Anyone out there besides me have a sleep disorder?

I have an overlong internal day, so my natural pattern if nothing stops me is to stay up later and later and later until I've gone all the way around the clock. I try to keep it under control but that gets hard when I'm not feeling well. Once asleep, I stay asleep except for trips to the loo.

I didn't even know there was a name for it until recently, but this is it -

When it's reasonably under control, it just operates as

I have a preference for sleeping during the day but that's for different reasons.

I get an urge to start tidying and cleaning etc. around bed-time and it's really difficult to settle down and stick to the same time.

I don't generally get tired around 'bedtime' (or whatever bedtime has just become). If I'm tired, it's for something else and I can sleep at any time of the day or night if I'm poorly.

A relative of mine also has a problem with this, though not as bad. I think his is just delayed sleep phase because he never moves around the clock.

Hi sunny, my son has suffered since he was about 10. It played havoc with his schooling. He had some treatment at the sleep clinic at the Maudsley. But since his diagnosis of schizophrenia, the medication he takes for that seems to help with his sleep pattern.

Yes, my medication helps with it to some extent.

I've come across a lot of people like myself with bipolar disorders who have sleep problems like this that are there to some extent all the time but are manageable except when they're at their most ill, to the extent that I suspect that the incidence of sleep disorders relating to internal day length and day/night timings mentioned in Wikipedia are an underestimate, with the problems in bipolar disorder just being put down to the condition.

I wonder if there's actually any link between sleep disorders and schizophrenia? I fancy going rummaging around the net in search of research on it. I've never actually looked up sleep disorders until the other day, I just took mine for granted.

I have sleep apnoea - does that count? Not linked to any mental health issues, though. I have a CPAP machine which oh says works really well in that he doesnt hear me snoring any more.

Its linked to thyroid issues. I changed gp recently and the usual questionnaire asked if I had thyroid problems - I wasnt sure what to put as I have had a total thyroidectomy!

Ooh, I don't get a fancy machine thingy. That definitely counts!

I should have thought sleep apnoea could be linked to mental health issues - sleeping with someone who snores could leave a person tired and ratty...

Seriously, though, I'm glad your machine helps and I do realise that sleep apnoea is potentially dangerous.

Ah yes - oh's mental health issues! Never thought of that! That explains a lot!,,

Seriously yes the cpap machine does help. The only minor problem is that it makes a bit of a noise and I dont want to wear earplugs in case I dont hear eg a smoke alarm!

I thought I might feel claustrophobic wearing a mask each night but not at all.

Does it place limitations on how you sleep or can you toss and turn with it on?

No, no real limitations. The cable thing which connects the mask to the machine is long and one of those curl y ones that stretch. I can easily turn over. Just occasionally it gets wrapped round my neck and needs disentangling but its much too big and floppy actpually to strangle me! Oh says thats his job when I switch on the light at silly oclock to disentangle it and wake him up!
