Ihave suffered from this pain on the right shoulder an upper arm since I had a fall and was on crutches .I had 2 cortisone injections and was on anti inflamitary tablets already as I had a bad knee any way I had a knee replacement in october which was a great sucess and I couldn't take anti inflamitaries beacause of thr op and the doctor said the pain in my upper arm was due to arthiritus it has now moved to my left shoulder and arm and seems much worse although it could be that I had my knee to worry about when it fist started. The pain seems to be more muscular than shoulder and I wonder if anyone has any experience of this as it has got to the stage that some days I need help dressing

Don't know if this helps but many years ago, I had something similar. It was diagnosed as 'Rotator Cuff' syndrome.Nowadays I think that it's called tendonitis.I also had other aches, pains and joint stiffness but the shoulder/ upper arm pain responded to high dose non steroidal anti inflammatories, and Paracetamol. It did take a few weeks though.HTH Mx.

It sounds similar to pain I have in my shoulders, margo. In my case it has developed since I came *off* crutches following two knee replacements (and I was using sticks before the operations too as my knees were so bad). It kind of makes sense to me because I have fairly suddenly completely changed the way I use my arms when walking.

I have rheumatoid arthritis which probably contributes but the rheumatologist said it's not actually in the shoulder joint but the 'rotator cuff', as has already been said, the muscles and tendons around the shoulder. I was told that if it didn't get better i could be referred for physiotherapy and if that didn't work I could have steroid injections (as I used to have in my knees every six months, before the replacements. I really really want to avoid that if possible). Meanwhile I could look up 'rotator cuff' exercises if I wished.

So that's what I've done and the exercises do seem to help. There are some to de-stiffen the shoulder and others to strengthen the muscles. If you're interested I will look up the website where I found them and post the link, otherwise if you google "rotator cuff exercises" you'll probably find something. If you can get referred for physio though, that would (imo) probably be the best thing.

Sounds exactly a rotator cuff injury. Just got back from physio having had treatment for rotator cuff injury. Get thee to a good hands-on physio. It is a real nuisance and very painful esp at night - you need to work out what caused the injury and avoid stretching out with the bad arm horizontally from the body - ie lifting full kettle at arms length, turning on garden tap that is in a very difficult spot (my main cause) saddling and rugging horses, hanging out heavy washing, esp above your shoulder height etc etc. Ibroprufen helps as it is anti inflammatory, add paracetemol for the pain - it does help. Good luck.

thanks for the information I am making an appointment to see the doctor as I have been on anti inflametaries and co-codamal for about 2 months and to be quite honest I feel that I might as well eat sweets as the tablets hardly effect the pain.I seem a right old moaner but having had years of knee pain and had that sorted its a bit of a let down for this to have happened

I spent about four years having first one and then the other shoulder "frozen"

No real explanation of what "frozen" means. GP sent me to expensive physiotherapist and I learned what exercises to do.

Have also read that once each shoulder has suffered this incredible pain and many spasms, you don't get it again. I hope that is true.

Since then I have watched at least 4 friends being very careful with their arms, and when I asked...yes, they had "frozen shoulders".

Something about the way they pour out a tea/coffee pot, flinch, and use the other arm.

I saw the doc on wednesday it was really nice to see a doctor who actually seemed interested and didn't just blame it on arthiritis in fact she told me what my symtems were and what I could and couln,t manage before I told her She did give me tablets that were 5 times stronger than the ones i was taking and some really marvelous anasthetic cream to rub in.I have also had an xray and have to go back for steroid injections she did give me some hope that it could get better in agout 12 months. The best thing is that although I still pain I can at least do a few exercises to build up my muscles
