HSL, I'm going to meet CB, I entered his CB Mentoring Scholarship, and have got through to the next round, building a show garden at Malvern in 2009 - thats the easy bit - apparantly I've got to get up and 'pitch' to the judges, not sure about what but think I'll just do the show garden!!!

Hope you'll all come along and support me!!!

Thanks everybody, the theme for the gardens was 'dance' so the garden isn't what I would normally dream of doing...

HSL, Chris has still got 2 more scholarships on offer for 2010/11, so theres a chance for you yet!!

Well I appreciate your encouragement but I can't begin to imagine I would hit the grade, and I'm being honest rather than modest I promise. Supermum, I am REALLY hoping to go to Malvern next year, DBH owes me tonnes and tonnes of DWK's (Days Without Kids) courtesy of his Mountain Bike Fetish so I am considering coming and staying over (assuming he is back on full working hours by then of course smiley - sadface). I send you all the good luck and encouragemenyt possible with the mentoring, I would love to be there to see the results, I have every confidence in you.

Can I just tell you something? Its very exciting (to me anyway). I have completed my first proper garden border designs smiley - smiley. Drawing to scale and limiting the plants was definatley(spl) the hardest part. I hope the customer likes it (I will be planting it). I had to bring the rough pasture/meadows around the house into the garden, its been so much fun! I will see her nexy week with the plans so keep your fingers crossed for me, I would like to do more design as heavy gardening every day is taking a heavy toll on my hands and I am unable to close several fingers on my right hand now (without pain anyway).

Good Luck Supermum! You can do it!

Fantastic news, HSL! Is the plan coloured in? What materials did you use? All the best for when you see the client, but I'm sure all your hard work will be appreciated. Ooh, what a fun time for you. I've done a few garden designs, massive butterflies in stomach for first one, but client loved it. All worth while! smiley - hug

Thank you for the words of encouragement Greeneddy. I have only used coloured pencils for the colours but I have got a set which has many shades of the same colour so feel they do give a good enough idea. Also I have completed a sheet with pictures of the plants so that the customer knows what she is getting as she is by no means a gardener herself. I have done an aerial view and one as I am lying on the ground looking through, as there are grasses this has worked well (I hope anyway). This lady is a friend, but the type who will be honest with me, she is very supportive so if she is happy I can be confident she will recommend me when the opportunity arises.

    Happy Days smiley - rose

Well done HSL, designing other peoples gardens is more satisfying than your own, I love it...
All the mistakes and changes you wish to make on your own are used up designing others, it saves ever having to move house again!!

I know the pain, I've had both my carpels done in my hands, whilst the pain has mostly gone, the stiffness and lack of mobility are still there...but I can use a spade with no problem at all anymore...

I wish you luck too, let us know how you get on...it is exciting...and you can practice for next year now!!

Hi Gardenballet. It is the November issue you need and he is on page 100 looking as gorgeous as ever. Hope you haven't bought the October edition!

Thanks for pointing this out HSL. I get my mag on subsription but was saving it to take on our weekend away that we have just been on. Then on friday I had a quick look on here, saw your post and couldn't wait. I did only look at the pics though and saved the article till we were away.(Wasn't I good?)

The programme looks quite good and I quite like Nick Knowles too so lets hope it is worth waiting for.

Thanks for your message about your hands Supermum. At night I strap my fingers together (very attractive smiley - winkeye) so that my fingers don't get 'stuck' down, but now I find they are getting stuck in the upright position and my grip is much weakened. I was told I could try a steroid injection or an op, but that the cahnce of either being a success was not great.

When you had the op, how long were you unable to work? It has been suggested to me that I may be able to do it in winter when I am not busy with my work. Was it painful? Could you use your hands soon after? My hands are really quite uncomfortable now so I do feel I should get something done. Please let me know any suggestions you have I would really appreciate it.

Ahh, its great being a healthy gardener smiley - winkeye

HI HSL, if its your carpels it is so worth doing for the pain and numbness. I developed it in my late teens but didn't have the op until 5 and 3 years ago, by then so much damage had been done, thats why my grip and co-ordination with them is difficult.
Then pain I was experiencing when I finally said I'd like the op left me in tears most nights, and unable to sleep for months and months, then I found out it would be 2 years before I could have the op, so I went privately which took 3 weeks to organise!!
I waited the other 2 for my left hand on the NHS, the dr did say mine was the worse he'd ever operated on though...
Don't have them done together unless you and your husband are on a very intimate terms - you can't even pull your knickers up or other such matters in that region !!!!!smiley - yikessmiley - yikessmiley - yikes

I have a photo of some ground I cleared 3 weeks after the op so must have been ok by then, I think I padded out the wound with plasters etc and obviously didn't have any problem. It took a while for more delicate movements to return and some haven't returned hence the flicking of the teaspoon, dropping of cups etc etc

Wrist splints at night, another attractive addition can help, your doctor will prescribe those, having spoken to lots about the steroid, it works for a short while, is very painful and they have all ended up having the op.

Carrying plastic bags I was told is one of the main causes of it, thats why women get it more than men !!!!!

Good luck and don't leave it as late as I did...

Oh another extremely attractive night time position is to lie on your tummy with a pillow under your shoulder (of the worst affected arm) and hang your arm out of bed - you'll find the most effective way to stop the numbness, its usually with the palm of your hand facing outwards............don't know why but it does work....perhaps mine had got to extreme measures by then...
