Just announced that Monty Don will be on next Thursday's 'Question Time' on Ö÷²¥´óÐã1 coming from Bath. That should prove interesting.

Thanks Paul. Definitely one to watch although I have mixed feelings about the programme. Its one of those can't live with it, can't live without it situations where on the one hand I enjoy the political debate but on the other get fed up with the inevitable political rhetoric. Its refreshing when they have panellists like Monty who, not having the straight jacket of party allegiance, aren't afraid to tell it like it is.

Blimey!!!! Don't tell me that the ace bandwaggoner has morphed into a politician now!!

Er watch it Littlecornflower. He has a lot of followers on this Board. If you watch Question Time you will notice that it is not composed of all politicians. Monty is now Chairman of the Soil Association so I think that is every good reason for him to be on Question Time.

Great - a gardening programme at last. Will they be talking about soil?

Are you sure it's next Thursday, Paul N. In my TV magazine it states the debate will be from Dunstable. Have also checked out the Radio Times online and it says the same. Perhaps it's the following Thursday? Looking forward to it whatever. I'm sure it will prove very interesting. Our Monty's not frightened to say exactly how he thinks and feels!!!!!

Have just re-checked Paul N and I am pleased to say it is the following Thursday, 12 FEBRUARY. Thanks very much for alerting us to this.

Oooops, sorry. I was in to much of a hurry to let you good people know.

Thanks Paul.
Politics is about more than scandal and expenses now it seems!
I know we'll probably get a discussion with sustainable and organic and climate change in it, but I shall just hide my slug pellets and watch with interest and innocence.
PS cupboard under the sink if anyone wants to send the slug pellet police to my address

it is not composed of all politiciansÂ
I read that as "composted", glancing through the thread and thinking at first it was about GQT, not just QT.
Was trying to figure out why politicians should be composted . . .
Nooj, throw those slug pellets away. Go on, do it now, you know it makes sense!

I'd rather hear Monty on 'Gardeners' Question Time' than on 'Question Time' (i.e. I'd rather hear him talking about vegetables than sharing a platform with vegetables).

I think there may have been a slight mix-up over dates. Six days ago when the original message was posted "next Thursday" implied that Monty was appearing on tonight's 'Question Time' (February 5th), but I see from my Radio Times that in fact Monty is scheduled to appear on next week's programme - Thursday February 12th.
I'm sorry it's not tonight because I really am looking forward to seeing him once more. Welcome back to the airwaves, Monty old friend.

Oops, sorry everyone, I see that this mix-up over dates has already been spotted. Pardon me while I go and stick my head in the compost heap.

I'd rather hear Monty on 'Gardeners' Question Time' than on 'Question Time' (i.e. I'd rather hear him talking about vegetables than sharing a platform with vegetables).]
A turnip and a couple of wet lettuces comes to mind.

I am watching Question Time ... ZZZZZZzzzzzzz everybody will want to spread sunshine, try and prove they are worth massive expense accounts and not say anything contraversial.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
....apart from Monty and to some extent the beguiling and clever Salma, who told it exactly how it is. How badly we need confident liberals to hold (insert adjective of choice) like Kelvin Mackenzie at bay.
Politicians have to do what politicians have to do, but Kelvin was poisonous and inflammatory and made my blood boil.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
I thought the entire programme was quite entertaining and informative, and it was good to see and hear Monty looking so well. The MP looked a bit flumoxed at times, nor did I disagree much with what Kelvin McKenzie said although 'Columnist for The Sun' says a lot. Monty did very well and I agreed with much of what he said, until his very last line about "legalising all drugs". With that I profoundly disagree.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
Somebody was saying earlier about GQT. Has Monty ever been on it? I would have thought he would be rather good, perhaps on when Bob Flowerdew is away, although maybe he is trying to move away from the gardening stuff? There are probably only so many time you want to talk about white onion rot or whatever.
I thought he was fine on Question Time, I particularly liked the way he said people need to make a distinction between weather and climate change. Good point that, people are always doing the thing where they turn around and say its snowing so we don't have climate change etc .
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
It was nice to see Monty Don on TV again. I agree with Paul N. I thought Monty had good answers/opinions to most questions except for the last one about 'legalising all drugs' which I don't agree with.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
I also like to add that most of Monty’s audiences/fans are likely to be in their thirties or over. Therefore his opinion on legalising drags are not likely to have any influence on them.
We so miss you Monty.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
The legalise all drugs theory is one shared by some police and probation officers that I have spoken to -the wider issue is not just which drugs are most harmful to the user, but the surrounding crime, violence, coercion, gang activity etc engendered by the fact that they are illegal and lucrative.
Not the right place to discuss this I know, but i just wanted to point out that Monty's comment is not as contraversial as it might seem
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
It is a very tricky issue. Legalising it brings it all within controls like Trading Standards, age limits etc and would surely cut down the criminality.
On the other hand alcohol is a legal, partially controlled drug and our health service is overrun with alcohol related problems.
Humans may be hard-wired to escape the knowledge that our lives are finite, if we can, so perhaps drug use is a normal human behaviou, whether it's alcohol, anti-depressants, tobacco or something stronger. I only know one or two people who never consume any of the above.

I don't think Monty actually said legalise all drugs he just said there was a case for it! I think there is a case for legalisation or if not legalisation then at least decriminalisation

As a retired Police Officer and a parent of a beautiful 24yr old daughter who four years ago lost her life through drugs, perhaps I don't need to emphasise my feelings on the subject.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
Sorry for your loss, Paul. One of the saddest and hardest things to ask someone to bear, I think, for a parent to lose a child.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
Nothing I can say, Paul, other than to offer my heartfelt sympathy.
I have two daughters, aged 19 and 21 and can only imagine what you've been through.
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
Paul that is a terrible punishment. Especially for a police family...
I do however agree with Monty. Drug use/addiction is a medical/mental health issue and should be dealt with by health care professionals. These professionals can't do this effectively whilst drug addiction/use is a criminal activity. Going to a family GP is usually the last resort for an addict or drug user (indeed, as an effect of the drugs, they're in total denial they have a serious and dangerous medical condition) and usually only happens when they are found with an OD, by which time it is too late.
If you think of the world of drugs as being a sea, the more often you swim in that sea, the more likely you are to either drown or meet a shark. Legalising drugs would deprive those sharks of their prey, as the potential user would be on dry land and able to be helped. Not only that, but legal drugs would remove all of the 'glamour' and lure of rebellion, which at a certain stage in many young lives is the attraction, they soon learn that the reality's the complete opposite, but by then they're far from dry land.
Of course, there probably still would be addicts, but they would be pitied and certainly not be an 'edgy life-style' option. I hope I haven't angered you with my views, but with the exponential increase in drug use over the past 50 years, I think it's time to try a different tack.

Sorry for bringing back pain, Paul.
Sincerely.
when I was dabbling in sort drugs at 17 I was at a house where someone collapsed, and most of us just ran away because we were so scared of the criminal implications of being there.
I'm in my fifties now and still feel guilty.
It's so complicated.
Originally on this thread, i just meant that monty's remark wasn't totally out of order - it's a debate society has to have to see whether we can help stop the pain - somehow

Oh, before we get closed down, because of course we're in the wrong place for this discussion, but it is important,
At the moment we have a Community payback scheme going on, where instead of fines or detention people work on community problems like gardening for older folk etc - some work is being done in my street at the moment, and I'm feeling quite positive about it - I'm hoping the people are also learning some basics of gardening and seeing a job well done and feeling pride in it.
When I mentioned in passing what a good job they were doing the smiles were so wide and genuine that I thought it must be doing something for a feeling of self -worth

Paul - I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter and want to add my support for your view. My father is a retired police Chief Superintendent. I spent my formative years only too aware of the problems and misery drugs brought to people as my father dealt daily with the fallout of drug dependence. Regrettably some of my peers at school got into a mess. It was instilled into me from an early age to say no and I can't understand how making drugs more acceptable and available will reduce the uptake. As a society we would be giving drugs the green light and saying its OK. My father is and always has been against legalisation, as indeed am I.

I wouldn't mind carrying on the discussion, but some are getting fed up etc.
Shall we agree to leave it here, and move to another board - don't know where though?
Link to this forum: Monty Don on next week's 'Question Time'
I ran a drug and alcohol treatment agency on the East Coast, and set up another inside a max. security prison too. I'm retired now. I don't think money has been well spent trying to treat consumers who mostly don;t want to be treated. I don't think treatments are very successful either as they stand, and there is a whole industry trying to deal with the consumer end of the business, with another whole industry trying ineffectively to control the supply side. The politics of it all is a minefield. I'd not touch any of it, except perhaps if cannabis was legalised, I'd grow some on my allotment to serve people suffering from arthritis. It says on my packet of Hemp seed from the health food shop that 'you may not grow plants from this seed', (but I know someone who could, and did). It's a foolish world. I bet a few of Monty's addicts went on his gardening training to get the horticultural skills for GYO.
