I have an abiding memory * of my mother that always brings tears to my eyes. She became a GP in the 1950s when patients didn't believe a woman could really be a doctor. By the time she retired at the age of 75 she had such! a following and 10 years later when we shop in Tesburys we invariably meet former patients who greet her warmly and with gratitude.

Anyway to get to the point, *one Christmas when I was about 6 her present was a broderie-anglaise wedding dress for my doll that she had handstitched, after my bedtime (and surgery and calls!) to keep it a surprise. II didn't realise this at the time and I'm nearly 60 now and I have only recently 'spoken to her about it. I'm sure many MB contributors love their mothers - would be interested to hear their take on this.

What a lovely memory, montymorency, but you've started this thread in TVH by mistake! If you ask, it could be moved to The Bull, where many more people will see it.

That is nice - it reminds me of the red velvet outfit my mother made for my doll, Susan, one christmas.

It also reminds me of the stories my grandmother told of the village doctor who was a woman. She was widowed and took over her husband's practice, as well as bringing up her children. It would have been around the 1930s. There were some amazing women around.
