

    - Having an 'active' infection is deemed 'my fault?'

    - I could have to wait nnn days/weeks/months where nnn is an unquantifiable variable) for a new date.

I have no pre-tests except on admittance date (24 hours ahead of op) - so do I wait until I am admitted and let them decide?
(Notes from hospital say advise them 'in advance' if unwell.

Still not sure how far in advance I 'fess up' if I haven't shaken this. Doc reckons 10 - 14 days - but then what if everything improves.

I do know that once in I should be first on list (latex and other allergies) and therefore feel sorry for those 'waiting' who may get bumped due to longer ops ahead of them ........
