Has it already been mentioned? ... I just loved the bit where Tony said Alys was a 'know it all' - and the hidden expression on her face ... first class.... superb!! I 'like' them all - but maybe Alys needed a bit of a put down! - could you live with her? .... not me..... what you reckon?

Dannyson, I wonder if your attitude towards Alys is based on an inferiority complex. Often people with 'posh' accents or those who are well educated engender these kind of feelings in people who perhaps don't have a great deal of confidence in themselves and feel threatened by it.

I think Alys does know a great deal - as head gardener at Berryfields she would be expected to. Why should she dumb herself down for the sake of the lowest common denominator of the audience? The rest of the show does that already. I also think her screen presence improves with every programme and look forward to her slots more than the others.

My husband totally agrees with me.

Sorry Venus Mantrap but I think you are looking too deeply into Dannyson's posting. I personally dont like Alys either but not for any of the reasons you have concocted. Your theory could be transfixed to your chosen 'name' on these boards, so be careful in what you write.
With that I wish yu a happy new year.

    I quite understand.
I think there is a huge majority of viewers who are totally frustrated at how the format of our much beloved Gardeners World is heading and at not appearing to be listened to.
I am sure both Toby and Alys would be very acceptable if they were given a more defined direction, one with a better structure, perhaps showing us how to design a garden in the early months, flower, vegetable and green house and throughout the year continue to show how to tend these, including pruning and propagation but also include other items such as visiting other gardens and how to care for our countryside e.t.c.
We the viewers are either beginners or seasoned gardeners who are passionate about our hobby and we all tune in for advice and inspiration which sadly has been missing since September. I live in hope that next season will prove different.
I wish you a Happy New Year Venus Mantrap.

I can totally understand your point of view Venus and have thought the same a few times over the past months when I have seen negative comments about Alys.

Having lived in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Birmingham, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire during the course of my life I have seen the varying attitudes that people have to a 'middle class' lass with a softly spoken southern accent. I was thoroughly depressed for the first few months I lived in Sheffield as people were so aggressively anti 'southerners' and at 21 I was totally naive and thought that everyone should be judged on their own merits, not where they were born or how they spoke. I had never heard of the north/south divide until I had experienced that. I soon learnt to ignore those attitudes and loved living in Sheffield. I am however acutely aware now of how easy it is for people to dislike someone purely based on their background.

I really enjoy watching Alys and it is because she has a clear love for plants and horticulture. I found the piece where they showed her garden on GW earlier in the season thoroughly inspiring and it made me want to get out and do more in my own garden.

I wish people could get over going on and on about how they don't like Alys's name or class, or Carol's enthusiasm or voice. They both provide a lot of useful and interesting content to the show and I for one look forward to watching and learning from them.

Toby and Alys have only their producer to blame for puttig them in this negative spotlight.

I feel it is perfectly reasonable of me to add some positive comments about Alys amidst the sea of constant negative ones. I don't see why all the bitter grumps are allowed to voice their comments and I can't share my own thoughts too. Freedom of speach and all that, you have had your say, am I not allowed to join the discussion too?

"Move on and enjoy what ever accent and position you feel you have in life and let others do the same." I'm sorry I thought that was what I had just said. I don't quite understand why you are being hostile to me Paperwhite?

Perhaps you should give me your e-mail and then I can send my postings for approval beforehand rather than suffer your negative bile yet again.

Yes we know the production is rubbish, dare I say it... "you are digging up old ground again". This thread was about Alys and I replied to it. Simple as that. You however seem to feel the need to attack me for joining in the debate. Or is it just because you don't like my point of view.

I haven't written on this board for many weeks if not months as have alot of other people purely because of comments similar to yours relating accents and class, it is old hat and boring. It just is not necessary. We all have one thing in common and that is our love of gardening and that in itself crosses any prejudice, well I thought it did. I am sorry if I have offended you as this was never my intention but I still do not think I deserved your comments and to prove my sincerity I wish you a happy new year.

That you think my comments are old hat and boring? And then in the same paragraph you say you didn't mean to offend me?

Your words are completely insincere Auricula /Paperwhite or whoever you are. Stop trying to make yourself out as the saint. I am merely standing up for myself as you seem to feel the need to put down and belittle my posting.

Well, I've enjoyed this little scrap immensely. It's good to see that there is still a bit of 'oomph' left in the board. I was intrigued by Rach's assertion that Alys was perceived as being a little bit on the posh side. I've never been of this opinion, and this again just illustrates how difficult it must be to pitch the level of a programme which will keep the majority of viewers happy. However, I think that once Alys and Toby have enough confidence in themselves to drop the clearly scripted chats, they could actually turn into quite a good double act. Time will tell. In the meantime, I wish my squabbling friends a very good new year, and let's hope that we have a good quality of gardening programme to look forward to in the year ahead.

Goodness me PW, you have got your undies in a twist and I can't see why.

As for Dannyson, I fail to see why anyone should need taking down a peg or two for knowing what they are supposed to know in order to do their job and, in this case, that includes being able to articulate information clearly. Alys has the qualifications and experience necessary to be head gardener at Berryfields and her TV presence is improving with experience which is a relief to me given some of the other performances we have been getting recently on GW.

Alan Titchmarsh has a particluar gift for communicating the joys of gardening but I don't see his collection of qualificatins, experience and Yorkshire accent being called into question. I would though, take issue with Joe's lesser experience and mockney.

For me the big problem with GW is the production team. It must be time to think about contracting out this programme to a specialist production company that knows what it's doing - as it was before Monty took over as lead presenter and the Beeb brought the programme back in-house.

I haven鈥檛 looked on here for a while then as soon as I do 鈥渨hoosh鈥 鈥 it all kicks off. I don鈥檛 understand why Dannyson thinks Alys might need to be 鈥榩ut down鈥 and takes some delight in interpreting Toby鈥檚 comment as such. I took Toby鈥檚 鈥榢now it all鈥 comment to be tongue-in-cheek 鈥 the sort of thing you鈥檇 normally only say to a chum, if you were very comfortable with the person you were saying to and could predict that they would take it as such. It鈥檚 the sort of thing you certainly wouldn鈥檛 say if you meant it. Alys was perhaps taken aback that Toby came out with it on national television.

I think Alys makes good contributions to GW. Unfortunately, there have been a few negative posts on here about her so called 鈥榩osh鈥 accent. I wonder if it is because as a well spoken, well educated young woman she challenges some conceptions that 鈥榞ardeners鈥 are expected to be working class males, doffing their caps and being 鈥渆ver so 鈥榰mble鈥 like the Uriah Heeps of this world?

Have just read this thread & hasn't it gone off topic a bit?

Alys & co-presenters have to be 'know it all' to teach those viewers that aren't experienced gardeners.
I still watch & still get information sometimes but it doesn't spoil it for me if i don't.

OH gave me Alys' book for Christmas &, although it is supposed to be aimed at beginners, I've still enjoyed it & made notes on topics that I found useful/didn't know. Jo.
