For me it as to be Alan,he was a master at perveying a message of serenity, enjoyments and rewards of gardening.
I still mourn Geoff Hamilton but Monty came close.
Geoff Hamilton was by far the best, he inspired people to have a go, without spending a fortune.
I like(d) them all, but like others have said, I still miss the late Geoff Hamilton. He always seemed to care about the ordinary gardener, with his put together coldframes, etc.

I really liked Alan T, but find this new bloke Toby is ok. I like Joe, too. I wasn't keen on Monty because I found his style too proffessional. But then, the very basic approach is just what I (personally) need and I can see that experienced gardeners will find him boring. Maggie
Geoff Hamilton....no one ever came close, before or since and most probably never will.
RIP Saint Geoff.
I quite like Carol - didn't at first but she's 'grown on me'! Sorry for the pun!
Why was the first message removed? I sort of got the thread of this but can't imagine what someone would have said that was offensive!

Editorial Note: This conversation has been moved from 'Garden clinic' to 'Gardening on TV'.
Has to be Alan but with Geoff running him a very very close second
I rather like Toby
I cant say I have ever not enjoyed watching all GW programmes from before the first GH.gardening is the priority
I didnt enjoy MD as much because although I have gardened for more than 40 yrs and believe used chemicals only when I had to. I have not used slug pellets for at least 20 until this year when I put them in some pots and hanging baskets (they can climb walls).I bought a small bag of peat about 8 yrs ago which I use occasionally. But I was always feeling like a totally bad person for daring to be inorganic.
Alan was a happy in between and I was sorry we had to leave his garden behind.
For me the best was Geoff so good at inspiring you to have a go at making your own rocks/ cold frame/ pergola etc etc.but also told about buying as well.He was also the first person on gardening I think talking about saving lime stone/ peat/and trying to be aware of the enviroment. I am sure some of the posters believe it is all new.I hope TB is going to be similar to him, open minded.
Sorry this turned into an epic

Geoff Hamilton.
I have high hopes for Toby, though.
I think the weakest link would have to be the polish professor. I cann't remember is name but he used to have a gardening road show named after him on uk tv gardens. He had a good ear for classical music though.

For me it's Alan T. He's the one who inspired me to set up my own gardening business after following his 'How to be a Gardener' online, then going further and passing my RHS exams. Having met him personally as well, he is as he appears on TV - utterly charming and friendly.

For me it's Monty.
I also like Carol and Alan Titchmarsh...Oh and Percy Thrower.
Stefan Buckzaki is the name we are groping for. I have several of his books which are very good.
I think all the presenters have their merits and, at the risk of being shouted at, personally I enjoy those bits of the Chelsea coverage presented by non-gardeners like Wesley Kerr and Nicky Chapman.

Alan T for me!
I loved his humour when presenting. He came over so well and he had some good tips and ideas.
I miss him doing gardening on TV,think its a shame that all that gardening talent is wasted
doing a chat show. I did however enjoy the programes he did around Britain, I think he captures your attention when he presents.
G.Hamilton was a little before I got into Gardening, but I did enjoy the programes I did watch. M.D. Did not inspire me - Sorry.
So far I have taken a liking to Toby think he will have his own style, something in between Alan and Geoff. Good Luck to him.

bits of the Chelsea coverage presented by non-gardeners like Wesley Kerr Â
I've been wanting to ask this for ages - but can anyone tell me what Wesley Kerr does when he's not doing his Chelsea pieces from all the far flung corners of the world ?? (or stripping off to swim in a pond ). I've never seen him in anything else.
Just a question - not a criticism
Jb
PS: To answer the original question: Geoff Hamilton, Chris Beardshaw, Alan T (well he's a local lad so I have to!), and I think I'm going to like Toby.
I'm not sure who my favourite is
I'm not sure who my favourite isÂ
Joanybird - I don't know but I wish he did more of it all the time because his slots on the Chelsea coverage definitely detract from the whole.
Try googling his name and see what that gets you.

Alan T on GW was great, I just loved the shows. Monty really grew on me and I was sad to see him go. I didn't see the much adored Geoff so feel I cannot really comment. I think Toby will do a good job though. I like his little tips and think people will learn a great deal from him, I have a feeling he will worm his way into many a heart. .

This posting has been hidden during moderation because it broke the in some way.
For joanybird and anyone else who is interested I googled Wesley Kerr:
I think the way he as perveyed his arguement. Is unacceptable. It agitates people talking on this forum. It starts off with one person and then in a short period of time you get other people leaving argumentative messages. It detracts from why the message board is supposed to be there for. Helping others.

Loved GH's voice - all calming and you really got the idea he loved what he was doing! Liked AT's humour and his enthusiasm. Didn't really watch many of MD's programmes, though seen a few repeats on UKGardens and wished I'd watched more. The verdicts still out on TB as yet, but I hope he does well. Like Alys Fowler but thats probably because she's into veg!

It has to be Geoff Hamilton for me
He was absolutely brilliant
A real man of the people & passionate about his garden in a down to earth way.
Helen
Actually I'm liking Claudia Winkleman (ITT) and would like to see her given a chance
Not sure Claudia has the right shoes for it!! I enjoyed the quiet professional style of Dan Pearson on those programs he made. Ö÷²¥´óÐã Farm - I think.
It would have to be Geoff Hamilton. I have several of his books and when reading them I can hear his voice. Paradise Gardens is my favourite.
I loved his down to earth approach and the way he made you feel as if you could do anything if he showed you first.
In an ideal world I would get Geoff to spend a day in my garden helping me to build something rustic out of wood. (Possibly followed by a morning with Delia Smith learning how to cook the perfect roast potato)

I liked something of all of them, each bringing their own take on horticulture. As much as I enjoyed Saint Geoff, I am glad we have moved towards a less man of the soil/ hokey view. We need to encourage children to enter the horticultural profession (Have you tried to get professional help lately... a nightmare!) and thus need the more thoughtful and professional approach of the Don or the Buckland!
Monty, without any doubt - still missing him TOO much.
I still really miss Monty too. I loved Alan T in the programme & thought it would never be the same, but was amazed how quickly I warmed to Monty. Between those two I really couldn't choose, I loved them both.
I hope we'll all be as fond of Toby B in a while.
Alan is King in my eyes. I really hope that all his programs will be released on DVD, especially How to be a Gardener. LOVED the program series.
Well, in all this - No ONE has mentioned old Percy!! Shame on you all!
Hi mommydoos
You must have missed "Message 18 - posted by whitecatgardens (U11703129) , 5 Weeks Ago
For me it's Monty.

I think they had it covered there. For me it has to be MR HAMILTON great man. I have been lucky to get his dvds 9 hours long what more could you ask for.
I don't think Monty was a patch on Alan. Carol's better since her makeover! Have you noticed how different she looks since her earliest appearances?
Have a look at this to see who has pride of place in my parents' garden...
[IMG]/IMG]
His son Nick!! Join me in starting q 'let's have Nick Hamilton' campaign!(as seen at Barnsdale with Toby 2 weeks ago on GW) A chip off the old block if ever i saw one.....

Geoff - 10/10
Alan 9/10
Monty 5/10 (curate's egg, knew his stuff but just too preachy
Toby 7/10 (on very limited evidence)
Carol - 6/10 - great at what she does but limited range - seeds, flowers, bulbs.
Joe - 4/10 - nice guy, good laugh, but I knew lots of more knowledgeable gardeners on my old allotment. I always get the feeling that he has just 'googled' for some of his words of wisdom rather than rely on his experience, unlike Alan,
Geoff (and Carol)
Geoff was great but it's time to let him RIP. His son seems like a very nice person and is keeping the legacy going - I don't want to see him on GW.
I loved the Alan years but he chose his moment to leave. His "How To be a Gardener" series is inspirational and now he's happy doing other things. I don't like the other things, but all credit to him for not trying to juggle too many balls at once.
Monty was Marmite. I love Marmite, didn't love him .
Toby is the worst ever. I haven't had a honeymoon period with him so can't say it's over. For me he was only ever on probation (Weed it and Reap) and he has dragged GW down to the same level.
Carol's special on using colour in the garden was the best special ever for me. I'd like to see more of the same from her.
I find Joe endearing but he's still the presenter in search of his niche.
I have warmed to Alys, I feel she's the only person who has any sort of connection to Berryfields.
I just hope that there is some new talent out there who could bring life back into GW and please the majority, I'd rather look forward than back.
Toonia, Alys only has that connection, as she is there most of the time, except for the 3/4 hours a week, that the Ö÷²¥´óÐã want the presenters there for.
I've said for a long time, and has been agreed with on here umpteen times, that the problem since Alan, is that it's not the presenter's garden, that is shown on GW. Until the powers that be correct this, things won't be the same.
Geoff 10/10
Alan 10/10
Monty 10/10
Percy 9/10
Toby 6/10
Carol 5/10
Joe 3/10
I recently bought from a charity shop a superb book called GARDENERS' WORLD THROUGH THE YEARS by Gay Search (ISBN 1-84442-944-X) which documents the history of the programme from it's start in 1968. It also gives mention to many presenters who who only with the programme for a relatively short time.
Nigel Colbourn, Adrian Bloom, Liz Rigbey, Stephan LaceyNick Wray, Bob Flowerdew, Gay Search, Ivan Hicks, Rachel de Thame, Chris Beardshaw.
A nicely presented book and a good read too.

CP, I think that is a bit mean on Carol and Joe, maybe even Toby, tbh. Joe, away from the allotment is worth a 5 at least, if not 6. carol for her enthusiasm in cuttings, seed sowing, etc. should be a 6. Toby, I understand, as he has not been there long enough to fully mark up yet, though I think he is worth at least a 7, if not 8. What harm did Arthur do, btw?
