You can check-out any time you like,
But you can never leave!
Forever in our hearts....RIP
Green Jewel 11.02.2010
Marigold 15.03.2011
Septimus Harding 24.01.2012
Marie $quirrel Nutkin ($quiggs) 17.06.2012
Those are the posters I know, I also know there are others... please add their names so they will be forever with us.
EllKaye - there was also the lady who, like me was a humanist celebrant. I know her RL name but cannot for the life of me recall her board name. She came from the West Mids and died of stomach cancer in 2009. I know she was a very cheery person who had survived one bout of cancer and then it returned with a vengeance. Poor lass. Her board name was two words I think - I almost have it but not quite IYKWIM! Frustrating!

Until you wrote this, savvie, I thought you meant amethy5t (U13830783), but I may be mistaken ... she started a thread here in TVH about atheists, which ran for a while.
I also think there was another poster - was it Sagey? - who was a Radio 2 refugee, whose passing we were told about via info on a non-Ö÷²¥´óÐã MB.

Marjoy in France was the first ML death I knew of, many years ago now.
Captain Wentworth around 4 years ago, I think.
I haven't seen cushioncover since she posted this

OH and I remember Amethy5t. She and her OH came to the Oxford (Inspector Morse) Meet, and we enjoyed her company so much. It was only at the end of the day that she told me that she was undergoing chemo, and not long after that, I heard that she had died. I think it was around 2009, but I cannot be sure.
AmethySt is right - goodness knows why I recalled two names!
[ sorry diversion - Lili - I read elsethread that you are presently in 'my' part of France a ce moment? Hope you are enjoying it there!]

and yes, our records show that it was in 2009 though I don't have the exact date - think it was in the latter part of the year. I do feel bad about not knowing that more precisely.

The Oxford Meet was in May, Savvie, so I think you are right about her dying in the autumn. IIRC Hebe knew her in RL, too.
Well if Carcassonne is your part of France, then -yes- I am here. Although it was raining this morning in Mirepoix, the clouds obligingly shifted at midday to give us a view of Montsegur. I'm afraid that my knee did not consent to climbing up to view the chateau!

I remember reading about Sagey (some sort of accent(s) on his name, can't recall precisely.)
I was looking at some very old threads, and wondering what happened to some of those names that used to appear so often.
To (probably mis-) quote a long-ago thread on a different Ö÷²¥´óÐã board, "Who'll tell the boards when we die?"

I have a list of people to inform, kept with my will. It includes ML.

Thanks everyone for adding to this...I didn't realise Amethy5t had died you see?!
That is why I started this thread, because some people only post in limited threads or never venture to The Bull, DTA or Fantasy Archers etc... and their passing goes unnoticed or unknown.
Wasn't there a Capt. Wentworth? and a poor woman in the mental health thread who fell silent?...
You see? the list is growing, and whilst I may not know them, you do, and their passing through Hotel California should be acknowledged.
I thought this could be like a visitors book, where they checked out...but they never leave.

Captain Wentworth was in a fatal RTA in October 2008 - her sister still posts here occasionally.
I didn't post on PSS, had never interacted with the Captain, and was more affected by this news than possibly any other that I've heard of in ML.
The other person is now posting here again with a new ID (another MLer told me this).
It is my personal hope and wish that nobody notices that I've been absent for permanently longer ... I am, as they say, destined for well-deserved oblivion.
There was Marigold.......

I wonder if you're talking about the same person. I thought that a ML from long ago had returned with a different identity and that another MH thread regular had died. If the person we were told had died has returned with another identity it will really shake my beliefs in who is trustworthy here, that would go beyond any other duplicity we've been subjected to.
Ell Kaye this is lovely. You are kind to think of this.
I also remember Amethyst, although I can't remember the date of her death. I met her at the lovely Oxford meet, and had many a sprightly exchange with her here and on the Woman's Hour MB. Hebe attended her funeral, and reported that Barwick Green was played.

TBH, in TVH, I don't know, DeeKay Bee, I only know what I was told - and I don't want to start a game of Chinese whispers.
Nor is this the thread for it ... so I'll shut up now.
Sorry, Elle Kaye, it's been one of those days.

Our house is further to the east of Carcassonne - not far from Minerve, another wellknown Cathar stronghold and about 4kms from St Chinian. Beziers is the nearest big town - notorious for the infamous instruction from the Abbot in charge of the crusade when told there were Catholics in Beziers as well Cathars - "Kill them all, God will know his own" It is said that some 22,000 died in one weekend.
Sorry Ell Kaye.

Now that she's been mentioned, I too recall Darrowsgirl - rather abashed, as I'd forgotten about her. Like DKB, I didn't 'know' her ... often, the first I hear of a poster is about their last moments.
RIP Darrowsgirl - she should surely be on the list of those who are remembered.

Savvie, I wonder if there might be some confusion here (and like as not, it's me who's confused - it usually is!). If you mean the lady who posted as 'amethy5t (U13830783)', I thought she died on Wednesday 3rd February, 2010? I remember particularly because at the time it was possible to make a donation in her name for ovarian cancer research.
I've just double checked the webpage her OH set up in her memory, and that's definitely the date given there.
Ell Kaye, what a good idea this thread is - though I'm terribly saddened to see how many MLers have been lost in a relatively short space of time. I had no idea about Marigold or Septimus - such a dreadful, dreadful shame.

You may very well be right Icenslice - I looked back in my emails to see when the BHA office knew and the reply from them suggested that she died in the latter part of 2009, but didn't give a specific date (it was a temp who answered and they probably didn't know Amethy5t). I didn't know there was a website for her either which is an appalling lapse on the part of the Ceremonies office at BHA HQ and I shall be onto them about this pronto (they love me there!)
Tks for the infor
Savvie
Thinking out loud ...do we need or want an 'In Memoriam Thread' where we can list in no particular order, at the moment the names of past posters, or shall we stick with this thread?
I've also recalled Kishtu's partner Wascally Woyalist who died on 21 December 2008.
I am sorry to have messed this thread up with other stuff Ell Kaye. But I think it's kind of nice to have the Hotel California in the title as that is really what ML is for so many people.

Thank you for starting this thread, LK. There are some deaths that provoke a huge outpouring and some that cause hardly a ripple. Septimus' passing hit me hardest as he was as lovely a man in RL as he was on the boards, and so brave and self-effacing. And perhaps this thread is the place to remember the "hardly a ripple" ones, who were no less precious for all that.

Not at all...but there are others who have tidy minds iyswim...
I just think that after 10 years or so, the list is now an appropriate thing to do...so many times a year there is a 'What Happened to'....
....and as I said up thread I do not know them all ...but I don't think *anyone* should sink into the collective mayo....& Marie $quirrel has been the catalyst...nothing else I can say....
And perhaps this thread is the place to remember the "hardly a ripple" ones, who were no less precious for all that.Â
I absolutely agree with that. There are so many people who I recall from my early days here, who didn't post that often, but when they did, they managed to strike a chord with me. Faraway Tree was one such person and I often wonder where she is and how she is now. Some may no longer be with us and if we discover that, then it would be wonderful to be able to mark their passing here I think. The core of ML was always the people who came here and I think Ell Kaye has hit on a terrific idea here.
Thanks Linda (and Kate for giving me another way of seeing this)

Oh Savvie, thank you for remembering Wascally Royalist. I knew he was Kishtu's husband but was struggling to remember his full board name.
Kishtu set up the first candle thread in 2007 that was inspired by everyone lighting a candle at the same time one evening to wish $quigs's DD well when she was desperately ill.

I seem to remember we tried to track it on Google maps...
What happened to Kishtu? I do hope she is ok...
Didn't mean to make extra work for you Savvie, I've been reading how much you're helping GEm and J through this difficult time, and I'm sure you could do without any more fact checking/record chasing landed on your plate.
The date just stuck in my mind, especially with it being so close to gj's death. Such a sad way to begin 2010.
No worries ice as my Aussie friends say. I feel truly bad in not know the exact detail personally and am very sad that I never met Amethy5t in RL - I know so many humanists around the country but to my great regret, never met her.
GEm is not far away and it is easy for me to pop down to her. She is really doing a splendid job and is quite one of the best of all friends to have in your corner I think. She has a very big job to handle there and it will take time to fully sort out. I shall just turn up and do the odd bit here and there as needed and I feel rather embarrassed at being outed tbh! She is the real grafter and, in the nicest possible way, I don't want people to think otherwise!

Pretty sure I saw Kishtu posting under a new name a while back, LK. Haven't seen her recently, but then I've hardly been on the boards myself for a couple of years, so that doesn't mean very much...
Didn't know amethy5t well myself Savvie. In a couple of conversations on this board she mentioned a book she'd written, and I got in touch with her to discuss one or two points that interested me.
I think she and Squigs had quite a bit in common: always looking ahead, with so many things still to do. She had another book planned, I believe, and it's sad that it will never see the light of day.
Mind you, I can't help feeling it's better to leave this world still mentally acute and enthusiastic about life, than it is to just falter and gradually fade away. It's how I plan to go, given the chance ; )
Yes, I've 'spoken' to GEm a few times over the years on this board, but had no real idea of what an amazingly generous (and tough!) person she can be when she sets her mind to it. I've been so impressed with the way people have stepped in to help J & GI J through this - impressed, but not entirely surprised. I long ago ceased to be surprised at what ML can achieve if it puts its collective mind and heart to work!

Yup - me too. Preferably - "aged 85, she fell down the mountain she was climbing in the Himalayas" or "aged 86, she drowned snorkelling off the Cook Islands in the Pacific" or something like that. Anything but peacefully in her bed!
We can but hope!

Hi Nomes - how are you - long time no see?
Hope you are keeping well and that the old foot is not continuing to give you the terrible gyp that you put up with for so long.
I well remember Kishtu setting up the Candle Thread back in 2007. I think that she has another partner now (though my memory could be faulty on this as it often can be, but whatever and wherever she is I am sure we all wish her well and hope that she is happy.
love to you and yours Nomes

Kishtu as was has another partner and a child. Her new name is/was Medhuil Webbestre (I may be misspelling).
Don't think she's been that for quite some time. She's now a lady bread-maker, rather than a weaver, IYSWIM.
