I had to laugh out loud when Toby said we'd had a great October so far - quite dry and little wind - on Fridays Gardener's World! In his part of the country perhaps, but certainly not mine smiley - smiley

Here in Burnley we've had very few days when there has been no rain, and the winds have been really strong, blowing my planters over! We've had really heavy prolonged showers and even a couple of heavy hailstorms. Apart from two decent Sundays and a couple of dry evenings, i've struggled to get out in my garden. A pretty dismal October so far as far as i'm concerned smiley - sadface

I know we've already had a discussion about a North-South devide on GW, and I accept that GW can't cover all the different weather systems currently experienced by UK inhabitants, but I do wish they'd stop generalising!

Wet, wet, wet October here in West Yorks, too, apart from a few sunny days. My clay soil is all 'clarted up', as they say, and I slosh down over my little lawn to feed the guinea pig in the mornings. (He's in a hutch on the patio, in the sunniest bit of the garden). I have been spiking it and brushing hort sand over it for years, but always, after a summer of french cricket and games of football, it's such a little space, it does get compacted, and then this wet weather turns it into a squelchy mess.

We were forecast a dry weekend, and I was hopeful of getting out in the garden & allotment, but Sat was dismal, rain all day, and Sunday we had sudden sleety showers. On the bright side, it's been lovely today! Had a good old tidy up on the allotment, got leaves swept up into a leaf bin, mulched round the raspberries and the rhubarb, felt much better!

They must generalise. It would be tedious to do otherwise. Its been pretty sunny in Hertfordshire so far this month save for the odd day or two of rain - excellent planting weather. At last off-road tracks have been fast and fairly dry.

They don't generalize though, they say what is has been like in their back garden when the rest of us are under water!

I was beginning to think it only rained in southern ireland!, it has'nt stopped raining here since july (save one or two dry days), my large garden is like a mud heap, i have'nt been able to get out there in weeks, too wet and claggy to weed, the soil takes at least 2 weeks to dry out enough to work on so the odd dry day makes no difference to me! its very soul destroying trying to fight nature (or global warming!)plus i get the winds to contend with too. Ive got a huge job to do if it ever dries out and ive got roses arriving in november i hope.I think my cottage garden is being turned into a wetland, back to the drawing board i think. smiley - steam

Rochdale: June - rain; July - rain; August - rain; September - rain; October - rain, rain and more rain, and then some sleet! No wonder my garden is a total disgrace this year... I'm ashamed to even look out the windows at it! At least the inside of the house is looking a bit better though in various areas, which I would never have got round to had it not been blooming raining all blooming year!!!!!
