Have we had a thread on this before?
Anyway, my niece's baby was born 2 months early and weighed in at 2lbs and 6 ozs. Everyone was out of their minds with worry. But he made it, and is thriving nicely now. He's about 8 months old now and is still very small, but the cutest little thing ever you saw. (Takes after his Great Auntie April) : - )
When I told the ones in work, one person said she was a premmie too and weighed only 2lbs (about 50+ yrs ago) How amazing is that!
Is 2lbs a record? Anyone else have any happy premature baby stories?

Not *my* Baby, but, my Austrian friend's Twins were due on Sept.5th 2009
It was established that there was a problem, and that 1 of the babies would die, as the poor darling had no brain
It was decided to attempt to remove the poorly one on 27thMay 2009 - a complex procedure. He was delivered + died , which was expected , but still devastating .
The other one decided that he couldn't wait, + was delivered weighing a little less than 850g . he was see-through + looked like a rat with Monitors on...
He was in Intensive Care for 7.5 weeks in the next County, and then flown by Helicopter to his Ö÷²¥´óÐã County, where he remained in Hospital for another 6 weeks
He is running around like any 3 year old, now, but has had an awful lot of Therapy at home , to keep him going

Hi Carinthia, how sad for the little one who didn't make it, and how sad for the parents. Trying to work out how much 850 grms is in real money ....???? I never got to grip with the metric system, don't think I ever will ...
Great to hear the other little one's doing ok. My great-nephew still has some problems too but hopefully will make a full and complete recovery. It's wonderful what can be done to help premmies these days. I daren't even have looked at a photo of him before he was discharged .. just in case, it would've broken my heart - and I'm not even baby-minded in the slightest. But needless to say, he's one very loved little baby, by ME! So you can guess how loved he is by his mummy and daddy. And don't even get me started on his granny ... (my sister)
Thanks for your story. xxx
My youngest nephew was born at a day under 28 weeks, weighing 1lb 13oz. He fitted on a sheet of A4 paper and my sister (who is tiny) could get her wedding ring over his foot. He was in hospital for about three months, and there was huge relief when he was allowed home. I think he wore Tiny Tears babygrows for quite a while.
Now he's 13 and as irritating as any other teenager...

April, my friend was born about 50 years ago, and weighed 2lb 6oz, just like your nieces son.
He's 6' 2", very healthy and one of the best in the country at his job.

I don't know my cousin's exact weight when she was born - but I graphically remember my mother showing me a 2lb bag of sugar, and saying that was the weight of my new little cousin. (this would have been mid-50s)
My aunt gave birth to a baby boy who was about 5 or 6lb, they had expected the baby to be larger, and then realised there was another one, a tiny little girl, nobody knew she was there!
In spite of her birth size, she has always been the one with more get up and go, and is a successful business woman, he's a plodder.
850gm is approx 1lb 14 oz
F-P
850g is just under 1lb 14, for those who were wondering.
My daughter had quads in March 2012 -- The largest was 2lb 15oz at birth and the smallest weighed 2lbs 3oz --- They're approaching their first birthday and are all doing well in their development - crawling and playing -- It' s really quite interesting watching their personalities emerge -- They are actually tested for growth/ability based on their 'adjusted age' which accounts for amount of time they missed by being born at 28 weeks --
Wow, Granny Liz - quads! You must all have had an amazing year! What do the babies weigh now?

Granny Liz - wow! Congratulations!
What a lovely thread. A tribute to the little fighters!
April - lovely to hear your little nephew is doing so well. (Doncha just love nephews and nieces - you get all the good stuff then you hand them back before they do the bad stuff.)
I'm not aware of any tinies in our family - in fact, just to balance the scales, my lovely nephew was 1oz less than thirteen pounds at birth . Yes, read it and weep!
He's now a strapping six-footer. Surprise, surprise!
I worked in NICU back in 1988. We had some real tinies survive, 25 weeks and around the 1ib mark - even a tad under
La Bez, that's so tiny - I read your post, then went to find something in the cupboard weighing a pound...difficult to imagine a whole person that small!
I knit for the premature baby unit at our local hospital, not just tiny clothes but also items to sell to raise money for the unit. We also knit items for memory boxes etc for the little ones who sadly do not make it.
No tinies in my family, though - we tend to be at the other end of the scale. My youngest grandson weighed in at 11lbs 4oz...!
Glad to hear your baby nephew is doing well, April. A friend of mine's daughter had a very premature baby a few years ago, I forget what weight she was, but she was so early they didn't expect her to survive the birth and at the time she was the smallest baby in the country (not sure for how long...). She is now at school and doing very well, very bright for her age and a proper little bossy-boots (unfortunately). She is also a big sister now. She did have hearing issues and had a cochlear implant, but other than that (and the bossiness) she is perfect.
Another friend of mine is a premature babies/neo-natal nurse and I know that they can work miracles these days. I asked her how she coped with seeing such tiny babies so ill and she said that when she was training they were told to always remember that these babies would not be here at all without their help so anything they could do for them was a bonus. She also said that the down-side is that a lot of babies survive now with such dreadful problems that she wonders if they did the right thing, is it right to keep a child alive that has no quality of life? But that's for another thread - this one is for celebrating happy stories about premature babies.

Carrick, that is wonderful to read. Thank you.
Thanks to everyone else on the thread too and it's lovely to hear of all the positive stories.
~Waves to Loopy and Shirley too~
And Shirley ... your lovely nephew's poor mummy < OUCH! >
