When Toby visited Nick Hamilton the other week at Barnsdale (and what a great presenter Nick would be - AND from BARNSDALE!!) Nick was painting on something to prevent codling moth fruit rot. What was it and where to get it? I used sticky strips and they are a devil to get off gloves, fingers, everything!
PS Wouldnt that be great - Geof Hamilton's son broadcasting from Barnsdale! Wow.
I believe he attached strips of plastic round the trunk and then painted the tar on that. It then traps any female moths climbing up to find a mate and can be easily removed from the tree in spring when its job is done without leaving sticky residue everywhere.
ann - well done you!
That is the best suggestion I have heard for a long time.

Am probably wrong but think it was plastic sheet tied on then grease smeared over (probably safer as well). Would serve the purpose of trapping the female moths and unlike tar would be a more stable "sticky" media for longer. The proprietary products are the "grease bands" but having tried these once was more stuck than the moths!!!.

When we went to Barnsdale a few years ago we had a long chat to Nick Hamilton. He was a really friendly person with the same charisma as his dad. We talked about Geoff and how much inspiration he had given us to tackle things we had never done before. He would make a good presenter and so would Barnsdale. Its a lovely place and a team of enthusiastic real people run it. I am afraid thats not what G.W want anymore. I really do not think they would want to be part of that image.Maybe if they could have a program on their terms that would be more likely. I live in hope.
As much as I loved Geoff and Barnsdale, it would never be the same and it would mean I couldn't go back and visit Barnsdale, like I have twice before, whenever I wanted to. Or would that be a price worth paying? I agree that Nick would be a great presenter, though I am very happy with Toby, atm. Maybe them together, now there's a thought! It's the people behind the scenes, that's the problem.
I thought Nick Hamilton was a real presence on the TV. I think he and Toby would compliment each other wonderfully. Please bring Nick in as a presenter; good presence, obviously knows his gardening and lots of knowledge to go with it. More Ö÷²¥´óÐã, more!!
