I read with interest the comments of Rosemary Edwards (via the Blogs link supplied above), and found it difficult not to be sneering when she declares she reads the comments on this board 'religiously', and takes note. How on earth can this woman profess to be listening when there has been a prolonged campaign against some of the imbecilic camerawork we've had to endure over a prolonged period. Rosemary makes no mention of these dissenting voices. She emphasises that they've applied HD technology to the programme, and that they've taken on board the complaints of viewers. No indications given as to when she started to take note of board opinions, and what exactly has been changed. Does this infer that she personally was originally in favour of the blurry/flashbangwallop/through the long grass style of filming we've endured in recent times? She then states that many people love Joe's allotment (she's 'aving a larf), but omits to mention that the overwhelming majority of contributers to this board thought it was hellish from start to finish (if only it would finish). This was a wonderful opportunity wasted for those of us interested in vegetables. It was probably yourself who decided to get rid of the much-loved introductory music, when there wasn't anyone who stated they were sick of it. I've seen about 20 minutes of GW during the last 3 weeks, and honestly can't understand where my enthusiasm for it has gone. I certainly haven't made any decisions not to bother with it in future. I don't even mind the new presenter (though I cringe at the horrendously stilted dialogue between him and Alys), and realise that the content of any programme can't always be to my personal liking. Therefore it must be just the chavvy filming techniques which is completely turning me off. Tell us Rosemary, how long is it until we look into someone's ear or up their nose while they're talking - while the camera circles around? Instead of wasting your time on a blog, please try turning Gardeners' World back into a programme for adults - then we can all thoroughly enjoy the latest advances in HD broadcasting.

Odd camera work is spreading too. If you think Joe's imaginary friend stage left is offputting, we watched an excellent documentary last night where one of the experts - an intelligent and interesting man - addressed everything to a point about 18" above the camera.
I suspect the poor chap was suffering with nerves, but he looked like a saint appealing for divine assistance!

Alys is a an interesting, intelligent gardner with a good dose of individuality, just like Carol. I hope they both continue to appear on the programme.

I think Alys is great and how dare anyone complain about her accent, I suppose they think the likes of Lorraine Kelly(nice person) speaks well. I cant understand a word she says.
Alys and Carol are natural and intelligent and its what they say not how they say it.

I watch Raymond Blanc's Restaurant series and noticed there were the same fancy shots, close-ups, clever camera-work etc. on there. But for some reason it doesn't jar. It would be interesting to see a "plain" version of GW - no 'interesting camerawork', no music, just talking to camera and then see a version of the same with the all singing and dancing bits thrown in. I'll bet a lot of people would be quite disappointed by the former.
    Just a thought.

Oh, how well you know me - although to be fair, it was only a reflex reaction to reading the 'blog' I was directed to, and I honestly (honestly) hadn't planned to whine again when I logged in. I just find it remarkable that Rosemary has the gall to produce a blog for our consumption, when writing her resignation would be a better use of her time.

Did anyone else notice that Alys Fowler wears Mrs Merton glasses to distract from her very pronounced "Crow Feet"?

And is the bloke down the pub correct in saying that her father used to have a allotment just off Albert Square? Or am I just been sucked in to watching a garden orientated soap opera with more presenters/characters than viewers?

I'm an expert at gardening! But having studied this Board for eons as well as watching Gardeners' World - I just want to fit in with the other contributors, sartorial and satirical commentators!

I loved last nights program once again and the variety was good.
    I have one critisism.
Toby dont go back to GH program hes my all time favorite presenter try and make the program your own you are good enough to do it.

I loved seeing how the cloche was made and feel that the production team did take my comment on board about seeing how things are done from start to finish and with good solid camerawork to boot. So thank you team for that.

Joe, IMHO, is beginning to get the 'feel' for his allotment space now and I'm looking forward to seeing how he progresses. I genuinely hope he will not be discouraged by the comments here and give up.

Alys, I just don't know. She has no specific role in the programme and is always assigned 'fill-up' or 'bitty' parts. There's something missing from her presence on the programme and it is possibly the case that there's one presenter too many. Joe and CK have specific projects. TB is trying to fill the lead role of a generalist which leaves Alys with nowhere to go. I do sympathise with her as I feel she does 'know her stuff' but is not in a position to demonstrate it.

Carol, always a gem. Always inspiring. A true plants person who, in my opinion, deserves more time to herself on GW.

I like Toby and GW generally but one thing about last night's I had to comment on. The piece about Crairie gardens in Scotland. They sent Joe Swift up there to see the Autumn colour [last years], but the only tree that got a mention was a Rhododendron Falconeri plus a few meagre shots of a tree here and there plus a bit of running water. I thought this segment one of the most ridiculously short and wasted efforts in all the years I've been watching this programme.

Agree with you, Gardenballet - but I also agree with the criticism that some of the dialogue (script, I should say) between Alys and Toby is very stilted. I suppose that Alys is a newbie presenter and therefore doesn't know how to speak a script naturally; but I feel it would be better to give them more scope for ad libbing instead of forcing Alys to learn a script.

Loving Toby. I think his all-round gardening knowledge is so much greater than Monty's -- and he's got such a sweet, little boy's face!

    ---
Ken, you must be watching a different programme than me. I feel that it's glaringly obvious that some of the criticisms voiced in this forum have been addressed by the production team in recent weeks. The camerawork is already much better and much more appropriate than it was earlier in the year. I don't notice the music, to be honest, and I assume that is the aim of all good incidental music.

But best of all, how fortunate are we to have GW in HD? Not a lot of Ö÷²¥´óÐã programmes have been given this privilege but, obvious as it may be to many here that gardening is a no-brainer for HD, the Ö÷²¥´óÐã hasn't got around to making a lot of other good programmes in HD yet.

I suppose the majority of viewers don't yet have the tools in order to watch GW in HD - and to them I can only say go forward and upgrade because GW in HD is stonkingly good.

Ms Edwards has done good imho.

Yes, I noticed that the cloche handed over to Alys was far more a finished product than the one we saw being made - I thought it had three struts!

We obviously didn't see the whole process, the plastic was all neatly pleated too.

A lot on camera work (which I think was improved this week) and a slight at poor old Alys.

Good work Toby. The new style is much more practical and I'm always surprised at the amount of advice packed into 30 minutes.

I agree with the comments about Joe's allotment and notice that Alys sometimes wears contacts as well as having changed her glasses since the first programme. But I've always enjoyed Als's slot for its practical nature.

Loving the programme like I used to.

The word 'frenetic' was used to describe Carol and I totally agree! I prayed she wouldn't be chosen as the lead as she would have worn me out with her over-enthusiastic language and every plant being her favourite! Some of the practical advice Toby has offered is new to me and very helpful. As for the cloche, 'one I made earlier' imitating cookery shows. Why not?

If the Ö÷²¥´óÐã is serious about wanting to attract a younger audience to this programme then Alys rocks. And I love her four legged sidekick.

Show is getting better by the week and now that the zoomy camera work seems to have reduced and even Carol is not quite so hyper have thoroughly enjoyed the programme(s) in their entirety. Surely cannot be far away before they revert to and hour long programme to expand on some of the gardening detail that is so obviously curtailed in the confines of the 30 minute slot. smiley - erm
None the less smiley - bubbly to all concerned and still comforting to see Monty's sleeves in the opening shots- trust he is keeping well.

I agree with Ken and have said before that Rosemary Edwards is a disaster and should go.

Like others, I spotted the differences in the cloche being made and the final product but it's easy enough to add the extra struts for security and do a neat job on teh plastic so no problems. I appreciated the nod to Geoff's genius and practicality too, along with the shortcuts available now.

I find Alys' contributions always clearly explained and thought TB's tips on pumpkin harvesting were excellent as were Carol's tips on propagating early flowering perennials and leaving late one still spring. Even Joe had some usual advice with his comfrey planting by the compost heaps. Whatever next?

Good programme this week but too short.

Really enjoyed the programme on Friday but it seems to me there are too many regular presenters for the half hour programmes. When the programmes were 1 hour long everyone had time for their slot/projects but now with less time it doesn't seem to work so well. Hopefully we will return to the 1 hour programmes but if not I think they need to lose one of the regular support presenters.

It's quite interesting isn't it. A lot of those that knock the Beeb boards (mainly the TV board I guess) seem to fall into one of these categories

    a) Those that left the Beeb because they wanted to chat about their kids/health/problems/whinges/the war and were prevented from doing so on the Beeb because they were off topic

    b) Those that feel it is OK for them to take a pot-shot at presenters, programmes etc. but not for the hoi polloi posting on the beeb. A certain amount of snobbery there methinks although mostly their comments will pass for humour, whereas the Beeb posters are just mentalists.

Despite its shortcomings the Beeb attracts a much wider audience of posters than other more specialised boards and blogs. Is it representative of the Gardeners World viewing public? Probably. God help us!

Dear Mods (says he trying to be polite), I thank you for your notification that my last posting has been 'modded' after many days in public view. I can only assume that you've been sleeping during this time, or more likely, someone has objected to an element which was within it, and you felt obliged to act. The message certainly wasn't a classic, and I'm not going to cry about having it reinstated - but I am hugely puzzled as to the reasons for it's belated withdrawal. You don't specify which element in the message caused offense, but since the bulk of it was flattering towards Gardeners' World, I deduce that it was my final sentence which related to Rosemary Edwards. It was of course, no more than hyperbole - a bit of innocent frippery - and I'm astonished that this has attracted your disapproval. If I'd said that 'she should be for the high jump', would someone really think that I was implying that she should be hung at dawn. The expression 'he/she should be shot' is still in everyday use, and no-one I know has ever thought that this is what is seriously suggested. Even the way my remark was couched gave an indication that this wasn't a serious suggestion. It would therefore be helpful if you could give a quick indication of just what caused this belated 'chop', and whether on reflection, you don't think it was just a bit ill-considered.

I think it's great that people are coming up with suggestions to improve GW, but I for one am glad that there is at least one gardening programme on TV. I will watch anything to do with gardening & wish that GW was longer, ran through the whole year not just the so called growing season (when does the growing season stop for goodness sake? I garden all year round.)I would just love it if there were gardening programmes every night - I'm not obsessed or anything smiley - yikes - & please can we have more allotment programmes?
